Nintendo has made Rayman 2: The Great Escape easy to play on modern hardware again, while Ubisoft still has no announced new numbered Rayman adventure. The Nintendo 64 platformer joined Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack catalog on December 17, 2025—a useful revival that also underlines how little Ubisoft has done with one of its best-known characters.
What Nintendo released
The game added to the service is the Nintendo 64 version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape, a 3D platformer originally built around exploration, environmental puzzles, combat and movement challenges. Nintendo made it available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack catalog on December 17, 2025.

ComicBook.com’s 2025 report cites a 90 Metacritic score for Rayman 2 and recommends it to 3D-platforming fans. That score belongs to the game’s critical reception, not to the Switch emulation itself. The same report notes that newcomers should expect dated visuals, a sometimes awkward camera and controls that do not feel as polished as current platformers.

A classic returning through Nintendo’s subscription service would normally be simple good news. Here, it also exposes the gap between Nintendo’s willingness to preserve an older Rayman game and Ubisoft’s limited use of the character. The company has largely relied on reissues, remakes and appearances outside a main Rayman game instead of announcing a new numbered sequel.

What “abandoned” means in Rayman’s case
There is no public explanation in the cited coverage that definitively identifies why Ubisoft stopped making new Rayman platformers. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Rayman has been absent from a new mainline adventure for years, and his most recent substantial game appearance was as downloadable content in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, where he was a side character rather than the lead.
That is different from total inactivity. Ubisoft’s current Rayman activity is primarily built around older material. Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition is a 2026 collection, and Rayman Legends Retold is a remake rather than an entirely new numbered entry. Those projects keep the brand visible, but they do not answer the question fans are really asking: when will Rayman headline a wholly new platform game?

Choosing between Rayman 2 and Legends
Choose Rayman 2 if you specifically want Rayman’s 3D era and the convenience of a subscription catalog. It is the historically important release Nintendo is resurfacing, but its original camera and control design are part of the package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Nintendo Everything reported in June 2026 that Ubisoft said the original Rayman Legends would remain on digital storefronts rather than being delisted; physical copies were also still available.

Where Rayman Legends Retold fits
Rayman Legends Retold should not be treated as the long-awaited next numbered Rayman game. It is described as a remake and as a “bold reimagining” of the acclaimed platformer, with new content and narrative twists. That makes it a potentially meaningful update for returning players, but its existence still represents renewed treatment of an older game rather than a clean break into a new series entry.

Why Nintendo’s move makes Ubisoft’s absence more obvious
Nintendo’s catalog addition gives players a legitimate way to revisit one of Rayman’s strongest adventures without tracking down original Nintendo 64 hardware. It also creates a direct contrast: Nintendo is actively putting the character in front of a current audience, while Ubisoft’s recent output, as documented here, consists of a remake, a commemorative collection and a supporting-role appearance in another franchise.
For fans, that makes the release feel bittersweet. The game is accessible, critically respected and still recognizably distinctive, yet the most visible sign of Rayman’s return is a 1999-era adventure being added to a subscription library. Until Ubisoft announces a genuinely new mainline title, the company’s treatment of Rayman looks less like a revival strategy and more like maintenance of a dormant catalog.

The practical verdict
Rayman 2 is worth trying through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack if you enjoy classic 3D platformers and can tolerate period-specific camera and control design. Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition remains the straightforward purchase for modern 2D play, while the 30th Anniversary Edition is aimed at players who want a physical archive with substantial bonus material. None of those choices changes the central problem: Ubisoft is bringing back Rayman’s past without yet showing what his future is.
