Authorities reported finding packaging associated with kratom-related products at both scenes, but officials have not established that either student took the products or that any substance caused either death.
What happened to the two University of Mississippi students?
Hamilton and Strang were found dead in separate incidents on Sept. 21. Early reports citing the university and local authorities said investigators had no evidence the deaths were connected. The university also said it knew of no additional student deaths despite unverified claims circulating on social media. The Associated Press reported on Oct. 2 that whether kratom contributed to either death remained unclear.

What was found at the scenes?
Early accounts described the items as packaged kratom. Later law-enforcement clarification referred to packaging associated with kratom-related products, and federal prosecutors described the items as suspected kratom derivatives. Those descriptions do not establish that either student ingested a product.
The distinction matters: suspected derivatives such as MGPI, MGM-15, and MGM-16 are not interchangeable with ordinary natural kratom leaf. The Justice Department named those compounds among derivatives it described as Schedule I controlled substances. The public accounts do not establish that each named derivative was present at both scenes. The federal charging announcement identifies the substances and allegations in the case.
#1 Best Overall
- High Sensitivity: The test features a low cutoff concentration of 300 ng/mL, ensuring the detection of Mitragynine at very low levels.
- Rapid Results: Delivers accurate, easy-to-read results in just 5 minutes.
- Simple Dip-and-Read Format: The user-friendly dip card design requires no special equipment or training. Simply collect a urine sample, dip the card, and read the results.
- Over 99% Accuracy: When used correctly, this test provides a high level of accuracy, offering a dependable preliminary screening result.
- Clear Result Interpretation: The test features distinct control (C) and test (T) lines for straightforward interpretation. A line in the control region indicates the test worked correctly. The absence of a line in the test region indicates a positive result.
What have investigators and prosecutors said?
On Oct. 1, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi announced that Yahya Mohamed Mosleh and his son, Islam Yahya Mosleh, had been charged with possession with intent to distribute controlled substances in connection with the death investigation. Prosecutors said investigators identified a suspected link between derivative packages and a local vape, tobacco, and beer store; they also reported executing search warrants and seizing suspected controlled substances.
Those statements describe allegations in a criminal complaint, not convictions. A suspected connection between products and a store is not a finding about what either student consumed or what caused either death. Lafayette County Metro Narcotics’ clarification, reported by WMC, said: “That warning was not a declaration that kratom or any specific substance caused either death.”

Did kratom cause the students’ deaths?
No public finding in the cited reporting establishes that kratom, a derivative, or another substance caused either death. Finding product packaging at a scene is not proof of ingestion, and the charges announced by prosecutors do not establish medical causation.
On Sept. 30, Fox News reported that Mississippi Department of Public Safety press secretary Alex Gibert said both toxicology reports had been completed and would be provided to the Lafayette County coroner and the families. That report did not disclose the test results or final causes of death. As of Oct. 3, 2026, the sources cited here do not include a public finding establishing either result. Fox News’ report describes the status it reported.

What did the university confirm?
Shawnboda Mead, the university’s vice chancellor for student affairs, told Mississippi Today: “The Coroner’s Office has confirmed two student deaths, and University Police are not aware of any additional student deaths.” The university’s statement addressed the number of known student deaths; it did not establish a cause. Mississippi Today’s report covered the university response and initial investigation.
