Short answer: A company reporting under current U.S. GAAP generally measures in-scope Bitcoin at fair value every reporting date and records each period’s increase or decrease in net income. Under IFRS, an ordinary corporate holder generally accounts for Bitcoin as an IAS 38 intangible asset, choosing either a cost model or, when the standard’s conditions are met, a revaluation model. Cost-model reporting does not recognize upward price movements; a qualifying revaluation increase normally goes to other comprehensive income (OCI), not profit or loss. A broker-trader may instead apply IAS 2 inventory rules.
Comparison at a glance
| Question | U.S. GAAP (current rule) | IFRS ordinary corporate holder | IFRS broker-trader exception |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classification | Dedicated crypto-asset guidance in FASB Accounting Standards Codification Subtopic 350-60 for qualifying crypto assets. | Generally an intangible asset under IAS 38 because the holding is separable and does not give the holder a right to a fixed or determinable number of units of currency. | Cryptocurrency held in the ordinary course of a broker-trader business may fall under IAS 2 inventory guidance. |
| Subsequent measurement | Fair value at each reporting date is required for in-scope assets. | Choose the IAS 38 cost model or, if the required conditions are met, the revaluation model. | Apply the applicable IAS 2 inventory measurement requirements. |
| Where price changes go | All changes from remeasurement go to net income. | Cost model: no upward revaluation. Revaluation model: increases generally go to OCI and revaluation surplus; decreases generally go to profit or loss unless reversing an existing surplus. | Depends on the IAS 2 policy and facts applicable to the broker-trader. |
| Presentation | Qualifying crypto assets are presented separately from other intangible assets. | Included in the IAS 38 intangible-asset category, with the chosen measurement model disclosed. | Presented as inventory when IAS 2 applies. |
| Main earnings effect | Recurring unrealized gains and losses can make reported net income move with Bitcoin’s market price. | Cost-model carrying amounts are not increased for price appreciation; revaluation increases generally bypass profit or loss. | Measurement follows the inventory treatment selected under IAS 2. |
The same Bitcoin price can therefore produce very different reported assets, earnings and equity depending on the reporting framework, the entity’s business model and the accounting policy selected under IFRS.

How current U.S. GAAP measures Bitcoin
ASU 2023-08 changed the model
On December 13, 2023, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued Accounting Standards Update 2023-08, which created crypto-asset guidance in Subtopic 350-60. The amendments require an entity to measure qualifying crypto assets at fair value in the statement of financial position each reporting period and recognize changes from remeasurement in net income. Bitcoin that meets the subtopic’s scope requirements is the principal example relevant to corporate balance sheets.
The amendments apply for annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, including interim periods within those annual periods. A calendar-year company therefore generally applies the new model in its 2025 annual reporting and related 2025 interim reporting. Early adoption is permitted, so an eligible company could adopt before its required effective date if it follows the applicable transition rules.

Fair value is the carrying amount, not an optional disclosure
Under the new model, fair value is the balance-sheet measurement itself. The company does not keep Bitcoin at purchase cost and merely disclose a market quote. At every reporting date it remeasures the in-scope units, compares the new fair value with the previous carrying amount, and records the difference in current-period net income. Both increases and decreases are recognized, whether or not the company has sold any Bitcoin.
For example, assume a company buys 10 Bitcoin for a total cost of $400,000. If the reporting-date fair value is $600,000, the crypto-asset balance is $600,000 and the company records a $200,000 pretax gain in net income. If the next reporting date’s fair value is $450,000, the balance falls to $450,000 and the company records a $150,000 pretax loss for that period. The figures are illustrative; the accounting result follows the reporting-date fair values and the entity’s actual units.
Separate presentation from other intangibles
Qualifying crypto assets are presented separately from other intangible assets. A company should not bury Bitcoin in a single “intangible assets” line that combines software, trademarks and goodwill-like balances. The separate presentation helps users identify the size of the crypto position and its exposure to market movements.

