The title describes three personal audio-pipeline mix-ups, but the available facts do not establish what happened in those incidents. Rather than invent a first-person account, this article explains one documented source of confusion: in Cubase, an event’s visible name and the audio clip it refers to are related but distinct. That distinction can help diagnose a naming mix-up, but it does not establish the cause of any particular incident.
Why can two audio events have the same name?
A name displayed on an audio event does not necessarily identify a unique audio file or an independently copied piece of audio. In Cubase, an event displays its clip name by default, but a separate descriptive name can also be entered in the event’s Description field on the Info Line. The label you see may therefore be the clip name or an event-specific description. Steinberg’s Cubase Operation Manual: Renaming events.

Are duplicate audio events using the same clip?
In Cubase Pro 15, duplicating an audio event does not by itself create an independent audio clip. Steinberg’s help states: “If you duplicate audio events, the copies always refer to the same audio clip.” In other words, the project can contain separate event instances that point to the same clip. That fact alone does not prove anything about a different DAW or a mix-up in another stage of an audio pipeline. Steinberg’s Cubase Pro 15 help: Duplicating Events.
How can I tell an event name from an audio clip name?
In Cubase Pro 15, the “Append Clip Name to Event Name” audio-event display preference appends the clip name in brackets to the displayed event name. This can make the relationship between an event label and its clip easier to see in the project. It is a display aid, not proof that the displayed clip is independent, nor a universal remedy for naming differences between applications. Steinberg’s Cubase Pro 15 help: Event Display — Audio.

How do I make a Cubase audio copy independent?
Cubase Pro 15 distinguishes shared copies from real copies. A shared copy remains linked for editing; converting a shared copy to a real copy creates a new clip version that can be edited independently. That is different from simply duplicating an event, which continues to refer to the same clip. Steinberg’s Cubase Pro 15 help: Shared Copies.
What details establish what happened in a particular pipeline?
The Cubase documentation explains these Cubase behaviors, but it does not identify the application, project stages, labels, actions, or outcomes behind the three incidents named in the title. To explain those incidents accurately, each needs its own account of the application and version, the pipeline stage, the exact event and clip labels, the operation performed, the expected and observed result, the check that distinguished a label from shared audio, and the resolution. The causes should remain separate unless the incidents show they were the same.
