For U.S. federal income tax, staking rewards and mined cryptocurrency are generally taxable as ordinary income when you receive them and can control them; certain airdrops are taxable when new tokens from a hard fork are received under the same control test. Selling or exchanging those tokens later can create a separate capital gain or loss. The rules below describe federal treatment, not state or non-U.S. law, and distinguish transactions before 2025 from those on or after January 1, 2025 where IRS guidance does.
When do staking rewards, mining proceeds, and airdrops become taxable?
The key question is generally when you receive units and gain dominion and control over them—not when you cash them out. For a cash-method taxpayer, the amount included in income is the units’ fair market value in U.S. dollars at the date and time control is obtained. The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. tax purposes. IRS: Digital assets

How staking reward timing works
Revenue Ruling 2023-14 says a cash-method taxpayer includes validation rewards in gross income in the tax year the taxpayer gains dominion and control, valued at that time. The ruling also applies when staking is performed through a cryptocurrency exchange. A reward need not be sold or converted to dollars before the income rule can apply.
Control depends on what you can do with the reward
A platform’s label or accounting entry is not by itself the whole analysis. In Paschall v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2026-46, the Tax Court considered Cardano rewards automatically credited monthly to a custodial platform account for tax year 2021. Although transfers to other platforms were restricted, the taxpayer could sell the tokens on the platform. On those facts, the court held that the rewards were taxable upon receipt. The stipulated amount of other income attributable to staking rewards in that case was $33,354; it is a case-specific figure, not a typical reward amount. Paschall v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2026-46

How mining income and self-employment tax differ
IRS Notice 2014-21 says that a taxpayer who mines convertible virtual currency includes its fair market value in gross income when received. That income-inclusion rule does not by itself mean every miner is carrying on a trade or business.

If mining constitutes a trade or business and is not performed as an employee, net earnings from the activity may also be subject to self-employment tax. Whether the activity is a business depends on the facts. Business operations can also affect which forms and schedules apply.

Revenue Ruling 2019-24 answers a specific question: what happens when a hard fork is followed by an airdrop of new cryptocurrency. If no new units are received, the ruling says the fork itself produces no income. If new units are received and the taxpayer can exercise dominion and control over them, ordinary income arises at their fair market value at receipt.

Ledger entry and platform support matter, but are not conclusive by themselves
The ruling says an airdrop is generally received when the new units are recorded on the distributed ledger, though constructive receipt may occur earlier. A ledger entry alone does not establish receipt if the taxpayer cannot exercise dominion and control. For example, if an exchange does not support the new token and does not credit it to the taxpayer’s account, the taxpayer may not have received it for this purpose.
The ruling does not establish a universal tax rule for every claim-based airdrop, promotional distribution, restricted token, or arrangement unrelated to a hard fork. Those cases require attention to their particular facts and may warrant professional advice.

What happens when you later sell or exchange the tokens?
Income recognition when you receive a reward or airdrop is distinct from a later disposition. If you later sell, exchange, or otherwise dispose of digital assets held as capital assets, you generally calculate gain or loss by comparing the amount realized with adjusted basis. The amount included in income at receipt generally establishes basis for hard-fork airdrop units under Revenue Ruling 2019-24; track that basis so the same value is not treated as a new receipt-income event when you dispose of the units.

For digital assets held as capital assets, the IRS says a holding period of one year or less before sale or exchange generally produces short-term capital gain or loss; more than one year generally produces long-term capital gain or loss. The applicable IRS FAQ material depends on transaction date: Part I generally covers virtual currency transactions completed before January 1, 2025, and Part II generally covers digital asset transactions completed on or after that date. Where to report income and dispositions
For individual returns, IRS digital asset guidance directs taxpayers to report specified ordinary income from forks, staking, and mining on Form 1040 Schedule 1, and to use Form 8949 for sales, exchanges, or other dispositions of digital assets held as capital assets. Business compensation, self-employment activity, and entity returns may require different forms or schedules. Check the instructions for the return and tax year that apply to you. IRS: Digital assets
What records to keep
Keep records that support both the income inclusion and any later disposition. IRS guidance requires sufficient records to establish return positions, and says digital asset transactions must be reported whether or not they result in taxable gain or loss.
- Asset name and number of units received or disposed of.
- Date and time of receipt and disposition, including evidence of when you gained control.
- Fair market value in U.S. dollars at receipt and, for a disposition, the amount realized.
- Adjusted basis and how it was determined.
- Wallet history, exchange statements, transaction identifiers, and relevant platform notices or restriction details.
For covered broker transactions, gross-proceeds reporting on Form 1099-DA begins for transactions on or after January 1, 2025; basis reporting begins for certain transactions on or after January 1, 2026. These information returns do not remove your responsibility to report income and transactions, including when you receive no information return. When to get tax advice
General federal guidance may not settle unusual cases, including pooled staking, tokens with transfer or sale restrictions, mining businesses, entities, or cross-border facts. A tax professional can help assess control, characterization, business status, and the reporting forms for your circumstances.