What happened before ASU 2023-08
Before the update, U.S. GAAP generally treated Bitcoin as an indefinite-lived intangible asset carried at cost less impairment. An impairment loss reduced the carrying amount, but an increase in Bitcoin’s price was not recognized until disposal. The result was asymmetric: declines could reduce reported assets and earnings, while recoveries did not restore the carrying amount through an upward remeasurement. ASU 2023-08 replaces that approach for assets within its scope.
How IFRS classifies and measures Bitcoin
Why ordinary holdings are usually IAS 38 intangibles
In its 2019 agenda decision, the IFRS Interpretations Committee concluded that a cryptocurrency holding generally meets the IAS 38 definition of an intangible asset. The reasoning is that the holding is capable of being separated from the holder and sold or transferred individually, and it does not give the holder a right to receive a fixed or determinable number of units of currency. A normal operating company that holds Bitcoin for investment or treasury purposes therefore starts with IAS 38 rather than a cryptocurrency-specific standard.
IAS 38 cost model
With the cost model, the asset remains based on its accounting cost, subject to the requirements that apply to the IAS 38 asset. A rise in Bitcoin’s quoted price does not by itself create an upward revaluation in the financial statements. This avoids the recurring fair-value gains that U.S. GAAP now sends through net income, but it can also leave the reported carrying amount far below the current market price when Bitcoin has appreciated substantially.

IAS 38 revaluation model
IAS 38 permits a revaluation model when the standard’s conditions are met. When the carrying amount is increased by a qualifying revaluation, the increase generally is recognized in OCI and accumulated in revaluation surplus rather than recorded immediately in profit or loss. A decrease generally is recognized in profit or loss, except to the extent that it reverses a credit previously recorded in revaluation surplus; that portion is recognized in OCI.

The company must apply its policy consistently to the relevant class of assets and explain the model used, rather than selecting fair value only in years when Bitcoin has risen.
Broker-trader inventory exception
The IFRS conclusion is not one-size-fits-all. If the entity is a broker-trader holding cryptocurrency in the ordinary course of business, IAS 2 inventory guidance may apply instead of IAS 38. The company’s role, ordinary activities and purpose for holding the units determine whether this exception is relevant. A corporate treasury holding is not automatically a broker-trader simply because it buys and sells Bitcoin occasionally.

How the same price movement appears in each framework
The following illustration isolates accounting presentation; it is not a forecast or a statement about any particular company. Assume 10 Bitcoin were acquired for $400,000 and are worth $600,000 at year-end.
| Reporting approach | Year-end carrying amount | Effect of the $200,000 increase | What happens if value later falls to $450,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. GAAP, Subtopic 350-60 | $600,000 fair value | $200,000 gain in net income for the period. | $150,000 loss in net income in the later period, assuming no other changes. |
| IFRS IAS 38 cost model | Generally remains at the accounting cost, subject to applicable IAS 38 requirements. | No upward revaluation solely because the market price rose. | A decline is assessed under the requirements applicable to the intangible asset. |
| IFRS IAS 38 revaluation model | $600,000 if the revaluation policy and conditions are met. | The increase generally goes to OCI and revaluation surplus, not current-period profit. | A decrease generally goes to profit or loss, except to the extent it reverses an existing revaluation surplus, which is recognized in OCI. |
| IFRS IAS 2 broker-trader treatment | Determined under the applicable inventory policy. | Not determined by IAS 38; the broker-trader’s IAS 2 requirements govern. | Continue applying the IAS 2 policy and facts specific to the trading activity. |
Thus, “unrealized gain” does not have a universal location. Under current U.S. GAAP it is ordinarily an earnings item; under an IFRS revaluation model it is ordinarily an OCI item; under an IFRS cost model it is not recognized as an upward carrying-amount change.

