A UA702 circuit uses a historic bipolar integrated-circuit operational amplifier designed for wideband signal work. Texas Instruments’ June 1976 data book describes the uA702 as a high-gain amplifier with differential inputs, a single-ended emitter-follower output, and external components for compensation. Its stated useful application frequency reaches 30 MHz, but that period specification is not a guarantee that any circuit will operate correctly at that frequency.
What is the uA702?
The uA702 was an early integrated-circuit operational amplifier. Delft University of Technology’s Structured Electronics Design: Introduction identifies it as “the first integrated-circuit operational amplifier, realized in a bipolar IC technology” and attributes it to Bob Widlar at Fairchild in 1964 (Delft University of Technology).

Texas Instruments’ June 1976 linear integrated-circuits data book describes the uA702 as a high-gain, wideband amplifier with differential inputs and a single-ended emitter-follower output (Texas Instruments, 1976 data book). This is a period component, not a modern general-purpose op amp whose behavior can be assumed from a familiar standard circuit.

The TI data book gives an open-loop voltage amplification of 3,600 typical and a common-mode rejection ratio of 100 dB typical. It also calls the device particularly useful for linear and nonlinear signal transfer or generation up to 30 MHz. These are historical manufacturer specifications, not measurements of a particular surviving part or a performance guarantee for a circuit assembled today.

The data book says external components can compensate the uA702 for stable operation under different feedback or loading conditions. Consequently, the 30 MHz figure cannot be treated as a universal bandwidth for every closed-loop gain, load, compensation network, or layout. A proposed UA702 circuit needs to be evaluated in its actual configuration.
What to check in a UA702 circuit
- Exact device identity: confirm the manufacturer and full part suffix rather than relying on the UA702 name alone.
- Package and pinout: verify the individual part’s package and pin connections against its applicable documentation before wiring or making a board.
- Operating limits: check the relevant electrical limits and operating conditions for that specific device. TI’s 1976 documentation characterizes the uA702M over −55°C to 125°C; do not assume that range applies to every suffix or part.
- Compensation: identify the compensation components required for the intended feedback and load conditions. Do not assume a unity-gain connection is stable solely because it is called a unity-gain circuit.
- Practical implementation: account for gain, loading, layout, and stability when assessing a high-frequency design. A headline frequency specification alone does not settle those questions.
Is a UA702M interchangeable with a Fairchild μA702?
TI’s documentation says its uA702M was designed to be interchangeable with the Fairchild μA702. That statement is specific to the documented parts; it does not establish that every similarly named device, suffix, package, or present-day listing is interchangeable. Check the individual part’s pinout, limits, and compensation requirements before treating it as a drop-in replacement.

Can a UA702 unity-gain circuit be trusted from a schematic alone?
A FOSSEE/eSim fellowship report is indexed with labels for a UA702 schematic and a UA702M unity-gain amplifier test circuit (FOSSEE eSim fellowship report listing). Those labels show that an example is documented; they do not independently validate its schematic, stability, or measured performance. Review the actual circuit and the matching device documentation rather than treating the example’s title as proof that any unity-gain arrangement works.

What about finding the part today?
The historical TI documentation establishes the device’s identity and an interchangeability note, not current inventory, seller reliability, listing authenticity, or the status of any substitute. If sourcing a legacy uA702, assess the exact manufacturer and suffix, package and pinout, relevant limits, compensation needs, and seller provenance. No current stock or reputable supplier is established by the historical specifications.
