On October 8, 2026, wallets that the blockchain analytics firm Arkham linked to the U.S. government moved 12,267 BTC out of a wallet associated with the seizure of bitcoin from the 2016 Bitfinex hack. CoinDesk valued the coins at about $1.01 billion in its report. CoinDesk also reported that the transfer did not include an exchange deposit, so the on-chain record available at publication did not show a sale. That is a description of the observed transaction path. It does not establish what the government intended or what happens to the coins later.

What moved on October 8, 2026

  • Amount: 12,267 BTC, which CoinDesk valued at about $1.01 billion at the time of its article. Dollar values from that date are estimates and will not match current market prices.
  • Source wallet: A wallet associated with funds seized in the Bitfinex hack case, according to Arkham’s wallet attribution as reported by CoinDesk.
  • Destination: New, unlabeled addresses, including a second transaction to a different address. An unlabeled address does not identify its owner or purpose.
  • Exchange activity: None recorded for this transfer, according to CoinDesk.

The government-linked attribution rests on Arkham’s labeling as CoinDesk reported it. No U.S. agency has publicly confirmed this specific movement, and the transaction was not checked independently for this article.

What “no sign of sale” can and cannot support

The phrase reflects the reported destination pattern. CoinDesk described the reshuffling of wallets as more consistent with the observed activity than with a sale. Moving bitcoin between addresses is not the same as selling it, and a sale can still occur through a different route, including a transfer that happens after this one. The reporting supports “no sale indicated at publication.” It does not support a claim that the government will keep the coins, that they are headed to a particular reserve, or that they were never sold.

To check a movement like this yourself, open the transaction ID on a public block explorer and look at each output address. Look for a known exchange or custody deposit address, note whether the coins were split across several outputs, and compare the timestamp with the reporting date. Each of these checks answers a narrower question than “was it sold?”, and each can change as more transactions appear.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Keeping three separate movements apart

Coverage of this story mixes together several distinct sets of coins. The table below separates them.

Activity Date Amount reported Destination Sale established?
12,267 BTC transfer October 8, 2026 12,267 BTC, about $1.01 billion (CoinDesk valuation) New, unlabeled addresses, including a second transaction to a different address No. No exchange deposit reported; no sale indicated at publication
Prior-day Coinbase Prime deposits October 7, 2026 (the day before the transfer) About 3,200 BTC (about $264 million) and $119 million in USDT (CoinDesk valuation) Coinbase Prime deposit addresses, from wallets tied to FTX/Alameda and Bitfinex seizures Not established. Coinbase Prime also provides custody, so a deposit alone does not prove liquidation
Original 2016 Bitfinex theft August 2016 119,754 bitcoin per the U.S. Department of Justice’s court-document account; “approximately 120,000” in the U.S. Attorney’s Office case overview Wallet controlled by Ilya Lichtenstein, per DOJ Not applicable. This is the historical theft, not the October 2026 movement

The Coinbase Prime deposits should not be counted as part of the 12,267 BTC transfer. CoinDesk reported them as separate activity on the previous day.

The Bitfinex case behind the coins

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia says Ilya Lichtenstein hacked the virtual-currency exchange Bitfinex in August 2016 and stole approximately 120,000 bitcoin. Heather Morgan helped launder the proceeds. The office’s case overview was updated October 31, 2024.

The more precise account comes from the Department of Justice’s November 14, 2024 sentencing announcement. DOJ said Lichtenstein fraudulently authorized more than 2,000 transactions that moved 119,754 bitcoin from Bitfinex to a wallet he controlled. Lichtenstein and Morgan pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering on August 3, 2023. Lichtenstein received a five-year prison sentence and three years of supervised release. Use the 119,754 figure when describing the court-document account, and the rounded figure when paraphrasing the case overview.

Forfeiture, the reserve question, and what the sources do not say

CoinDesk reports that a March 2025 executive order directed forfeited bitcoin into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and said that bitcoin should not be sold. That is relevant policy context, but CoinDesk’s reporting does not establish that this transfer was made for reserve management, identify the owner of the receiving wallets, or confirm what happened to the coins afterward.

The Justice Department’s sentencing release addressed the forfeiture process in general terms:

That statement, issued by the Office of Public Affairs on November 14, 2024, describes how third parties can file claims against forfeited property. It does not mention the October 2026 transfer.