Transitioning a U.S. GAAP company to the new rule
Adoption is more than changing a balance-sheet caption. The company needs a controlled process that identifies in-scope units, reconstructs historical information and supports the opening-equity adjustment.
Best Value
- Confirm scope. Inventory every digital asset and determine which holdings meet Subtopic 350-60’s qualifying-asset requirements. Keep nonqualifying tokens or contractual rights in their applicable accounting models rather than assuming that every digital asset is Bitcoin-like.
- Establish the adoption date. For annual periods beginning after December 15, 2024, plan the first required annual and interim reporting periods. If early adoption is elected, document the election and the period from which the amendments apply.
- Reconstruct the pre-adoption carrying amount. Gather acquisition records, unit counts, prior impairment charges and disposals. The amount that would have been reported immediately before adoption is needed to calculate the transition adjustment.
- Measure fair value at adoption. Determine the fair value of each in-scope holding using the company’s documented ASC 820 valuation process, including the principal market and relevant valuation inputs.
- Record the cumulative-effect adjustment. The transition uses a cumulative-effect adjustment to opening retained earnings. It is not presented as a normal-period Bitcoin gain or loss in the adoption period’s operating results.
- Build the recurring close. At every interim and annual close, reconcile units, obtain support for fair value, calculate the change from the prior carrying amount, post the net-income entry and prepare the required disclosures.
Choosing and documenting an IFRS policy
- Identify the holder’s business model. Explain whether Bitcoin is held as a treasury or investment asset, or in the ordinary course of broker-trader activity. That conclusion determines whether IAS 38 or IAS 2 is the starting point.
- For IAS 38, select the measurement model. Document the reasons for using the cost model or, when the required conditions are met, the revaluation model. The policy should cover the relevant class of assets rather than switching models opportunistically.
- Define the valuation date and evidence. Retain unit records, exchange or market data and the rationale for any fair-value measurement used under the revaluation model.
- Map entries to profit or loss and OCI. Configure the ledger so revaluation increases, decreases and reversals follow IAS 38 rules, with revaluation surplus movements separated from current earnings.
- Prepare IAS 38 and IFRS 13 notes. State the measurement model, useful-life information and revaluation details where relevant, and provide IFRS 13 fair-value disclosures when fair value is used.
Disclosure requirements and what readers should expect to see
U.S. GAAP crypto-specific disclosures
FASB’s update adds enhanced annual and interim disclosures for significant crypto holdings. Required information includes the asset name, number of units, cost basis, fair value and an activity rollforward. The cost basis is disclosed even though fair value is the balance-sheet measurement; it helps users understand how much the company invested and how much of the reported amount reflects market movement.
Management should also explain the accounting policy, concentration and liquidity risks in a way that connects the note to the reported numbers. The valuation file should identify the principal market and inputs used under ASC 820. Unit totals in the note should reconcile to custody records, the general ledger and transaction-level activity.
IFRS disclosures
An IFRS company should disclose whether it uses the IAS 38 cost or revaluation model and provide the IAS 38 information relevant to that choice, including useful-life and revaluation information where applicable. If fair value is used, IFRS 13 disclosures apply. A broker-trader applying IAS 2 explains the inventory policy and the information required for that standard rather than presenting the holding as an IAS 38 intangible.
Controls over units, custody and valuation
- Unit reconciliation: Reconcile blockchain or custodian statements to the subledger and general ledger at each reporting date. Investigate transfers, staking-related movements if relevant to the facts, disposals and lost or inaccessible keys rather than carrying unexplained differences.
- Segregation of ownership: Separate the company’s proprietary Bitcoin from assets held for customers. Wallet addresses, legal agreements and custody reports should identify whose assets are represented.
- Valuation governance: Define the principal market, price source, cutoff time and approval of valuation inputs. Retain evidence for unusual price dislocations or periods when a normally used market is unavailable.
- Journal-entry review: Under U.S. GAAP, verify that the period-over-period fair-value change reaches net income. Under IFRS revaluation accounting, verify the split between OCI, revaluation surplus and profit or loss.
- Disclosure tie-out: Tie units, cost basis, fair value and rollforward totals to the audited ledger and custody evidence before filing annual or interim reports.
Customer assets and SEC SAB 121
A platform’s responsibility for customer cryptocurrency is a separate accounting question from its own Bitcoin investment. SEC Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 discusses a safeguarding liability and corresponding fair-value measurement when a reporting entity is responsible for crypto-assets held for platform users. The analysis depends on the entity’s obligations and control of the customer assets. A company should not assume that its proprietary holdings and customer-held assets belong in the same balance-sheet line or follow the same journal entries.
Practical decision framework
Use this sequence when reviewing a company’s filing or designing its close process:
- Which framework applies? Identify whether the financial statements use U.S. GAAP or IFRS and note the reporting period, because U.S. GAAP changed for periods beginning after December 15, 2024.
- Whose Bitcoin is it? Distinguish proprietary holdings from customer assets subject to safeguarding obligations.
- What is the holder’s activity? An ordinary corporate holder generally starts with IAS 38 under IFRS; a broker-trader may start with IAS 2.
- Where does the price movement go? U.S. GAAP: net income. IFRS cost model: no upward revaluation. IFRS revaluation model: generally OCI for increases, with reversal rules for decreases.
- Can the numbers be substantiated? Confirm units, cost basis, fair value, market evidence, policy elections, transition entries and disclosure rollforwards all agree.
For investors, the key comparison is not simply the Bitcoin price. It is the interaction between classification, measurement model and income location. Two companies with identical holdings can report different assets and earnings because one is applying mandatory U.S. GAAP fair value while the other is applying an IFRS IAS 38 policy.
