There is no verified, vendor-documented “fix” for running ArcGIS Maps SDK for Qt on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS under Wayland. Esri’s published 200.8 system requirements list Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS, and not 26.04. Ubuntu 26.04’s desktop session is Wayland-only. The distribution does ship current Qt 6 Wayland packages. Those three facts leave you in unsupported territory, so the useful approach is a structured diagnosis rather than a list of environment-variable folklore.
What is established, and what is not
| Question | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Is the Ubuntu 26.04 desktop Wayland-only? | Yes. Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS release notes say the Ubuntu Desktop session runs only on Wayland, and X.org applications can run through XWayland. The release date is 23 April 2026, with support through April 2031 (Canonical / Ubuntu). |
| Does Ubuntu 26.04 package Qt 6 Wayland? | Yes. The Resolute package indexes list qt6-wayland 6.10.2-4 and libqt6waylandclient6 6.10.2+dfsg-7 (Ubuntu Packages, current listing). This shows the components exist, not that Esri supports them. |
| Does Qt itself support Wayland on Ubuntu? | Qt’s Wayland requirements page says Ubuntu releases later than 14.04 contain the needed dependencies. That concerns Qt, not Esri’s SDK. |
| Is Ubuntu 26.04 in Esri’s matrix? | Not in the 200.8 table, which names Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and 24.04 LTS only. |
| Is ArcGIS Maps SDK for Qt 300.x supported on 26.04 or on native Wayland? | Not established by the sources available. Check the system requirements for your exact 300.x release. |
| Is there a documented Wayland-specific repair? | No. Esri’s Linux setup material covers Qt Framework for Linux, Qt Creator, kit and CMake configuration, and SDK installation, with no Wayland-specific fix. |
Esri also states that the 200.x line is focused on bug fixes and security updates and points users to 300.x. Its 200.8 table should therefore not be read as describing 300.x requirements.

What Esri’s 200.8 requirements tell you
Even though 26.04 is absent, the 200.8 Linux table is useful as a checklist of things that commonly break:
- Qt version and tooling: Qt Framework for Linux 6.8.2 or later and Qt Creator 15.0 or later.
- CPU: x86-family only.
- Graphics: hardware graphics are required. OpenGL 2.1 is listed for 2D map views and 3.2 for 3D scene views. Mesa software rendering is explicitly unsupported.
- OS integrity: the OS binary must not be modified.
The graphics rows matter most on Wayland, because a misconfigured driver can silently fall back to software rendering (for example Mesa’s llvmpipe), which Esri excludes.

A diagnostic path
The steps below are general Qt and Linux diagnostics. They help locate a fault; none is an Esri-endorsed fix.
1. Pin down the exact stack
Record the SDK release (for example 200.8 or a specific 300.x), the Qt version and compiler kit in Qt Creator, the Ubuntu release, the GPU and driver, and whether the problem appears at build time, at startup, during rendering, or in window and input behaviour. Different symptoms point to different layers, and a vendor ticket without this information will stall.

- Compatibility: Compatible with any brand's PC, works with both legacy BIOS and UEFI booting mode, except for Apple computers, Chromebooks and ARM-based devices.
- Popularity:Most popular linux distributions and all come with common software includes office software, web browser, image editing, multimedia, and email except Lubuntu which is desgined to targted for very old PC.
- Support: Print user guide and support available. please contact us for help if you have an issue.
- Live USB or install: You can either try on USB or install on hard drive.
2. Check the vendor’s current statement
Open the system requirements for your exact SDK release and look for Ubuntu 26.04 and for any mention of Wayland. If the release does not list 26.04, you are running an unsupported combination, which affects what support you can expect, not whether it can work.

3. Find out whether the app is native Wayland or XWayland
Qt chooses a platform plugin at launch. Running with plugin debugging shows which one loads and why others fail:

- UBUNTU 24.04.3 LTS MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04.3 LTS for compatible x86-64 PCs.
- LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Ubuntu live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
- PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
- BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
- BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
QT_DEBUG_PLUGINS=1 ./yourappprints plugin search and load results.QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland ./yourappforces the native Wayland plugin.QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb ./yourappforces the X11 plugin, which runs through XWayland on 26.04. Qt 6 xcb setups often need thelibxcb-cursor0package; a missing library shows up in the plugin debug output.
If behaviour differs between the two, you have localised the problem to the display backend. Treat that as a diagnostic result. Neither backend is documented by Esri as the supported choice, and XWayland compatibility does not by itself guarantee that the SDK renders correctly.
4. Verify hardware rendering
Install the diagnostic tools with sudo apt install mesa-utils, then run glxinfo -B (through XWayland) or eglinfo. Check the renderer string and the OpenGL version. If it names llvmpipe or another software renderer, or reports less than OpenGL 3.2 where you need 3D scene views, fix the driver path first, because that alone puts you outside Esri’s stated requirements.

5. Separate Qt problems from SDK problems
Build a minimal Qt Quick application with the same kit. If it fails to open a window or render under Wayland, the issue lies in Qt, the compositor, or the driver, and you can report it to Qt or Ubuntu. If it works and only the ArcGIS map or scene view fails, the problem is likely at the SDK-graphics boundary, which belongs in an Esri support case with your log output.
6. Use a supported baseline for comparison
Reproducing on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the newest Ubuntu release in the 200.8 table, with Qt 6.8.2 or later, gives you a reference point. Treat it as a diagnostic comparison only. A pass there suggests the difference lies in the newer OS stack, but it does not identify which component is responsible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Things to avoid
- Modifying system binaries or libraries to force a match. Esri’s table states the OS binary must not be modified.
- Presenting a plugin swap or environment variable as a permanent fix without checking that rendering is hardware accelerated and stable across sessions.
- Assuming Qt 6.10.2 is acceptable because it is newer than 6.8.2. The 200.8 requirement is “6.8.2 or later”, but the SDK release you use may name specific Qt versions or kits.
Where the evidence stops
No source reviewed confirms ArcGIS Maps SDK for Qt 300.x on Ubuntu 26.04, confirms native Wayland deployment, or documents a repair for a specific failure. Anything that works for you in testing is a local result on your hardware and driver. If your project needs certainty, ask Esri support for a written statement covering your SDK release and Ubuntu 26.04.
