Helicopter crews from the U.S. Army’s 101st Combat Aviation Brigade flew the new Advanced Inflight Relief Universal System (AIRUS) during evaluation flights at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from October 5–7, 2026. The work covered Apache, Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters, but it was an airworthiness and human-factors test—not an announcement that AIRUS has been issued across the Army.
Why helicopter pilots need an in-flight relief option
Long missions can leave pilots with no practical opportunity to leave the cockpit. The 101st CAB says some aviators respond by restricting their fluid intake, a practice its health team calls “tactical dehydration.” Capt. Gena Baisa, the brigade’s Holistic Health and Fitness lead dietitian, said, “We had pilots tell us they tactically dehydrate.”

The Army’s stated objective is to give crews a way to relieve themselves without landing or interrupting a mission. Keeping pilots hydrated could reduce discomfort and the distraction of searching for a restroom opportunity during prolonged flights. The sources do not publish medical measurements, performance percentages or a success rate for AIRUS, so the test should be understood as an evaluation of feasibility rather than proof of a quantified performance improvement.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- 1-101 Attack Battalion, flying AH-64 Apache helicopters
- 6-101 Assault Helicopter Battalion, flying UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters
- 7-101 Heavy Lift Battalion, flying CH-47 Chinook helicopters
Participants checked how the system fit in each aircraft, completed human-factors surveys, considered whether it could interfere with emergency egress, and attempted to use it during flight. Those checks matter because a device that works in a stationary demonstration still has to remain usable in a cramped cockpit, under vibration and workload, without obstructing controls or slowing an evacuation.
What AIRUS is
AIRUS is identified in the Army’s report as a product of AIRION Health. Company founder and chief executive Colt Seman said the helicopter evaluation was AIRION’s first test with the Army and its first involving helicopters. The Army article also reports AIRION’s claims of work connected with Boeing’s Starliner program and the International Space Station team; those aerospace connections are company statements reported by the Army, not independent findings in the helicopter evaluation.

The Army presents AIRUS as a different approach from older relief equipment. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Collin McAllister, an Apache pilot who tested the system, described earlier products as “just bags with coagulant inside of them.” The available reports do not provide AIRUS’s detailed mechanical design, dimensions, materials, cleaning process or waste capacity, so those specifications cannot yet be used to judge its day-to-day maintenance burden.
How AIRUS compares with older relief bags
| Evaluation question | Older disposable relief bags | AIRUS in the 2026 Army test |
|---|---|---|
| Basic design | Described by an Apache pilot as bags containing coagulant | Presented as a newer integrated relief system; detailed public design specifications were not stated |
| Reuse and disposal | Disposable bag approach | Reusable or disposable status was not stated in the Army report |
| Fit and comfort | Varies with the bag and user | Fit across crews and body types was specifically examined through human-factors checks |
| Aircraft compatibility | Existing equipment may not address every cockpit layout | Tested in AH-64 Apache, UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters |
| Emergency egress | Not evaluated in the cited report | Egress implications were part of the evaluation |
| Fielding status | Previously available relief-bag concept | Developmental test; no Army-wide adoption announced |
Why aircraft integration is the hard part
Different cockpits, different constraints
An Apache attack helicopter, a Black Hawk assault helicopter and a Chinook heavy-lift helicopter do not offer identical seating, restraints, controls or cabin space. Seman said, “We tested to get the system integrated into the Apache, Black Hawk, and Chinook helicopters.” Testing all three families allows evaluators to identify whether a common system can accommodate those differences or needs aircraft-specific installation and procedures.

Comfort cannot compromise safety
Any relief device must be usable while pilots remain secured in their seats and must not catch on equipment, restrict movement or delay an emergency exit. That is why the Fort Campbell work included fit checks, surveys and egress considerations rather than simply asking whether the device collected waste.
Hydration is only useful if the system is dependable
The health rationale depends on pilots trusting the system enough to drink normally during a long sortie. Leaks, difficult positioning, odor control, cleaning demands or uncertainty about disposal could undermine that benefit. The published account does not report failure rates, sanitation procedures, capacity limits or maintenance intervals.

What the test does—and does not—prove
- Established: The 101st CAB conducted the Army’s first reported helicopter test flights of AIRUS on October 5–7, 2026.
- Established: Apache, Black Hawk and Chinook crews participated in fit, human-factors, egress and in-flight-use evaluations.
- Not established: The Army has not announced fleet-wide fielding, a standard-equipment decision or a procurement contract.
- Not established: No public price, commercial availability, Amazon listing or affiliate program is identified in the reports.
- Not established: The sources provide no sample size, independent performance percentage or overall success rate.
What happens next
A successful demonstration would still need to be followed by formal airworthiness decisions, operating procedures, sanitation and maintenance rules, supply planning and procurement approval. The Army would also need to determine whether AIRUS should be common equipment across aircraft or configured differently for each cockpit. Until those steps are documented, pilots should regard AIRUS as a tested technology rather than standard issue.

AIRUS’s significance will depend on whether it can turn that promising human-factors idea into a safe, clean and dependable system that works under real mission conditions.
