Choose the UniFi CloudKey+ (UCK-G2-PLUS) if you need to host UniFi Protect, record camera footage locally, and manage a small or medium camera system. Choose the UniFi AI Key (AI-Key) if you already have Protect recording and want edge-based smart detections, richer classifications, and natural-language event search. The AI Key is an analysis companion, not a documented replacement for the CloudKey+ recorder.

These appliances solve different problems. CloudKey+ is the console and storage layer; AI Key is the artificial-intelligence layer. Your existing Protect architecture, camera count, power hardware, and need for local storage should determine the purchase.

AI Key vs CloudKey+: the short answer

The most important distinction is architectural:

  • UniFi CloudKey+ (UCK-G2-PLUS): a UniFi console that runs Protect and other UniFi applications, with an included, upgradeable 1 TB hard drive for local recordings.
  • UniFi AI Key (AI-Key): a PoE++ edge-AI appliance that enhances an existing UniFi Protect deployment with smart detections, detailed classifications, and natural-language search.

If you are building a camera system from scratch and do not already own a Protect console or recorder, CloudKey+ is the logical starting point. If cameras are already recording through Protect and your priority is finding events quickly or improving detection detail, AI Key addresses that specific gap.

Running both can make sense when one device provides the Protect console and recording role while the other performs AI analysis. That is an architectural inference from Ubiquiti’s documented product roles; confirm that your current Protect release supports the combination before buying.

What each appliance actually does

UniFi CloudKey+ is the console and recorder

CloudKey+ hosts the UniFi applications that administer your site. Ubiquiti lists Network, Protect, Access, Talk, and Connect support on the appliance. Protect is the relevant application for cameras: it manages compatible cameras, stores recordings on the internal drive, and provides the viewing and administration interface.

The appliance includes a 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA hard disk. The drive is user-upgradeable, so storage capacity can be increased or a failed disk can be replaced without replacing the console. CloudKey+ therefore combines application hosting and local video storage in one small unit.

AI Key is an edge-analysis companion

AI Key is described by Ubiquiti as an edge-AI appliance that enhances any UniFi Protect deployment. It processes smart-detection workloads, adds detailed classifications, and enables natural-language search across events. Processing occurs on the appliance rather than requiring a separate cloud analysis service.

Ubiquiti’s specifications do not present AI Key as a camera recorder or as a replacement for a Protect console. Its listed 256 GB SSD is appliance storage for the AI system; do not assume it provides the same recording function as CloudKey+’s 1 TB surveillance drive.

How many cameras can CloudKey+ handle?

Ubiquiti publishes two different capacity descriptions, each in a different official context. Do not combine them into one promise:

Ubiquiti page context Published capacity How to interpret it
CloudKey+ technical specifications 24 HD, 14 2K, or 8 4K managed cameras A resolution-based specification for the appliance
UniFi Physical Security FAQ Up to 20 HD cameras or 7 4K cameras A broader small-to-medium-deployment guidance figure

Both sets of numbers are official and were accessed on October 18, 2026. They may reflect different assumptions about camera settings, recording modes, analytics, or product-software versions. For system design, use the more conservative figure when you cannot test your exact mix, and check the current Protect documentation for the release you will run.

AI Key’s published limit is not a camera-count limit. Its specification is up to 1,800 smart detections per hour, so its sizing question is how many detection events your site generates rather than how many streams it records. A busy scene with frequent motion can create a very different workload from a quiet property with the same number of cameras.

Storage, retention, and privacy

CloudKey+ storage strategy

The included 1 TB 2.5-inch SATA HDD is intended for local Protect recordings. Retention depends on camera resolution, frame rate, motion-versus-continuous recording, and the number of cameras. Higher-resolution continuous streams consume space faster than motion-only recording. Because the drive is user-upgradeable, you can plan a larger SATA replacement when retention requirements exceed the factory disk.

