U.S. employers announced 43,281 job cuts in September 2026, the lowest September total since 2022, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The figure was 20% below the 54,064 announced in September 2025, but it measures announced plans—not a count of workers who actually left jobs that month.
How many job cuts were announced in September 2026?
Challenger, Gray & Christmas counted 43,281 announced job cuts by U.S.-based employers in September 2026. Its comparable September figures were 54,064 in 2025 and 29,989 in 2022. That makes September 2026 the lowest September reading since 2022, though it remains above the 2022 total.
The year-over-year comparison is 20% fewer announced cuts than in September 2025. Comparing the same calendar month helps account for seasonal differences; it does not mean the number of people unemployed fell by 20%.
What does “announced job cuts” mean?
Challenger’s figures track employer announcements of planned cuts. They are not a direct count of workers who completed a separation during September, nor are they unemployment claims. Announcements and realized job losses are related but distinct measures, so the 43,281 figure should be read as a tally of announced plans rather than a count of people newly out of work.

Are layoffs slowing down?
The September total and the report’s year-to-date industry comparison point to lower announced cuts across much of the tracked economy, but not uniformly. Challenger said 21 of the 30 industries it tracks had announced fewer cuts year to date through September than by the comparable point in 2025. That leaves nine industries outside the lower-count group; the report summary does not establish that all nine had increases.
Andy Challenger said, “We’ve seen layoff activity subside over this year, and September continues to illustrate this point,” according to the September report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The figures support a description of easing announced cuts overall, not a claim that every industry or every measure of employment improved.

Why did technology job cuts rise while the total fell?
Technology-sector employers announced 10,799 cuts in September, up from 6,103 in August, according to Challenger. The technology figure rose month over month even as the overall September total was lower than the previous September. These comparisons cover different scopes: one is a single sector’s August-to-September change, while the other compares all-industry totals across Septembers.
What do the hiring-plan figures say about seasonal work?
The report headline said hiring plans were up 3% over 2025, while also describing early seasonal hiring as weak. Those statements are not contradictory: the reported increase does not establish that seasonal hiring was strong. The available headline information does not specify a broader hiring outcome or establish how many seasonal jobs were ultimately filled.

How does September fit into the year-to-date total?
CBS News reported that employers had announced 573,195 cuts through September 2026, nearly 40% fewer than in the comparable period of 2025. That is a year-to-date figure reported by CBS, not the September-only count of 43,281; the two should not be substituted for one another.

The figures are useful as an indicator of announced employer plans, but they do not predict an individual worker’s risk or describe the full state of the labor market. Someone directly affected by a layoff may want practical transition support; Challenger describes its business as providing outplacement and executive coaching on its company information page. That description identifies a service category, not a recommendation or a guarantee of access.
