The Associated Press’s 04:04 UTC report described these as the day’s market backdrop; it did not establish that any one of them caused futures to fall.
How far were U.S. futures down?
In its October 7 premarket report, the Associated Press put all three major U.S. index futures lower. The S&P 500 had closed the prior day at a record 7,818.93.

| Index futures | Change reported by AP |
|---|---|
| S&P 500 | Down 0.1% |
| Dow | Down 0.3% |
| Nasdaq | Down 0.4% |
These are premarket figures from the AP report, not live quotes or the eventual closing performance. AP also reported that the S&P 500 stood 23% above its late-March trough, putting the small futures declines against a broader rally.
What were oil prices and Treasury yields doing?
AP reported a rebound in crude prices and higher long-term Treasury yields in its market snapshot. The figures below are the levels and daily changes cited in that report, not current prices.

| Indicator | AP-reported figure on October 7 |
|---|---|
| Brent crude | Up 1.3% to $101.88 per barrel |
| U.S. benchmark crude | Up 0.6% to $89.99 per barrel |
| 10-year Treasury yield | 5.33% |
| 30-year Treasury yield | 5.71% |
Brent was about $55 per barrel above its level at the same time a year earlier, according to AP. The report said yields had edged down earlier in the week before rising in this snapshot. Longer-term yields matter to borrowing conditions: the 10-year Treasury yield can be an indicator of credit costs ahead, particularly for companies that rely on borrowing.
Why were investors watching the Fed minutes?
The Federal Reserve was scheduled to release minutes from its September meeting later on October 7. At that meeting, officials raised the key interest rate. Minutes can give investors more detail about policymakers’ discussion and their views on the policy and rate outlook.

The AP premarket report anticipated the release but did not quote or analyze the minutes, so it did not establish what the document would reveal or how markets would respond. The minutes were an upcoming source of policy information, not an explanation confirmed by the report for the morning’s futures moves.

Earnings expectations and the calendar
AP reported that PepsiCo was due to report Thursday, Delta Air Lines on Friday, and several major banks the following week. FactSet, as cited by AP, expected nearly 30% year-over-year growth in S&P 500 earnings per share. If realized, that would mark a third consecutive quarter with growth above 25%; it was a forecast, not a reported result.

Technology shares
Technology was the biggest premarket decliner in AP’s account. Micron was down more than 3% and AMD nearly 2% before the open; Nvidia and Broadcom were also lower. AP noted investor caution about how much earnings growth was coming from companies competing in artificial intelligence, an area that can be sensitive to more difficult borrowing conditions. These share moves and concerns were additional context, not proof of a single cause for the broader futures decline.
Markets outside the United States
European and Asian markets were lower in the AP report, while Shanghai was closed for a national holiday. In Europe, AP cited the CAC 40 down 1% to 7,783.00, the FTSE 100 down 0.8% to 10,460.81, and the DAX down 1.3% to 25,116.49. Those are report-time observations, not evidence that every market moved for the same reason.

What the snapshot does—and does not—show
The report captures a premarket combination of lower U.S. futures, rising crude prices, elevated long-term yields, and anticipation of the Fed minutes, alongside earnings and overseas-market context. It does not establish a direct causal chain among those developments, provide the minutes’ contents, or show the market reaction after their release. Because prices and yields change continuously, the figures describe the AP snapshot published at 04:04 UTC on October 7, 2026—not conditions later that day.