Before replacing the drive, export any recordings you must preserve and follow the current CloudKey+ migration or replacement procedure. A disk swap is a storage upgrade, not a guarantee that old recordings will be readable if the original drive is removed without a backup.

AI Key storage is not a second video archive

AI Key lists a 256 GB SSD. Ubiquiti’s product description assigns it the edge-AI role and does not state that it stores a complete, independent Protect video history. Treat the SSD as system and analysis storage unless the current Protect release explicitly documents another use.

Local footage and recurring fees

Ubiquiti’s UniFi Physical Security FAQ states that footage remains local to the UniFi Console and that UniFi has no licensing fees or hidden recurring fees. Remote access is provided through Site Manager or the Protect mobile app. “No recurring fees” does not mean hardware, replacement drives, network equipment, electricity, or optional remote-access infrastructure are free; it means Ubiquiti does not require a subscription license for the stated UniFi security features.

Power and network requirements

AI Key requires PoE++

AI Key has one GbE RJ45 port and requires PoE++ in the 50–57 V range. Your switch or injector must explicitly provide PoE++ at a compatible voltage and budget. A regular PoE or PoE+ source should not be assumed to power it. If the device repeatedly reboots, fails to adopt, or disappears under load, verify the power class and per-port wattage before troubleshooting software.

CloudKey+ is more flexible to power

CloudKey+ uses a GbE PoE interface and can also use an optional 9 V USB-C quick-charge adapter. That gives you a choice between powering it from a compatible network switch and using a local adapter when PoE ports are unavailable. The camera streams still need network connectivity and suitable switches; the console’s alternate power input does not power cameras connected elsewhere.

Network placement

Place CloudKey+ where it can reach the camera VLAN and the management network. Place AI Key where it can communicate with the Protect console and camera event data without being isolated by firewall rules. Keep both appliances on reliable wired Ethernet; the products list GbE interfaces, not wireless operation.

Which one should you buy?

Choose CloudKey+ when you need a complete Protect foundation

  • You do not yet have a UniFi console running Protect.
  • You need local recording in the same appliance that manages cameras.
  • You want a built-in 1 TB drive with a user-upgradeable 2.5-inch SATA bay.
  • You also plan to run UniFi Network, Access, Talk, or Connect.
  • Your deployment fits the published small-to-medium capacity guidance.

Choose AI Key when Protect recording already works

  • A CloudKey+, another supported UniFi console, or another documented Protect host already records your cameras.
  • You want smart detections and more detailed event classifications at the edge.
  • Natural-language event search would reduce the time spent scrubbing recordings.
  • You can supply PoE++ and your expected workload is within 1,800 smart detections per hour.

Consider both for a two-layer design

A CloudKey+ plus AI Key separates durable recording from compute-intensive event analysis. This can be attractive for a site that needs the CloudKey+’s local drive and multi-application console but also wants AI-assisted investigation. It adds another appliance, a PoE++ requirement, a network port, and a compatibility dependency, so verify adoption and feature support in the current Protect software before deployment.

Installation planning checklist

Before buying CloudKey+

  • Count cameras by resolution and compare the result with both official capacity contexts.
  • Estimate retention from continuous or motion recording, frame rate, and expected activity.
  • Decide whether the included 1 TB disk is sufficient or budget for a larger 2.5-inch SATA drive.
  • Confirm a PoE source or obtain the optional 9 V USB-C power adapter.
  • Reserve a wired GbE connection on the management network.

Before buying AI Key

  • Identify the existing Protect console that will remain responsible for recording.
  • Estimate event volume, especially in high-traffic views, and compare it with 1,800 smart detections per hour.
  • Reserve a PoE++ port or a compatible PoE++ injector delivering 50–57 V.
  • Confirm a free GbE switch port and routing between AI Key and the Protect system.
  • Check the current Protect release for AI Key compatibility and supported search features.

