Steam and Ubisoft Connect are separate PC storefronts and account ecosystems. A game bought on Steam is not automatically a Steam-and-Ubisoft transferable license, and a game bought through Ubisoft Connect is not a Steam entitlement unless the specific listing says so. For any Ubisoft title, check the current store page for the edition, required launcher or services, DLC treatment and account-linking rules before paying.
Choose Steam when you want that purchase organized in your Steam library and the title’s listing supports the launcher arrangement you accept. Choose Ubisoft Connect when you want the Ubisoft account, rewards and Ubisoft-managed services attached directly to the purchase. Ubisoft+ is a different choice again: it is subscription access to a changing catalog, not ownership.

Steam and Ubisoft Connect are different kinds of ecosystems
Steam is a third-party PC game storefront and library. Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s own PC client and account-services hub, combining game access with rewards and supported cross-platform features. They can both appear in the launch path for a Ubisoft game, but they do not become one shared licensing system.

In a 2020 Ubisoft News interview, Connect Creative Director Charles Huteau described it as “a new merge between Uplay, our current PC client, and the Ubisoft Club rewards system.” That statement explains the service’s original scope; it should not be read as a promise that every current Ubisoft game has identical launcher, save or cross-play behavior.

- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
The practical dividing line is the purchase entitlement. The store account that completes the transaction normally owns that store’s edition. A Steam purchase should not be described as a Ubisoft Connect license, and a Connect purchase should not be described as a Steam license, unless the individual seller or game page explicitly says otherwise.
Quick comparison: which service fits which job?
| Decision point | Steam | Ubisoft Connect |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Third-party PC storefront and library | Ubisoft PC client, account-services hub and rewards ecosystem |
| Who holds the store entitlement? | The Steam account used for the purchase, subject to the title’s terms | The Ubisoft account used for the purchase, subject to the title’s terms |
| Launcher requirement | Varies by Ubisoft title; read the current listing and support notes | Varies by title and may involve Connect or a newer services implementation |
| Cross-progression | Not a Steam-wide feature; depends on the game and linked accounts | Available only when the game supports it and the relevant accounts are linked |
| Achievements and trophies | Follow the game’s platform rules | Do not assume they transfer; Rainbow Six Siege keeps them platform-specific |
| DLC and edition checking | Confirm the exact Steam edition and add-ons on its listing | Use the game’s account entry and Properties page to inspect the edition and owned add-ons where supported |
| Subscription option | Not established by the evidence for this comparison | Ubisoft+ offers temporary access to a limited, changeable catalog |
Where your game is actually purchased matters
A Steam purchase
When the checkout occurs on Steam, the store entitlement is associated with the Steam account and the edition selected there. That does not establish a universal right to download the same game from Ubisoft Connect as a separately owned Connect purchase. A Ubisoft account may still be required for Ubisoft services, but account linking is not the same thing as transferring the store license.
A Ubisoft Connect purchase
A purchase made through Ubisoft Connect is managed in the Ubisoft account’s library. It should not be treated as a Steam purchase merely because the game can also be sold on Steam. If you later install Steam, the Connect entitlement does not automatically appear as a Steam-owned game.

Store names such as Standard, Deluxe or Gold are not enough to establish identical contents across storefronts. Compare the exact edition, included DLC, language options and any account or launcher requirement on the page where you intend to buy. A promotion on one platform does not set the rules for another.
Do you need Ubisoft Connect when buying a Ubisoft game on Steam?
There is no single answer for every title. The requirement is determined by the current game listing and Ubisoft’s support information for that game. Some Steam releases may require the full Ubisoft Connect PC client or a Ubisoft account; others may use a different integration.

