Two Used Enterprise Hard Drives Made My Spare PCIe Lanes Count

Two used enterprise hard drives can be an inexpensive way to add capacity—but the title alone does not establish what this particular upgrade cost, which drives it used, or whether they were tested. Those details matter: a bargain drive is only a bargain if it works with the PC, arrives in acceptable condition, and costs less overall than realistic alternatives.

What the upgrade can—and cannot—claim

Using spare PCIe lanes for storage generally means installing a host bus adapter (HBA) that connects the PC to SAS or SATA drives. The PCIe slot provides the connection to the computer; the HBA’s ports and cables connect to the drives. The number of available lanes alone does not establish compatibility, performance, or savings.

No drive models, capacities, interface types, controller, purchase price, system configuration, SMART readings, or test results are specified for this build. Without receipts and system records, it is not possible to verify that it was the cheapest upgrade, calculate its cost per usable terabyte, or describe the drives’ condition. Enterprise branding is not evidence that an individual used drive has years of service left.

Check that the drives and controller match

First identify each drive’s exact model, interface, form factor, capacity, and logical and physical sector format if available. SAS and SATA are distinct interfaces; a drive and controller must be compatible with one another, and the motherboard, operating system, cables, and chosen HBA mode also matter. Intel’s comparison is background rather than a universal compatibility list: it is limited to Intel C602-based boards and warns that implementations vary (Intel’s SAS and SATA comparison).

Seagate Exos 22TB SATA HDD 6Gb/s 7200RPM 3.5-inch Enterprise Hard Drive (ST22000NM000C) (Renewed)
  • 22TB Capacity in 3.5 inch Form Factor
  • Enterprise-Grade: Designed for demanding enterprise storage applications and workloads.
  • Highly reliable performance suitable for cloud data centers and massive scale-out data center applications.
  • PowerBalance: Optimizes watts per terabyte (W/TB) for power efficiency.
  • Helium Sealed-Drive Design: Contributes to lower power consumption, reduced weight, and increased durability.

If an HBA is part of the build, identify its exact model and verify its specifications against the motherboard manual and the drive documentation. Record the PCIe slot and lane allocation, connector and cable type, operating-system and driver support, and whether the card is configured for JBOD or RAID. A PCIe HBA can provide SAS/SATA connectivity and JBOD operation, but that does not make every HBA suitable for every PC. Lenovo’s guide, for example, describes one specific external adapter; it is not a compatibility guide or recommendation for an unspecified internal build (Lenovo ThinkSystem 450W-16e HBA product guide).

Also check practical fit: card clearance, airflow, cable reach, drive mounting, power connectors, and heat. A card that fits its slot may still block another expansion card or run too hot in a cramped case. Report any added cooling or mounting hardware as part of the build, not as an invisible extra.

Verify used drives before trusting them

Before putting valuable data on used enterprise hard drives, document the seller, return window, and warranty terms. Save each drive’s SMART data before use, including power-on hours and any exposed error or reallocated-sector indicators. Run the extended self-test or surface test you choose, and, where appropriate, verify a full-capacity write/read workflow. State exactly which checks were performed and their results; none of those checks guarantees future reliability, and the available reliability guidance does not establish a universal pass/fail threshold.

Manufacturer reliability figures describe populations or product specifications, not the remaining life of a particular used unit. Seagate explains that MTBF and AFR are statistical measures, not a promise about when an individual drive will fail (Seagate on HDD reliability, MTBF, and AFR). For comparison, Synology lists up to 2.5 million hours MTBF and a 550 TB/year workload rating for its HAT5300 series; those are manufacturer specifications for that product family, not figures for the drives in this build (Synology HAT5300 series specifications).

Show the full cost before calling it the cheapest

The relevant cost is not just the sticker price of two drives. Add any HBA, cables, mounting hardware, power or cooling changes, and other required components. Then compare the total with alternatives that were actually available in the same region and at the time of purchase. A comparison should use usable capacity and include the same categories of cost.

  • Up-front cost: receipts for both drives and every required component.
  • Cost per usable TB: total cost divided by the capacity the system can actually use, with any formatting or redundancy assumptions made explicit.
  • Protection and recourse: seller return period and remaining warranty, if any.
  • Ownership trade-offs: power use, noise, heat, enclosure needs, compatibility, and setup effort.
  • Data protection: a separate backup plan and the consequences if either drive fails.

Without documented purchase totals and a like-for-like comparison, “cheapest” remains a personal verdict rather than a substantiated cost claim. No purchase price or savings amount is established here.

Keep the data safe after installation

Two drives do not automatically provide redundancy or backup. If they are configured independently, the failure of either can make data on that drive unavailable. If they are combined in RAID, the level and configuration determine what failures may be tolerated; RAID does not protect against accidental deletion, malware, theft, or damage to the PC. Keep a separate backup of files that matter and verify that it can be restored.

What to document in a build report

A useful account of this upgrade should give readers enough information to reproduce the compatibility checks and judge the cost, without implying tests or results that were not recorded. Include:
