WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft are open-source Rust applications designed as desktop-style substitutes for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Tiny Little Office is a no-login browser suite built around documents shared as links rather than synchronized cloud files. The desktop apps offer familiar formats and workflows but remain early alpha software; the browser suite is deliberately smaller, more private and less collaborative.
What launched, and how the projects differ
TechSpot reported on 13 October 2026 that developer Brandon Thomas released WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft under MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses. They are free, open-source programs built with Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5, and target conventional Office workflows on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD. WordCraft can also run in a browser through WebAssembly.

TechRadar reported on 16 October 2026 that veteran developer Paul Ford released Tiny Little Office, a browser-only collection of ten small tools. It requires no account and no cloud service. Its core idea is that “the link is the document”: the document’s state is encoded in a URL that can be copied or shared.

WordCraft for documents
WordCraft reads and writes DOCX, supports ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown and plain text, imports legacy DOC files, and exports PDFs with selectable text, links and bookmarks. Its planned or implemented Office-like surface includes a ribbon, styles, tables, track changes, references and mail merge.
#1 Best Overall
- Classic Office Apps | Includes classic desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with ease.
- Install on a Single Device | Install classic desktop Office Apps for use on a single Windows laptop, Windows desktop, MacBook, or iMac.
- Ideal for One Person | With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- Consider Upgrading to Microsoft 365 | Get premium benefits with a Microsoft 365 subscription, including ongoing updates, advanced security, and access to premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and more, plus 1TB cloud storage per person and multi-device support for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.
TechSpot reported an estimate of 88% of Word’s ribbon-based commands and approximately 60% overall feature parity for the project. Those are project estimates, not independent compatibility tests. Alpha status means a document that opens correctly today may still expose formatting or stability problems in another file or release.
GridCraft for spreadsheets
GridCraft uses XLSX as its native format and is designed to be scriptable by AI agents. Thomas’s project reports that about 89% of Excel ribbon and menu commands and about 98% of worksheet functions are implemented. These figures are developer-reported and have not been independently benchmarked.
Rank #2
- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
The project describes GridCraft as roughly 50% ready for real work. That makes it potentially useful for experimentation or non-critical spreadsheets, but not a reason to discard backups of financial, operational or research work.
DeckCraft for presentations
DeckCraft opens and saves PPTX files and exports PDF. Its GitHub project claims 79% feature parity across 191 PowerPoint features, while the overall project description places it at about 55% ready for real work. The 79% figure is a project claim rather than a standardized test result, so complex themes, animations, embedded objects and unusual layouts should be checked after conversion.

What the percentages mean in practice
Command and function counts show how much of an interface has been attempted; they do not prove that every file format, edge case or workflow behaves like Office. The three programs are best treated as active alpha projects. Keep original files, test copies of important documents and expect unfinished features, regressions or periods without maintenance.

How link documents work
Changes are encoded into the URL. Sharing that URL gives another person an exact copy at that point in time. The recipient can edit their copy, but those edits remain local and do not synchronize back to the sender. Links can be password-protected, made read-only or set to expire after periods ranging from one hour to one month.

A user can instead configure the suite to wipe its local data when the page is closed. This design keeps the service from holding a central copy, but it also makes the link itself important: losing a link can mean losing access to that shared state unless another local copy exists.

Explicit trade-offs
Ford says, “There are lots of tradeoffs,” and that the project is “not, in any way, how web apps are expected to work.” Long URLs can be awkward in chat, video and image uploads are not supported, and there is no live synchronized editing. Ford characterizes the collaboration model as “collaborative like handing out zines at a street fair,” rather than like a shared online document.
The code is open source and supports LLM agents. TechRadar says the documentation indicates Claude Code performed at least some of the work, although the precise proportion of AI-generated code is not established.

| Category | WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft | Tiny Little Office |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Native Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD apps; WordCraft also runs through WebAssembly | Browser-based |
| File model | DOCX/ODT/RTF and other document formats; XLSX; PPTX and PDF export, depending on app | Documents encoded in shareable URLs and stored locally in the browser |
| Collaboration | Conventional file sharing; synchronized collaboration is not established | Share a snapshot by URL; recipients edit local copies with no sync-back |
| Privacy and storage | Local desktop software; each app’s storage behavior should be checked in its own build | No login or cloud access; optional local persistence or wipe-on-close |
| Scope | Office-style word processing, spreadsheets and presentations | Ten small productivity tools, including drawing, diagrams, animation, calendar and trip planning |
| Maturity | Early alpha; project estimates range from about 50% to 60% readiness, with feature-specific claims above | Intentionally lightweight, with documented limits on media and collaboration |
| Best fit | People who need familiar desktop workflows and standard Office file formats | People who value no-account use, local control and simple link sharing over full Office compatibility |
Which alternative should you try?
Choose the desktop projects when compatibility is the priority
- You need to open or save DOCX, XLSX or PPTX files.
- You prefer installed software that works across major desktop operating systems.
- You are willing to test alpha software and keep independent backups.
Choose Tiny Little Office when simplicity and privacy matter most
- You want to work without an account or cloud storage.
- You need to send a self-contained snapshot rather than maintain a live shared document.
- Your work does not depend on uploaded video, images or synchronized editing.
Practical precautions before relying on either project
- Keep the original file before opening or converting it.
- Test a copy containing the formatting, formulas, fonts, media and comments your real work uses.
- For the desktop apps, verify the saved DOCX, XLSX or PPTX in the software used by the recipient.
- For Tiny Little Office, save important links somewhere secure and export or copy critical content before closing the browser.
- Do not make an alpha application or a one-link local workflow the only copy of deadline-critical work.
Why these releases matter
Thomas’s projects attempt a broad, conventional replacement for the major Office applications, while Ford’s suite questions the assumption that productivity software needs accounts, servers and real-time collaboration. The first approach offers more familiar file handling but carries alpha-stage compatibility risk. The second minimizes infrastructure and tracking at the cost of long links, missing media support and no synchronized editing.

Thomas has explained his motivation bluntly, saying, “I hate LibreOffice so bad. It once killed a 40-page essay I wrote the week it was due, during finals.” He has also written of other established creative software, “GIMP sucks,” followed by, “It has always sucked. There is no reason to save broken software.” Those comments explain the projects’ frustration-driven origins, but they do not change the need to evaluate the released builds on your own files.