A report dated September 10, 2026 described Ubisoft testing a “Ubisoft Connect Services” tool for Steam, beginning with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. According to that report, the test was intended to preserve features such as cross-progression, cross-play, player safety, challenges and rewards without requiring the full Ubisoft Connect PC launcher to be installed or launched. The same report described rollout to additional Steam games as progressive and future-facing.
That is a limited test report, not a universal compatibility matrix. It does not mean every Ubisoft game on Steam has stopped requiring Connect. Before buying or installing, read the current Steam listing’s system and third-party-account notes, then check the game’s Ubisoft support page if the wording is unclear.
How to choose a store before you buy
- Start with the exact game and edition. Do not decide from the publisher name alone. Open the listing for the base game, bundle or edition you actually want.
- Record the owning account. Note whether checkout is taking place on Steam or Ubisoft Connect. That account is the starting point for future downloads, refunds and entitlement checks.
- Read launcher and account requirements. Look for a required Steam client, Ubisoft Connect PC client, Ubisoft account or a title-specific services tool.
- Check DLC and bonuses. Verify which expansion packs, cosmetic items and early-access benefits are included in that edition. Do not infer contents from another store’s bundle name.
- Decide where you want the shortcut and purchase history. If a single Steam library is your priority, buy there only after confirming the title’s Ubisoft requirements. If direct Ubisoft rewards and account services matter more, Connect may be the better home.
- Confirm regional and platform terms. Availability, plans and benefits can differ by country, platform, purchase channel and age. This is particularly important for Ubisoft+.
What account linking does—and does not do
Ubisoft’s general account-linking guidance says linking an account enables available cross-play and cross-progression features. “Available” is the crucial limitation: the individual game must implement the feature, and you must link the relevant platform and Ubisoft accounts.
Linking can allow a game service to recognize the same Ubisoft identity across platforms. It does not merge two store purchases into one entitlement, and it does not guarantee that every save category, ranked statistic, inventory item or achievement will synchronize.
Cross-progression is game-specific, not a universal Ubisoft setting
Rainbow Six Siege illustrates the boundaries
Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six Siege documentation says cross-progression data is saved to the Ubisoft account rather than the platform account. That does not mean every data type is shared identically. Ubisoft’s synchronization table keeps achievements and trophies specific to each platform, while inventory, challenges and progression follow their own rules. Some ranked information also remains separated between PC and consoles.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Siege is a concrete example, not a template for every Ubisoft release. A different title may synchronize more data, less data or none at all. Check the game-specific support page before assuming that a PC save, achievement list or competitive history will follow you.

Separate the four questions you are really asking
- Will I own the game? Check the store entitlement and edition.
- Can I launch it? Check the required client, account and services implementation.
- Will my progress follow me? Check the title’s cross-progression rules and linked account.
- Will my achievements follow me? Check the platform-specific achievement policy; progress transfer does not guarantee achievement transfer.
Checking editions and DLC in Ubisoft Connect
For a specific Xbox-to-PC offer announced in July 2026, Xbox explained that Ubisoft Connect PC displays the edition associated with the account in its library. The game’s Properties page can break down owned DLC and add-ons. That is a useful account-checking pattern for that offer and listed titles, but it does not establish how Steam purchases behave.
- Open the Ubisoft Connect PC library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties page.
- Review the displayed edition and the listed DLC or add-ons.
- Compare that list with the store description before purchasing an upgrade or duplicate bundle.
If an item is missing, first verify that you are signed into the Ubisoft account that made the purchase or received the promotion. Then compare the account’s edition record with the exact offer’s eligibility; do not assume another storefront’s entitlement has been imported.
Ubisoft+ is access, not ownership
Ubisoft+ is a subscription alternative to buying a particular game. Ubisoft’s US subscription terms describe access to a limited PC-game library for as long as each title remains available in the service. Depending on the plan, platform, purchase channel and country, benefits may include early access, rewards, discounts or access through third-party services.
The terms also warn that services and benefits can vary by plan, platform, purchase channel, country and age, and that catalog content can change. A subscription therefore answers a different question from “Where should I buy this game permanently?”

