Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed Stonking Stingray, was released on 15 October 2026. Canonical is distributing it as an interim release, but its most notable launch detail is unusual: Ubuntu shipped while Linux 7.3 was still in release-candidate development. Canonical says installed systems will move to the completed kernel when upstream 7.3 is available.

What Ubuntu 26.10 is

Stonking Stingray is the October 2026 Ubuntu release between the project’s long-term-support editions. Canonical announced the final release on 15 October and made installation media available through its download portal at ubuntu.com/download. It is current software, but it follows Ubuntu’s interim-release model rather than the conservative LTS deployment path.

The schedule shows how tightly the release was timed: Feature Freeze was 20 August, Kernel Feature Freeze 17 September, Beta and Hardware Enablement Freeze 21 September, Beta 24 September, Kernel Freeze 1 October, Final Freeze and the release candidate 8 October, and final release 15 October 2026.

Why Ubuntu shipped with a pre-release kernel

Canonical’s kernel team originally targeted Linux 7.2. On 1 September 2026, it changed the target to Linux 7.3 as upstream development progressed and said the new kernel would be placed in Ubuntu’s -proposed pocket for early testing.

  • BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.

By launch, upstream Linux 7.3 had reached release candidate 7 rather than its final release. Ubuntu therefore aligned its image and package set with the release candidate instead of delaying Stonking Stingray. Launch reporting said machines would receive the completed 7.3 as soon as it became available. The practical implication is that a fresh installation may initially report a release-candidate kernel and then receive a normal update that replaces it with final 7.3.

What changes in Stonking Stingray

Post-quantum package-signature verification

Ubuntu replaces GnuPG in the APT repository-signature path with Sequoia PGP. Canonical describes the implementation as post-quantum ready, positioning package verification for cryptographic standards intended to withstand future quantum attacks.

Quantum-safe token support

The release adds quantum-safe token support through openCryptoki, including ML-DSA and ML-KEM integration across Soft, EP11 and CCA token types. This is infrastructure aimed at enterprise and security-sensitive deployments rather than a visible desktop switch.

Rust-based core utilities completed

Ubuntu completes its rollout of Rust-based uutils coreutils. The project provides replacements for core command-line utilities while retaining the familiar commands and interfaces administrators use in scripts and terminals.

Microsoft Entra ID authentication

Stonking Stingray strengthens integration with Microsoft Entra ID, giving organizations using Microsoft’s cloud identity service a more direct authentication option on Ubuntu systems.

New hardware enablement

Kernel 7.3 is intended to support newer platforms, including Intel Xe3P (Nova Lake), AMD Zen 6 and NVIDIA 615 hardware. Canonical also highlights out-of-the-box Lustre support for parallel data-transfer workloads, which matters most to high-performance-computing and large-scale storage users.

Myna speech-to-text is only a technology preview

Myna is included as an experimental speech-to-text feature, not as a finished productivity tool. Independent launch testing found that it failed on an older ThinkPad. On a newer Dell XPS 9370, it worked after the tester switched to a non-GPU language model, but recognition was described as very slow.

Should you upgrade from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS?

Priority Better fit Reason
Newest processor and graphics support Ubuntu 26.10 Linux 7.3 targets Intel Xe3P (Nova Lake), AMD Zen 6 and NVIDIA 615 hardware.
Security and identity integration Ubuntu 26.10 It introduces Sequoia PGP for APT signatures, openCryptoki post-quantum algorithms and stronger Microsoft Entra ID integration.
Predictable production systems Stay on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Stonking Stingray is an interim release and launched with a pre-release kernel.
Testing upcoming Ubuntu changes Ubuntu 26.10 The interim cycle exposes new components and hardware support earlier, with a greater obligation to test updates and recover from regressions.

For a workstation or server that must remain uneventful, keep the LTS installation until your applications, drivers and management tools are certified for Stonking Stingray. For newer hardware that the current LTS kernel does not support well, or for users who deliberately track Ubuntu’s interim releases, 26.10 offers the newer enablement sooner.

Is Stonking Stingray stable enough for daily use?

It is a final Ubuntu release, but that does not make it equivalent to an LTS deployment choice. The pre-release kernel at launch adds a moving part, and the Kubuntu team’s beta notice explicitly warned: “This is a pre-release. It is intended for testing, not production use.” That warning applied to the beta, not the final image, but it captures the risk profile of an interim cycle.

Before upgrading a daily-use machine, make a tested backup, confirm that proprietary drivers and peripherals support the new kernel, and verify that your recovery media can restore the previous system. Install first on a spare machine or a separate disk if kernel or graphics compatibility is critical. After installation, apply updates promptly so the system can receive the final Linux 7.3 package when Canonical publishes it.

What to watch after installation

  • Check the running kernel with uname -r and confirm that updates replace the release-candidate build with final 7.3 when available.
  • Test suspend, docking, Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration and external displays, especially on newly supported Intel, AMD or NVIDIA hardware.
  • For Myna, try both GPU and non-GPU language-model options and judge responsiveness on your own hardware.
  • Review APT, identity and token configurations in managed environments before broad deployment.