Setup workflow

Deploying CloudKey+

  1. Connect CloudKey+ to the wired network and power it through compatible GbE PoE or the optional 9 V USB-C adapter.
  2. Open the UniFi setup or Site Manager workflow, adopt the console, and apply current firmware updates.
  3. Enable the Protect application from the console’s application list.
  4. Adopt compatible cameras, assign recording modes, and set resolution and retention according to available disk space.
  5. Verify live view, playback, motion events, and remote access through Site Manager or the Protect mobile app.
  6. Record the drive model, retention estimate, administrator recovery details, and backup procedure before handing the system to users.

Adding AI Key to an existing Protect site

  1. Connect AI Key to a compatible PoE++ source and a wired GbE network path.
  2. Wait for the appliance to boot, then locate it in the UniFi management workflow used by your Protect deployment.
  3. Update AI Key and Protect to mutually supported software versions before enabling analysis.
  4. Adopt or associate AI Key with the Protect site according to the current on-screen instructions.
  5. Enable the desired smart detections and classifications, then test event generation on representative cameras.
  6. Use natural-language searches against known events and confirm that results correspond to the expected camera, time, and classification.
  7. Monitor event volume and PoE power stability during the busiest period of the day.

Troubleshooting common failures

AI Key will not power on

Check that the switch or injector is PoE++ rather than merely PoE or PoE+, that the port is enabled, and that the source can deliver the required 50–57 V. Test another known-good PoE++ port and inspect the Ethernet cable. Do not diagnose adoption or firmware until the power negotiation is stable.

AI Key appears but produces no useful detections

Confirm that it is associated with the correct Protect deployment, that supported software versions are installed, and that detections are enabled for the intended cameras. Generate a controlled event in a well-lit view, then inspect whether the camera itself supplies the event data needed by the selected classification. A quiet scene may simply produce too few events to validate the workflow.

CloudKey+ runs out of recording space

Review camera resolution, continuous-recording settings, frame rate, and retention targets. Reduce unnecessary continuous recording or install a larger compatible 2.5-inch SATA drive after backing up required footage and following Ubiquiti’s current replacement procedure. Increasing storage does not increase the published camera-processing ceiling.

Cameras exceed the preferred capacity

Recalculate using the resolution-based figures and the FAQ’s small-to-medium guidance rather than assuming every camera consumes the same resources. Mixed HD, 2K, and 4K systems should be evaluated against the actual recording and analytics settings. If the deployment is near a limit, validate it with the exact Protect version and camera mix before committing to a single CloudKey+.

Remote viewing fails while local viewing works

Check the console’s internet path, account permissions, Site Manager status, and Protect mobile-app configuration. Local footage can remain available even when remote access is unavailable; restoring the network path should be treated separately from repairing recordings or camera adoption.

Frequently asked buying questions

Does AI Key replace CloudKey+?

Not on the documented roles. AI Key enhances an existing Protect deployment, while CloudKey+ hosts Protect and records locally. Replacing CloudKey+ would require another supported Protect console or recorder.

Can CloudKey+ run UniFi Protect without a subscription?

Yes. Ubiquiti’s Physical Security FAQ says UniFi has no licensing fees or hidden recurring fees, and footage remains local to the UniFi Console. Hardware and network costs still apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need PoE++ for AI Key?

Yes. Ubiquiti specifies PoE++ at 50–57 V for AI Key. CloudKey+ instead accepts GbE PoE or the optional 9 V USB-C adapter.

What does AI Key do if CloudKey+ already has Protect?

It adds edge analysis: smart detections, detailed classifications, and natural-language search. CloudKey+ continues to provide the console and recording functions.

Bottom line

Buy UniFi CloudKey+ (UCK-G2-PLUS) for the foundational job: running Protect, storing footage locally, and managing a small or medium camera installation with upgradeable disk capacity. Buy UniFi AI Key (AI-Key) only when that Protect foundation already exists and you specifically need edge-AI detections, richer classifications, or natural-language event search. They are complementary appliances, not interchangeable versions of the same product.
