Yes—U.S. spending on new physical game software is up in the reported 2026 year-to-date comparison. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said it reached $738 million, 5% above the comparable period a year earlier. Spending on Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card releases rose 631%, offsetting a 3% decline across other new physical formats. Those are spending figures, not unit sales, and they do not establish that Game-Key Cards caused a lasting turnaround or that players prefer them.
What the U.S. physical-game figures show
In a post dated October 8, 2026, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that U.S. year-to-date spending on new physical software was $738 million, up 5% year over year. Within that total, spending on Game-Key Card physical releases increased 631%, while spending across all other new physical media types fell 3%. Nintendo Life reproduced Piscatella’s figures.

The comparison is about dollars spent on new physical software. It does not report the number of cards or games sold, Game-Key Cards’ share of physical spending, or the exact end date of the year-to-date period. It also does not provide individual sales figures for any title.
Does that mean Game-Key Cards caused the increase?
The figures show that Game-Key Card spending rose sharply as spending on other new physical formats declined. They do not isolate why. Game-Key Cards are a recently introduced format rolling out across Switch 2 releases, so the growing pool of available titles and the Switch 2 audience may affect the comparison. The figures do not quantify those factors, prices, promotions, or consumer preference. A 631% increase alone cannot tell us which factor drove the change.

Piscatella’s post named Pokémon Pokopia, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, and Resident Evil Requiem as notable Game-Key Card releases, but supplied no title-level sales data. His reported comment about Elden Ring’s Switch 2 chart position is not enough to calculate how much that game contributed to the overall spending increase.
What a Game-Key Card actually is
A Game-Key Card is a physical card, but it does not contain the full game data. Nintendo describes it as a card you insert to download the game; the card must remain inserted when you play. In practical terms, it is a physical key for a game downloaded to the console or compatible storage, not a full-game cartridge.

Nintendo says the initial download and first launch require an internet connection, as well as enough free space in system memory or on a compatible microSD Express card. The card is not tied to a Nintendo Account and can be lent to someone else, who must download the game data too. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card explainer describes the format.

The main difference is where the game data comes from and what you need to keep playing. Nintendo’s format descriptions distinguish a standard game card—which contains game data—from a Game-Key Card, which does not contain the full game data. A digital purchase is downloaded without a physical card.

Storage: when a microSD Express card helps
Downloaded Game-Key Card data takes space. Nintendo says Switch 2 supports storing downloadable software on a microSD Express card; ordinary microSD cards are not compatible for storing Switch 2 game data. A storage card is optional, not a requirement for every Game-Key Card: the console’s system memory can be used if it has enough free space. Check Nintendo’s microSD compatibility guidance before buying a card.

The $738 million figure concerns U.S. spending on new physical software in the reported 2026 year-to-date comparison. It should not be compared as though it were the whole U.S. video game market. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2025 industry figures, revised in March 2026, cover broader categories, including digital content and subscriptions. The final totals were $60.8 billion in total consumer spending, comprising $52.4 billion on content, $5.4 billion on hardware, and $2.9 billion on accessories. Those figures provide industry context, not a like-for-like measure of physical game software.
