Two people were fatally shot Friday morning, October 2, 2026, at a residence at 499 Panoramic Way in Oakland, near UC Berkeley. Oakland police are leading the investigation. Police had not established what led to the shooting, and UC Berkeley police said there were no known or ongoing threats to campus in statements reported that day.
What happened on Panoramic Way?
A neighbor called police after hearing gunshots. Responders found two people outside the residence, and a firearm was recovered at the scene, according to reporting by SFGATE. The victims were identified as a 63-year-old woman and a man. Reports differed on the man’s age: SFGATE reported 64, while Bay City News reports published by SFGATE and Local News Matters reported 61. His age had not been consistently established in those accounts.

The address is in the Oakland Hills near the Oakland-Berkeley border, above the UC Berkeley campus. Berkeley police began receiving reports of possible gunfire at 10:48 a.m., according to SFGATE. Although Berkeley and Oakland responders were involved, Oakland Police Department took the lead because the address is within Oakland’s jurisdiction.
What have investigators established?
Police had not determined the circumstances or motive. Assistant Police Chief Casey Johnson said investigators were not ruling out possibilities, but that the cause was unknown at the time. As SFGATE reported his statement: “We are investigating this. We are not going to rule anything out, but it is unknown at this time.” Johnson also said the victims appeared to have been married.

Is there an ongoing threat to UC Berkeley or the public?
UC Berkeley police said: “There are no known or ongoing threats to the campus.” Johnson also said there was no threat to the public, according to SFGATE.
