The timing and similar damage are striking, but reporting has not established a shared cause.
What happened in the two Chicago crashes?
| Incident | Location and date | What was reported | Response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serve Robotics | CTA shelter at Grand and Racine in West Town, Sunday, March 22, 2026 | ABC7 reported that surveillance video showed the robot maneuvering on the sidewalk before it struck the shelter glass. The glass shattered, and the robot remained at the scene. The footage description does not explain why the collision occurred. ABC7 | Serve said no injuries were reported, its team responded quickly to clean up, and it was reviewing the incident. Chicago officials told ABC7 that Serve was working with shelter maintainer JCDecaux and would cover repair costs. ABC7 UPI |
| Coco Robotics | CTA shelter near North Avenue and Larrabee in Old Town, Tuesday, March 24, 2026 | A Coco robot hit the shelter, damaging its glass. Local reporting | Coco vice president Carl Hansen said the company would cover repairs, according to UPI. UPI |
The accounts identify different operators and neighborhoods, with the collisions reported two days apart. They do not establish a cause for either impact or show that the incidents were connected.

Why does the timing seem so strange?
Two similar shelter collisions by competing delivery-robot operators, reported within days of each other, make an unusual pair of incidents. That is the basis for calling the timing weird—not evidence that the robots shared a defect or that shelter crashes are common.

The incidents also landed amid public debate about Chicago’s Personal Delivery Device pilot. The program was established by the City Council in 2022, according to local reporting. On March 26, 2026, UPI reported that a petition calling for an end to the pilot had gathered more than 3,700 signatures. UPI

What the incidents do—and don’t—say about robot safety
Serve’s reported operating scale provides context, but it cannot be used to calculate a safety rate. Axios reported in September 2026 that a Serve spokesperson said the company served more than 670 Chicago restaurants and had completed more than 27,000 deliveries. Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited counts; the report does not provide a corresponding incident total or a defined measurement period for a risk calculation. Axios

Two reported collisions are not enough to establish a citywide trend or an incident rate. The available accounts describe the impacts and company responses, but do not identify a confirmed technical failure, a common cause, or a comparative failure mode for the two robots.
In September 2026, Axios quoted Ald. Bill Conway describing feedback from residents in Chicago’s 34th Ward: “We are in the process of collecting constituent feedback on delivery robots in the 34th Ward and encourage residents to share their experience with our team. So far, we’ve received very few complaints.” That statement concerns feedback in one ward; it should not be read as a measure of citywide opinion. Axios
