The Tool Desk

It does not establish a reliable list of four tools or prove that all four are 20 years old, so this article tests the headline instead of repeating it.
Neither utility replaces Windows 11. Each addresses a narrower task with a workflow that can feel more direct than a general-purpose system feature.

What the headline gets right—and what it overstates
Windows 11 already includes search and storage-management features. Microsoft documents Windows Search as a service that can return results from the device, cloud locations and the web, with controls for which locations are indexed. That makes “Windows 11 can’t find files” too broad to be accurate.

The useful comparison is narrower: how quickly can you locate a filename, and how clearly can you see which folders or files consume disk space? Everything and WinDirStat are built around those individual jobs. They are not substitutes for one another, and neither proves that Windows 11 lacks a built-in way to perform every related operation.

- INCREASE THE SPEED AND PERFORMANCE OF YOUR DEVICES Bloatware and needless applications running in the background can slow down your devices. Keep them running at their best by reducing background app activity, uninstalling apps you no longer need, and fixing common problems.
- KEEP YOUR DEVICES HEALTHY AND PERFORMING AT THEIR BEST Devices lose performance over time unless they’re maintained. Automated cleaning and optimization tasks help keep them running at peak efficiency, healthy, and performing better for longer.
- KEEP YOUR ONLINE ACTIVITY TO YOURSELF Increase your online privacy by removing your browsing and download history, tracking cookies, and other web browsing data.
The “four” and “20-year-old” parts of the title also need qualification. Current primary documentation clearly supports Everything and WinDirStat, but it does not establish four specific utilities or verified original release dates for a four-tool list. The defensible conclusion is therefore about two documented utilities and their focused workflows, not an unverified anniversary claim.
At a glance: the two documented utilities
| Utility | Focused job | Windows counterpart to compare | What it searches or displays | Setup and editions documented | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Everything | Filename search | Windows Search | Rapidly indexed filenames; content searches are possible but use non-indexed, slower scanning | Installer or portable package; Windows 11 support is stated | It is not a fast full-content indexer |
| WinDirStat | Disk-usage analysis | Windows storage-management workflows | Interactive treemap and large-file discovery | Download page lists x64, x86 and ARM64 installers plus portable ZIP and 7z archives; version 2.5.0 is listed | It analyzes usage; it does not decide which files are safe to delete |
Everything: a filename search engine for Windows
Everything is designed around one question: “Where is the file with this name?” Its documentation describes quick indexing and instant filename search, and its FAQ states that it runs on Windows 11. The focused index is what separates this workflow from a broad search that may include device, cloud and web results.
When Everything is the better fit
- You know all or part of a filename and want matching paths rather than a web or cloud result.
- You need a dedicated window whose primary purpose is filename lookup.
- You want to carry a portable build instead of running an installer; the official installation guidance documents both forms.
These are workflow advantages, not proof that Windows Search is incapable. Windows Search can search the device, and Microsoft documents configurable indexed locations. The choice is whether a specialized filename index is more convenient for your task.

How to use it
- Choose the official installer or portable package. The installation documentation lists both options, so select the format that matches your permissions and deployment needs.
- Open the program and enter the known filename, partial name or extension in its search interface.
- Use the returned paths to identify the file you need. Because the utility is centered on filenames, keep the query focused on names and locations rather than expecting an instant content search.
- If a name search is insufficient, switch to a content-search operation only when necessary and allow for a longer wait.
The first three steps use the utility for its documented strength: indexed filename lookup. The fourth is a fallback, not an equivalent mode.
Content search is a different operation
Everything’s FAQ says content searches are possible, but content is not indexed and the operation can be slow. That distinction matters when comparing it with Windows Search. A filename index can return matches quickly while a content query may need to inspect file data. Do not describe Everything as an all-purpose instant document-search engine.
Requirements and compatibility
The documentation and FAQ identify Windows 11 support and provide installer and portable choices. The material supplied here does not state a minimum Windows build, hardware requirement, indexing time, or benchmark result, so those figures should not be inferred. Windows Search remains the relevant built-in comparison when you need device, cloud or web coverage, or when you depend on Windows’ configurable indexed locations.

WinDirStat: see where the disk space went
WinDirStat approaches a different problem: not finding one named file, but understanding storage consumption. Project materials describe it as a Windows disk-usage analyzer with an interactive treemap and tools for discovering large files. The visual map lets you connect a block of disk usage with the folders and files that produced it.