What happens when you cancel?
After cancellation, access to Ubisoft+ games and benefits ends when the current subscription period expires, unless you separately bought the game and still have that purchase in your account. Subscription access should not be described as ownership, and a title leaving the catalog can end access even if your subscription itself has not been canceled.
When a subscription makes sense
- You want to sample several eligible games rather than permanently buy one title.
- You value plan-specific early access, rewards or discounts and have confirmed they apply in your territory.
- You accept that catalog membership and benefits can change.
When buying is safer
- You want continuing access to one specific game after a subscription ends.
- You are deciding between editions with permanent DLC ownership.
- You need a predictable entitlement for a long-term save or collection.
Common scenarios and the least-surprising choice
| Your priority | What to verify | Likely fit |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the purchase in one Steam library | Whether the title requires Connect and whether that extra account step is acceptable | Steam, if the listing’s requirements meet your expectations |
| Use Ubisoft rewards and account services directly | Connect account requirements, edition contents and regional terms | Ubisoft Connect |
| Play on multiple platforms | Game-specific cross-play and cross-progression support, plus account linking | Either store; the game’s support rules decide |
| Move an existing Connect purchase to Steam | Explicit transfer language from the seller or game page | Assume no transfer unless the title explicitly provides one |
| Try a rotating catalog | Current Ubisoft+ plan, catalog availability and cancellation terms | Ubisoft+ |
| Keep a game after a subscription ends | Whether you separately purchased it and which account owns that purchase | A standalone purchase |
Can you move a Ubisoft Connect game to Steam?
There is no universal Ubisoft-to-Steam or Steam-to-Ubisoft transfer entitlement established for Ubisoft games. Installing Steam, linking a Ubisoft account or adding a non-Steam shortcut does not by itself convert the underlying license.
If a particular publisher promotion or game page explicitly grants another storefront entitlement, follow that title’s instructions. Without that statement, plan on using the store where you bought the game and keep the associated account secure.
Troubleshooting the problems people commonly call “Steam versus Connect”
The game appears in one library but not the other
Check which account completed the purchase and which edition was bought. A Connect-owned title is not expected to appear as a Steam-owned license, and a Steam-owned title is not automatically a Connect purchase. If the game page promised a linked entitlement, use the account-linking instructions for that specific title.
The launcher requirement is unclear
Read the current store listing rather than relying on an older installation guide. Launcher arrangements are changing, and the September 2026 services test covered a limited title and rollout. If the listing and support page disagree, treat the title-specific support guidance as the safer reference before installing.

DLC or an edition is missing
Open the owning account’s library entry and the game’s Properties page where available. Compare the displayed add-ons with the edition purchased. Also check that you are using the account that received the purchase or promotion and that the offer covered your territory and platform.
Progress transferred but achievements did not
That can be expected. Cross-progression and achievement synchronization are separate data categories. Siege’s documentation explicitly keeps achievements and trophies platform-specific, so do not treat an unsynchronized achievement list as proof that the save transfer failed.
You canceled Ubisoft+ and can no longer launch a game
Access ends at the close of the current subscription period unless you separately purchased the game. Check your Ubisoft account for a standalone entitlement before buying it again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical pre-purchase checklist
- Exact title, edition and region confirmed.
- Store account that will own the purchase identified.
- Launcher, Ubisoft-account and third-party-service requirements read.
- DLC, add-ons, bonuses and early-access terms compared.
- Cross-play and cross-progression checked on the game’s own support page.
- Achievement and trophy behavior checked separately from save synchronization.
- Subscription catalog and cancellation implications understood if considering Ubisoft+.
- No assumption made that a Steam and Connect purchase are interchangeable.
Bottom-line decision
Buy on Steam when the specific listing provides the launcher arrangement you want and keeping the entitlement in Steam is your main priority. Buy on Ubisoft Connect when direct Ubisoft account services, rewards and library management are more important. Choose Ubisoft+ only for temporary access to its current catalog and benefits. In every case, the individual game page—not the storefront name alone—determines launcher requirements, DLC contents and cross-platform behavior.
