Twitter’s “Unmention” is now presented in X as Leave this conversation. Use it from a post or thread menu to remove your handle link from that conversation, stop notifications from it, and prevent further mentions there. The thread is not deleted and remains viewable. X says the action cannot currently be undone.
What Unmention does on X
Unmention is a conversation-level control, not an account-wide block or mute. After you confirm Leave this conversation:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your username or handle link is hidden from the conversation.
- People cannot mention you again in that conversation.
- You stop receiving notifications about the conversation.
- You can still open and read the thread.
- X currently says leaving cannot be undone.
Leaving does not delete your posts or remove the conversation for other participants. The feature is listed for X on iOS, Android and X.com; X Help says it is not available on X Pro. These instructions and availability reflect X Help accessed September 28, 2026: How to post X replies and mentions.
How to untag yourself from a conversation
From Notifications
- Open X and go to Notifications.
- Select the Mentions tab.
- Find the post connected to the unwanted conversation.
- Open that post’s More menu.
- Choose Leave this conversation, then confirm.
From the thread itself
- Open the conversation thread.
- Open the menu at the top of the thread.
- Select Leave this conversation.
- Confirm that you want to leave.
If the option is missing, check that you are using X on iOS, Android or X.com rather than X Pro, and that you opened the thread or a mention associated with it. Menu labels can change as X updates its interface.

Unmention, mute, block and notification filters compared
Choose the control based on the scope of the problem. X documents muting, blocking and broader notification tools separately from leaving a conversation.
| Control | Scope | Handle link in the thread | Can people mention you again in that thread? | Notification effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leave this conversation (Unmention) | One conversation | Hidden | No | Stops notifications about that conversation |
| Mute conversation | One conversation | Not removed by the mute | Not prevented by the mute | Suppresses related notifications, but does not detach your identity from the thread |
| Block an account | A specific account | Not a conversation-level removal | Addresses interaction with the blocked account, not just one thread | Account-level interaction is restricted; use blocking for a broader safety or contact problem |
| Quality filters, muted words and advanced filters | A category of notifications or content | Not changed | Not changed in a particular conversation | Adjusts what reaches your Notifications timeline |
X notes that muting an account does not stop notifications when that account mentions you. For the documented differences between these controls, see Customizing your X experience and X Notifications timeline and quality filters.

Why it is called “Unmention”
X’s 2022 product story introduced the feature under the name Unmention, while the menu used the wording Leave this Conversation. The story described an initial web rollout followed by availability for everyone, including mobile. That history explains the name; current steps and platform availability come from X Help. Read the original rollout account at X’s “Don’t @ me: Protecting your peace with ‘Unmention’”.