- A drive is filling up and you need to identify the largest folders or files.
- A text list is not enough and a visual representation will help you spot dominant directories.
- You want to inspect usage across a selected location rather than search for a known filename.
WinDirStat and Everything should not be ranked as alternatives. Everything answers “which path matches this name?” WinDirStat answers “which paths account for the space?” A person cleaning a full drive may use both, but for different stages of the investigation.
Download choices and architecture
The current download page lists version 2.5.0 and offers installers for x64, x86 and ARM64 systems. It also provides portable ZIP and 7z archives. The project is identified as GPLv2 open source. Select the architecture that matches Windows on the target machine; choose a portable archive when you need an unpack-and-run deployment or do not want a traditional installation.

- Protection against viruses, malware, and ransomware — restore your backup and keep working
- License for 2 PCs, lifetime validity — no subscription

A practical disk-usage workflow
- Download the installer or portable archive that matches your Windows architecture.
- Launch WinDirStat and select the drive or folder you need to examine.
- Let the analysis complete, then use the treemap to locate large visual regions and the accompanying file or folder information to identify their paths.
- Use the large-file discovery features to make a shortlist of candidates for review.
- Verify each candidate in File Explorer or the application that owns it before moving or deleting anything. A large file can be a required program, a project, a backup or a system component.
The utility supplies evidence about space usage; the decision to remove data remains yours. Treat the treemap as a diagnostic map, not an automatic cleanup command.
What is and is not established about Windows 11 disk tools
The available project material establishes WinDirStat’s treemap and large-file features and Windows 11 compatibility. It does not provide a like-for-like measurement against a particular Windows 11 storage screen, nor does it prove that Windows 11 has no disk-space tools. A precise claim is that WinDirStat offers a dedicated visualization and discovery workflow; whether that is preferable depends on how you want to inspect storage.

Windows Search versus Everything: compare the task, not the slogan
| Question | Everything | Windows Search |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | Filename search | Device, cloud and web results |
| Indexing detail | Quick filename indexing; content is not indexed for its slower content-search mode | Indexed locations can be configured according to Microsoft’s documentation |
| Best reason to choose it | A dedicated filename-focused workflow | Integrated Windows results across broader sources |
| Content searching | Possible, but potentially slow because content is not indexed | Depends on indexed locations and Windows Search configuration |
| Windows 11 status | FAQ states Windows 11 support | Built into Windows 11 |
If the requirement is a known filename, Everything’s specialization may reduce the amount of unrelated result handling. If the requirement spans cloud data, web results or Windows-managed indexed locations, Windows Search may be the more appropriate first stop. Calling either one universally superior would ignore the task difference.

Windows-version checks matter more than a “20-year-old” label
Windows features change by release. Microsoft’s removed-features reference says WMIC was removed from Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. Microsoft also warns that applications or code depending on removed features may stop working in releases where those features are gone.
That is a reason to check a utility’s documented compatibility and dependencies against the Windows version you actually run. It is not evidence that Everything or WinDirStat depends on WMIC. No such dependency is established here. The practical lesson is to verify the release number, architecture and current documentation before deploying legacy software broadly.
Checklist before installing either utility
- Confirm whether the target machine is x64, x86 or ARM64 when selecting a WinDirStat installer.
- Decide whether an installer or portable package better fits your permissions and support model.
- Check that the utility’s documented Windows 11 support matches your release.
- Keep filename search and content search separate in your expectations.
- For disk analysis, review large-file findings before taking any cleanup action.
- Do not assume a removed Windows component such as WMIC is involved unless the utility’s own documentation says so.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Everything when the problem is a name
Use Everything when you can describe the file by name, partial name or extension and want a focused path search. Its quick filename indexing, Windows 11 support and installer/portable options make it a practical specialist tool. Switch expectations when you move to content searching: the FAQ explicitly says that mode is slower because content is not indexed.
Choose WinDirStat when the problem is space
Use WinDirStat when you need to explain disk consumption, inspect a drive visually or find unusually large files. The treemap and large-file features are the reason to install it; the architecture-specific installers and portable archives provide deployment flexibility.
Use both for a storage investigation
A sensible sequence is to map a crowded drive in WinDirStat, identify a suspicious directory, and then use Everything when you need to locate files by a particular name elsewhere. That combines two distinct views without pretending either utility replaces the other.
Bottom line
Everything and WinDirStat remain useful because they narrow the problem. Everything specializes in indexed filename search, while WinDirStat specializes in visual disk-usage analysis and large-file discovery. Windows 11 can perform related tasks through Windows Search and its configurable indexing, so the accurate claim is not that Windows 11 “can’t” do them at all. It is that focused utilities can provide a more direct workflow for particular jobs. The available documentation does not substantiate four named utilities or a verified 20-year history, so those parts of the original headline should not be presented as established fact.
