For Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS, plan on a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free storage for a comfortable experience. Those figures describe the current Desktop release, not a guarantee that every laptop’s Wi-Fi, graphics, sleep, touchpad or other hardware will work. Check the exact model in Ubuntu’s certified-hardware catalog, then boot a live USB and test the features you depend on before changing the disk.
Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop requirements at a glance
Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS release notes describe the following as requirements for a comfortable Desktop installation. They are release-specific guidance rather than a promise that a computer below the figures cannot boot.

| Component | Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 guidance | What to verify in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 2 GHz dual-core processor or better | The CPU must use an architecture for which you have an Ubuntu image. A processor rating alone does not certify the motherboard, graphics, storage or peripherals. |
| System memory | 6 GB RAM | Leave additional headroom for browser tabs, virtual machines, development tools and large applications. |
| Free storage | 25 GB | This is free space, not the drive’s advertised capacity. Reserve more for updates, personal files, swap and applications. |
| Installation media | A USB port or DVD drive | Most current installations use a bootable USB drive. The drive used to create the installer is erased. |
| Internet connection | Helpful, but not required for the initial installation according to the release notes | An internet connection is still important for updates, drivers, language packs and additional software after setup. |
Lower-specification hardware may still start the installer, but the standard Desktop session can feel slow when memory is tight or the system is using an older mechanical disk. Ubuntu’s release guidance points users with weaker hardware toward an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu rather than treating the Desktop figures as a universal boot barrier.

Desktop and Server are different targets
The figures above apply to Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS. Ubuntu Server has workload-dependent requirements: a small file server, a database host and a virtualization machine can need very different amounts of memory, storage performance and network capacity. Do not use the Desktop checklist as a server specification.

Use requirements for the image you will install
The official Desktop download page lists Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS as the current point release and offers Intel/AMD 64-bit and ARM 64-bit Desktop images (information listed on 13 October 2026). Requirements and image availability can change between releases, so confirm the release name shown on the download page before preparing media.
A point release does not turn a generic image into a driver package for every computer. It is still necessary to match the image to the target architecture and check the particular hardware configuration.
Match your computer’s architecture to the image
Architecture determines whether an installer can run at all. It is separate from speed, brand and the amount of RAM installed.
| Target hardware | Image or support detail | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Intel or AMD 64-bit PCs | Use the standard Intel/AMD 64-bit Desktop image. | The normal x86-64 image preserves a broad CPU baseline. Ubuntu also describes an optional amd64v3 optimized variant for newer CPUs; that optimization is not the minimum Desktop requirement. |
| 64-bit ARM systems | Use the ARM 64-bit image when your board or computer is supported. | ARM devices vary substantially in firmware, graphics, storage and peripherals. A generic ARM image is not a guarantee for every board. |
| Raspberry Pi and other boards | The release image directory includes preinstalled Raspberry Pi images and additional server images. | Select the image intended for the exact board and use its documented boot and storage method. |
| RISC-V systems | Ubuntu 26.04 images are described as RVA23 and above; the release summary says 26.04 requires RVA23S64. | Ubuntu 24.04 continues to support earlier RVA20 processor cores. This restriction is specific to the RISC-V images, not ordinary Intel/AMD PCs. |
Ubuntu’s architecture guidance makes the broader point that a CPU is only one part of the hardware stack. Firmware, chipset, storage controller, graphics, networking and input devices determine whether the complete computer is usable.

Check the exact model in Ubuntu Certified hardware
Search Ubuntu’s certified-hardware catalog using the computer’s precise model and configuration, not just a product-family name. A single laptop family may ship with different Wi-Fi cards, display panels, storage controllers or graphics options. The catalog entry should identify the Ubuntu release for which that configuration was certified.
- Treat a matching listing as evidence for the listed configuration and release, not blanket certification for every machine sold under the same name.
- If the catalog lists a different Ubuntu release, verify whether the newer release has a separate entry.
- Pay particular attention to wireless, graphics, suspend/resume, fingerprint readers, touchscreens, docking stations and unusual storage controllers if those features matter to you.
The catalog is dynamic. An unlisted computer is not automatically incompatible; it simply lacks that particular certification evidence. For an unlisted system, the live-session test is the next practical check.
Try Ubuntu from a live USB before installing
A live session loads Ubuntu without committing changes to the internal drive. It is the safest way to discover obvious hardware problems before repartitioning or replacing an existing system. It cannot prove that every future kernel update or heavy workload will behave identically, but it can expose many compatibility issues.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Back up the USB drive. Use a flash drive of 8 GB or larger. Writing the Ubuntu image erases that drive, so copy off anything you need first.
- Create the installer with Ubuntu’s current Desktop image and a reliable image-writing utility. Verify that the utility targets the USB drive, not an internal disk.
- Boot from USB. Open the computer’s boot menu or firmware settings, select the USB device and choose the option to try Ubuntu rather than install it.
- Test networking. Connect to Wi-Fi, check wired Ethernet if relevant, and confirm that the adapter remains connected after moving around or waking the display.
- Test graphics and displays. Check the built-in panel, brightness controls, hardware acceleration, video playback and every external monitor or dock you plan to use.
- Test input and audio. Use the keyboard, touchpad, touchscreen, webcam, microphone, speakers, headphone jack, Bluetooth accessories and any special function keys.
- Test power behavior. Suspend and resume several times, close and reopen the lid on a laptop, and check whether Wi-Fi, audio and the display return correctly.
- Test your critical workload. Open the applications, development tools, printers, scanners or specialized devices that determine whether the computer is useful to you.
- Record problems before installing. Note the exact symptom and hardware component. Search using the model, Ubuntu release and symptom if you need a model-specific fix.
Performance in a live session can be slower because the system is reading from USB and may have limited writable space. Judge functionality first; do not treat live-session speed as a precise measure of installed performance.

