U.S. Stocks Hold Near Records as Oil Prices Swing Lower

U.S. stocks were little changed near record levels in the Associated Press’s October 5, 2026 morning snapshot, even as Brent crude swung between $100 and $103 a barrel. The figures below are a time-stamped snapshot, not closing prices or live market data.

Where the major U.S. indexes stood

At 9:35 a.m. Eastern on October 5, the indexes were moving in different directions. The Associated Press reported the S&P 500 was up 0.2% and 0.8% below its summer all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had fallen 103 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.5% and on track to set its own record.

That mix explains the headline: the market was close to its highs, but not every major index was advancing. The Nasdaq’s potential record was a morning outlook, not confirmation that it later set one.

Why oil prices were swinging

Brent crude moved between $100 and $103 per barrel during the morning. Its latest price in the AP snapshot was $101.83, down 0.4%. That latest reading captures only one point in a wide intraday range.

The report linked the uncertainty to questions about when the war with Iran would allow the global crude industry to return to normal. It said that uncertainty had helped push bond yields higher; it did not establish that oil’s movement alone caused the morning’s stock performance.

How Treasury yields can matter for stocks

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 5.30%, from 5.28% late Friday, according to the AP report. Higher yields can increase borrowing costs for households and businesses. They can also make investors less willing to pay high prices for stocks, because bonds offer a competing place to put money.

Rank #2

This is a potential pressure channel, not a guarantee that stocks will fall whenever yields rise. The AP report’s explanation describes why investors watch yields alongside oil and equities; it does not quantify the effect on that morning’s indexes.

Company deals moved individual shares

Acquisition announcements produced much larger moves in the named companies than the broad indexes showed. These were proposed transactions announced on October 5, not confirmation that either deal had closed.

Company or deal Terms reported October 5 Share move in the AP morning report
C.H. Robinson and RXO C.H. Robinson announced it would buy RXO’s truck brokerage business. RXO investors could receive $30.25 per share in cash. RXO rose 23%; C.H. Robinson fell 10.2%.
Schneider Electric and PTC Schneider Electric announced a $205-per-share cash offer for PTC, valuing the transaction at about $22.6 billion. PTC rose 35.3%.

The report did not establish later completion, regulatory approval, or final deal status. A proposed offer price is not the same as a completed cash payment to shareholders.

International markets were mixed

Other markets did not move in lockstep with U.S. stocks. In the same AP report, France’s CAC 40 was down 0.7%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 2.4%.

What this snapshot does—and does not—show

The October 5 morning figures describe a particular moment: U.S. indexes remained near highs, oil had swung sharply, Treasury yields edged up, and deal news lifted some company shares. They are not a guide to current prices or the market’s eventual close that day. For an up-to-date view, check current index, commodity, and yield quotes.
