Choose a streaming microphone for your room, speaking distance, and connection—not because one microphone type is universally “best.” In a noisy or untreated room, a directional dynamic mic used close to your mouth is often a sensible starting point. In a quiet, controlled space, a condenser can capture detailed voice, instruments, or more than one person. USB is usually simpler to connect; a conventional XLR mic generally needs an audio interface or mixer.
Start with your room and recording setup
Before choosing a microphone, answer four questions: how much room noise will it hear, how close can it sit to the speaker, how many sound sources must it capture, and what can you connect to your computer? A mic that suits a close, solo desk stream may be a poor match for a moving presenter or a group conversation.

- Noisy or untreated room: Consider a directional mic you can keep close to your mouth. A dynamic model is a reasonable starting point, but it will not eliminate keyboard, fan, or household noise.
- Quiet, controlled room: A condenser may suit detailed voice capture, vocals, or acoustic instruments. Its sensitivity can also bring more ambient sound into the recording.
- One speaker: A front-facing cardioid pattern is a common practical choice.
- Several speakers or sources: Consider a pattern and microphone placement that include all intended voices or instruments. Wider pickup can include more room sound too.
- Limited desk space or frequent movement: A headset, lavalier, or wireless system may be more practical than a desk-mounted mic.
RØDE’s guidance, updated July 20, 2026, explains that microphone types suit different recording environments and applications (RØDE: Which Microphone is best for my setup?). Shure likewise emphasizes that the environment affects microphone and pattern choice (Shure: How to Choose the Right Microphone).

Microphone types and where they fit
Dynamic microphones
Dynamic microphones are commonly used for speech, broadcast, vocals, and live sound. RØDE and Shure describe them as suited to loud sources and comparatively less sensitive to room noise and reflections than condensers. That can make a close-positioned directional dynamic a practical choice for a streamer in an untreated space. Keep your mouth at a consistent distance: moving away can make the voice quieter and change its tone.

Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Condenser microphones
Condensers are known for detailed, wide-response capture and are used for studio recording, voice-over, vocals, and acoustic instruments. They may suit a quiet room or a stream that needs to capture more than one close voice. Their sensitivity is a trade-off: they can also pick up more ambient sound, so assess the room rather than assuming a condenser will sound better.
Ribbon microphones
Ribbon models are specialized studio options associated with smooth or natural sound and high-frequency detail. RØDE and Shure note that their construction is more delicate than typical dynamic microphones. They are not the default choice for an ordinary streaming desk.
Lavalier and headset microphones
A lavalier clips to clothing, leaving the speaker’s hands free. A headset mic moves with the presenter and can keep the mouth-to-mic distance consistent. Either can make sense for presentations, interviews, or mobile formats where a desk mic is inconvenient.

Shotgun microphones and wireless systems
A shotgun mic is highly directional and can help when a mic cannot sit close to the speaker; it is often mounted on a boom or camera. Wireless systems support movement using a transmitter and receiver, but distance, obstructions, and interference from other 2.4 GHz devices can affect performance. These are more specialized options for camera-based, mobile, or on-location streams than a fixed solo desk setup.
Choose a pickup pattern for the voices you want
A polar pattern describes where a microphone picks up sound. It is a choice about what to include, not a ranking of sound quality.
- Cardioid: Primarily picks up sound from the front and reduces sound from other directions. Often practical for one person speaking toward a desk mic.
- Omnidirectional: Captures sound around the microphone. It can include several people or ambient sound, but may also bring in more room noise.
- Bidirectional: Picks up the front and back while rejecting the sides. It may suit two people facing one another across a microphone.
- Supercardioid: More directional than cardioid, useful when tighter pickup is wanted. Placement matters because sound from the sides and rear is not handled identically to cardioid.
With cardioid microphones, the proximity effect means bass frequencies rise as the mic moves closer to the sound source. A close position can make a voice sound fuller, but the change is distance-dependent; listen while adjusting placement rather than relying on a fixed rule.

USB or XLR: compare the whole connection
A USB microphone designed for computers can connect directly, which is usually the simpler setup. A conventional XLR microphone outputs analog audio, so a computer stream generally needs an audio interface or mixer with USB output as the bridge. Twitch’s equipment guide describes that general connection requirement (Twitch: Twitch Sports: Getting Started, published March 19, 2020).

Match the mounting and extras to how you stream
- Desk stand or boom arm: A close mic position can help keep voice level consistent. Make sure the mount lets you position the mic without blocking your screen or keyboard.
- Headphone monitoring: Monitoring lets you hear the signal you are sending and catch problems such as low level or unwanted noise.
- Pop filtering and shock isolation: A pop filter can reduce bursts of air from speech; shock isolation can reduce handling or desk vibration reaching the mic. Check whether the microphone includes these features or whether you need separate accessories.
- Voice and instruments: If the stream includes instruments, evaluate the mic and pattern for those sources too; a choice optimized for close speech is not automatically right for a wider recording.
A practical selection checklist
- Decide whether the mic will capture one close speaker, several people, instruments, or a moving presenter.
- Listen for room noise from the computer, keyboard, household, or reflections, and determine whether you can place the mic close to the speaker.
- Choose a pickup pattern that favors the intended sound: often cardioid for one speaker, bidirectional for two opposite speakers, or omnidirectional when broader pickup is needed.
- Choose USB for a direct computer connection, or account for an interface or mixer when selecting a conventional XLR microphone.
- Check practical details such as mounting, monitoring, pop filtering, and shock isolation against your desk and streaming routine.
- Test the mic in the actual room, adjust its position and gain, and listen back before relying on it live.
Common problems and fixes
The mic picks up keyboard or room noise
Move a directional microphone closer to your mouth and aim its front toward you, while keeping noisy sources outside its strongest pickup direction where practical. A dynamic model may be a sensible option, but placement and the room still matter.
The voice sounds thin or changes when you move
Keep a consistent mouth-to-mic distance. With a cardioid mic, moving closer increases bass through the proximity effect; moving farther away reduces that contribution and may let more room sound in.
The XLR microphone does not appear as a computer input
Check that the mic is connected to an audio interface or mixer and that the interface or mixer is connected to the computer over USB. Select that device as the audio input in your streaming application.

A condenser captures unwanted ambience
Reduce competing room sound where possible, bring the mic closer if the setup allows, and check whether a more directional pattern better fits the intended source. A sensitive mic cannot distinguish wanted from unwanted sound by itself.
A wireless mic cuts out or sounds inconsistent
Check the distance and obstructions between transmitter and receiver, and consider nearby 2.4 GHz devices as a possible interference source. Repositioning the receiver or reducing obstructions may help; wireless performance depends on the environment.