Storage mode: understand Intel RST before changing it
Some Windows PCs use Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST). Ubuntu’s installation tutorial states that it does not support installing while the disk is configured in that RST mode. The installer may therefore stop and ask you to change the storage configuration.
Why this requires care
Changing RST to AHCI affects how Windows accesses the disk. A casual firmware switch can make Windows fail to boot or, in a worst case, put data at risk. The correct sequence depends on the computer and Windows configuration.
What to do when RST is reported
- Stop the installation and back up important files.
- Read the official instructions for your exact computer model and Windows version.
- Follow the model-specific process for moving Windows to AHCI before changing the firmware setting.
- Only then change the storage mode in firmware and retry the Ubuntu installer.
Do not change storage settings merely because AHCI is common on other machines. If the installer does not report RST, this particular workaround is not relevant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHardware checks that matter after the basic requirements
Wireless and wired networking
Confirm that the adapter appears, connects to your network, survives suspend/resume and can use the security mode on your router. A computer can meet every CPU and RAM figure while still being impractical if its only network adapter is unsupported.

Graphics and external monitors
Check the native resolution, brightness control, video playback, hardware acceleration and the ports or dock you use. Hybrid graphics and unusual external-display arrangements deserve extra testing because the internal panel may work while a second display does not.
Audio, camera and input devices
Play sound through speakers and headphones, record from the microphone, open the webcam and test the keyboard, touchpad, touchscreen and function keys. Bluetooth peripherals should be paired and used, not merely detected.
Sleep, power and lid behavior
Suspending successfully once is not enough for a laptop you carry daily. Test several sleep and wake cycles, battery charging, lid close/open behavior and reconnection of Wi-Fi and external displays.
Storage and firmware
Confirm that the installer sees the intended drive and that the machine’s firmware can boot the selected image. Leave room beyond the 25 GB Desktop figure for updates, personal data and applications; a nearly full system is difficult to maintain even when installation succeeds.

Apple Silicon Macs need a separate path
Ubuntu’s Desktop documentation directs users with M1-and-later Macs to Ubuntu Asahi, a community project that Canonical does not support. Compatibility is machine-specific and may be limited. Before proceeding, check the current Asahi documentation for the exact Mac model and the release it supports. Do not assume that an ordinary Intel/AMD Ubuntu Desktop USB will install on Apple Silicon.
How to compare two computers for Ubuntu
If you are choosing between existing machines, compare the complete platform rather than a processor benchmark.
| Decision point | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Certification | Is the exact model and configuration listed for the intended Ubuntu release? | This is stronger evidence than a family name or a CPU specification. |
| Architecture | Is there an official image for the machine’s CPU architecture? | An unmatched image cannot provide a normal installation path. |
| Memory and storage | Does it meet 6 GB RAM and 25 GB free space, with room for your workload? | The stated figures target comfortable Desktop use, not your future data or applications. |
| Required components | Do Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, input, sleep and external displays work in a live session? | These are common failure points that CPU specifications do not reveal. |
| Storage configuration | Does the firmware use Intel RST? | RST can block installation until Windows and firmware are reconfigured safely. |
| Ease of testing | Can you boot a USB and return to the existing operating system? | A reversible test reduces the risk of committing to an unsupported setup. |
A slightly slower certified computer with working suspend and networking is often a better Ubuntu machine than a faster, unlisted model with one unusable device.
Installation preparation checklist
- Write down the exact Ubuntu release and edition: Desktop 26.04 LTS, Server, or another supported image.
- Identify the target architecture before downloading.
- Back up the existing operating system and personal data.
- Check Ubuntu Certified hardware for the exact model and configuration.
- Prepare an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive and accept that creating the installer erases it.
- Run the live-session tests for every component and workflow you depend on.
- Confirm at least 25 GB of free storage, plus working space for updates and files.
- If Intel RST appears, stop and follow instructions for the specific computer before changing storage mode.
- On Apple Silicon, verify current Ubuntu Asahi support rather than using the standard PC image.
- Keep a network connection available for updates and additional software, even though it is not required for the initial installation.
What a successful compatibility check can—and cannot—tell you
If the exact model is certified, the image matches the architecture and the live USB handles your required devices, you have strong practical evidence for installing Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop. That evidence still does not guarantee every peripheral, firmware revision, third-party driver or future update. Conversely, an unlisted computer that passes your live tests may work well, but you should keep a recovery plan and document the working kernel and settings.
The most reliable decision combines the release-specific requirements, architecture matching, exact-model certification and hands-on live testing. No single CPU number or product-family label can replace those checks.
