Two giant Australian stick insects have been formally recognized as species new to science, not because they suddenly appeared, but because a taxonomic revision found that insects previously grouped under two species actually represent five. The revision names Anchiale robusta and Anchiale mabiensis as new species and restores Anchiale albopunctata from synonymy.
What “hiding in plain sight” means
The insects were not literally invisible or necessarily unknown to people. “New” refers to their formal scientific description and recognition. Researchers re-examined Australian stick insects in the genus Anchiale and concluded that specimens once treated as two species belonged to five distinct recognized species. The taxonomic paper was published online on 21 September 2026. The University of Sydney’s account of the revision describes the broader effort behind the work.

Which five species does the revision recognize?
The revision recognizes five Australian Anchiale species. Their reported ranges distinguish several Queensland species from the species recorded in New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

“Reinstated from synonymy” means A. albopunctata, previously treated as the same species as another name, is again accepted as a distinct species in this revision. The paper’s abstract and taxonomic treatment give the species list and distributions. Read the taxonomic paper in Zootaxa.

How researchers separated the species
The revision brings together evidence rather than relying on a single visible feature. Researchers examined morphology and specimens, including where specimens were collected, and used phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial COXI DNA. The paper reports COXI analyses for all species except A. spinicollis; it would therefore be inaccurate to say that genetic testing covered every species.
- Morphology: Physical differences help distinguish species, and the paper also considers egg features.
- Locality and range: Specimen collection records help establish where each species is known to occur.
- Genetic evidence: The mitochondrial COXI analysis provides an additional line of evidence for the species relationships, with A. spinicollis not included in the reported COXI coverage.
The University of Sydney says the work drew on museum specimens, surveys, captive populations and community observations. Its 2026 release reports more than 1,000 observations through iNaturalist and the Atlas of Living Australia; that is the university’s reported count, not an independently verified total. A large number of observations can document an insect without resolving which species it represents.

Why Anchiale mabiensis stands out
A. mabiensis is associated with Mabi rainforest on Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands. The University of Sydney identifies Mabi rainforest as a critically endangered ecological community. The species also has an unusual lid-like structure on its egg, an example of how reproductive features can contribute to describing and distinguishing stick insects.

The association with Mabi rainforest makes the species notable in a conservation context, but it does not by itself establish the species’ population size, conservation status or degree of dependence on that habitat.

What the revision could mean for outbreaks
A stick insect known for foliage-damaging, plague-like outbreaks was found to comprise multiple species. Separating those species could help researchers and land managers understand which insects are involved in particular outbreaks and improve future management of forestry and agricultural impacts. That is a potential benefit of clearer identification—not evidence that A. mabiensis or either newly described species is currently responsible for a particular outbreak.

The University of Sydney says a likely additional undescribed species may occur on Cape York, but more specimens are needed to confirm it. It is not one of the five species recognized in the revision and should not be treated as formally described.
