Bulgarian authorities are investigating an alleged arson attack in which two masked men reportedly set fire to 11 of 17 antennas at a communications facility in the Sofia area. The antennas connected to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network. Officials say suspects have been identified, but they have not named them or disclosed who ordered the attack.

What happened at the Bulgarian Starlink site?

According to Bulgarian reports, two masked men entered or reached a communications facility near Sofia and deliberately set fire to 11 of its 17 Starlink antennas. The reported count comes from the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), while Bulgarian National Television (BNT) also described the incident as a targeted attack.

The facility’s exact address, owner and operating company have not been publicly identified in the reports available for this account. The antennas were used to connect with Starlink satellites, but no published source establishes what specific customers or services depended on that connection.

When did officials disclose the investigation?

October 12: allegation becomes public

Opposition member of parliament Ivaylo Mirchev publicized the alleged arson on October 12, 2026. BNT reported his view that the antennas were deliberately targeted because they provide a main connection to satellites. That statement is a political figure’s public allegation, not a completed investigative finding.

October 14: the prime minister describes an active probe

On October 14, ANSA/AFP reported Prime Minister Rumen Radev discussing the investigation. He said it was being pursued intensively with partner services and that a result was expected soon. He also warned that premature disclosure could hinder the investigation.

October 15: authorities say suspects were identified

BTA reported on October 15 that acting Interior Ministry Secretary General Lyubomir Nikolov said suspects had been identified. Nikolov withheld further details, saying disclosure could jeopardize the investigation. Identification does not mean that charges, arrests or a court finding have been publicly announced.

Who burned the antennas?

The public record does not yet name the two men. Bulgarian officials have said suspects were identified, but they have not released their identities, evidence or an explanation of how investigators reached that conclusion. Until prosecutors or police publish a formal account, the attackers should be described as alleged perpetrators.

No searched source establishes who ordered the act, whether the men acted alone, or whether the incident was part of a wider campaign against satellite communications. There is also no public evidence in the available reporting that links the attack to Russia or to any other state.

Were the antennas being used by Ukraine?

That has not been established. The reports confirm that the equipment connected to Starlink satellites, but they do not identify the facility’s customers, mission or data traffic. No published source in this account says the site supported Ukrainian military operations, civilian relief work or any other Ukraine-related activity.

Starlink terminals can serve many civilian, commercial and government purposes. The presence of Starlink equipment alone is therefore not evidence of a Ukrainian connection.

What security response has Bulgaria announced?

BTA reported that Interior Ministry units had taken additional security measures at similar sites. The ministry also indicated that responsibility for protecting these facilities rests with their owners. The reports do not specify whether the measures include permanent guards, surveillance upgrades, access controls or other technology.

Authorities have not published a repair timetable, outage duration, casualty figure or repair cost. The number of antennas damaged is reported as 11 out of 17; investigators have not publicly described the condition of the remaining six or the facility’s operating capacity after the fire.

What remains unknown?

  • The exact Sofia-area location and the facility owner or operator.
  • The identities of the suspects and whether anyone has been arrested or charged.
  • The motive, organizer and any connection to a foreign government or intelligence service.
  • Whether the antennas carried traffic for Ukraine or for Bulgarian, commercial or other users.
  • How long service was disrupted and when all damaged equipment will be restored.
  • The financial cost and the technical cause of the fire.

How this account should be read

The strongest confirmed point is the official statement that suspects had been identified by October 15, 2026, combined with Bulgarian reporting that 11 of 17 antennas were burned at a Sofia-area communications facility. The descriptions of deliberate targeting come from the circumstances reported by BTA and BNT and from Mirchev’s public comments; a full evidentiary account has not been released.

As the investigation develops, reliable updates should distinguish between police or prosecutorial findings and political commentary. Until officials publish attribution and evidence, claims about a Russian operation, Ukrainian military use or a coordinated regional campaign remain unproven.
