Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Call of Duty: WWII and the base game of Mafia III briefly appeared as free PS4 downloads in some European PlayStation Store regions on 6 October 2026, with no PlayStation Plus subscription reported as necessary. The listings were inconsistent, however, and updated coverage later said they had changed. This was a short-lived store irregularity—not a confirmed Sony giveaway.
Which PS4 games appeared free?
Notebookcheck reported that the standard edition of Call of Duty: WWII and the base game of Mafia III appeared free in some European storefronts. Its reporting described the UK and Poland as having a free listing for Call of Duty: WWII, and the UK as having one for Mafia III. The coverage did not establish that every European country or account could claim either game. Notebookcheck’s 6 October report also noted that the UK listing for Mafia III: Definitive Edition remained paid; it was not the edition reported as free.

What changed in the PlayStation Store listings?
In an update on 6 October, Push Square reported that the UK Mafia III listing had been pulled and that Call of Duty: WWII had returned to a paid price of £54.99. The same coverage earlier reported US prices of $29.99 for Mafia III and $59.99 for Call of Duty: WWII; those are prices reported in that coverage, not confirmed current prices. Push Square’s updated coverage is the latest reported status in this account of the incident.

Did the games require PlayStation Plus?
Both outlets described the listings as claimable without an active PlayStation Plus subscription. That applied to the reported free listings; it does not establish a general entitlement or a continuing offer.
Was this an official Sony giveaway, and are claimed licenses safe?
The reviewed coverage did not include an official Sony explanation confirming a promotion. Reports raised the possibility of a pricing error and described a checkout message reading “Pricing: SKU is invalid,” but that message was reported by a user and does not establish the cause.

It is also unknown whether Sony will honor licenses claimed while the listings appeared free. No reviewed source confirms that those licenses will remain accessible, and none establishes whether claiming them could affect an account. A reader discussion raised concerns about bans, but it is not an official answer from Sony. The discussion should be treated as user reports, not a guarantee of safety or continued access.
What should players do if they still want the games?
Check the PlayStation Store while signed in to the account and region you use, and confirm the edition and price shown before completing a transaction. Do not assume a listing seen in another country—or an earlier report—will be available to your account. If the digital listing is no longer available, a physical PS4 disc is a separate paid option for Call of Duty: WWII; availability and price depend on the seller.
