The Draconids peak on the evening of October 8, 2026, while the Orionids peak overnight October 21–22. The Draconids are the easier early-evening outing and face little moonlight interference; for the Orionids, wait until after the Moon sets—around 3 a.m. local time as a broad guide—then watch before dawn. Both showers are best seen with unaided eyes from a dark spot with a wide, unobstructed view.
When to watch the October 2026 meteor showers
| Meteor shower | Peak | Best time to look | Moonlight | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Draconids | Evening of October 8 into early October 9. NASA says the peak begins around 9 p.m. EDT on October 8. | Try after it gets dark on October 8; the early-evening timing makes this the more convenient shower. | Little interference is expected near the nearly new Moon. | NASA describes a modest shower that may produce a few meteors per hour. |
| Orionids | Night of October 21 into October 22. | Look after midnight, with the better opportunity in the few hours before dawn after moonset. NASA gives about 3 a.m. local time as a broad moonset guide; the exact time depends on location. | The waxing gibbous Moon is 74% illuminated, according to the American Meteor Society, and will obscure fainter meteors while above the horizon. | The American Meteor Society gives 10–20 shower members per hour at maximum in a normal year under dark-sky conditions. NASA estimates about 3–6 per hour in suburban areas with ambient light, with a few more possible from darker sites. |
Hourly rates are estimates, not a count you can expect to see. Your view depends on darkness, clouds, how much of the sky is visible, and the Moon’s position. The Orionid figures describe different viewing conditions, so they should not be treated as conflicting promises.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to get the best view
- Choose a dark, open location. Get away from streetlights and other bright sources if you can, and find a spot where buildings, trees, or hills block as little sky as possible. Check local cloud cover and the Orionid moonset time close to your observing night.
- Give your eyes time to adjust. Avoid bright lights while you wait. NASA says dark adaptation begins in less than 30 minutes, though the time needed varies.
- Look broadly, not just at the radiant. Meteors can streak across a wide area of sky. Orionids appear to radiate from Orion, but you do not need to stare at the constellation itself.
- Get comfortable and be patient. A reclining chair, sleeping bag, or blanket can make a long wait easier, but none is required. Comfort gear does not make meteors brighter or more frequent.
For Orionids: where to face
NASA’s general guidance is to lie back with your feet toward the southeast in the Northern Hemisphere or toward the northeast in the Southern Hemisphere, then look up at a broad swath of sky. Orionids are visible in both hemispheres after midnight.

Do you need a telescope?
No. Meteors move across the sky too quickly for a telescope to be useful for casual viewing; your unaided eyes give you the broad field of view you want. Binoculars and a camera are not needed either. A dark location, an open view, and patience matter more than equipment.
Why the Orionids are associated with Halley’s Comet
The Orionids occur when Earth passes through debris left by comet 1P/Halley. NASA gives their entry speed as about 41 miles (66 kilometers) per second. Some meteors can leave glowing trains in their wake, but the shower’s actual display varies from night to night.

Can you see them from your location?
The showers can be watched from places with clear skies and a view of the sky; the Orionids are visible in both hemispheres after midnight. Local conditions still matter: clouds, light pollution, obstructions, and—on the Orionid peak night—the time the Moon sets all affect what you can see. Because moonset varies by location, check a local sky calendar for the precise time rather than relying on the approximate 3 a.m. guidance.
