Use a 1500 × 500 pixel image for your X (formerly Twitter) header. That 3:1 canvas is X’s recommended size. It is not a guarantee that every device will show the complete artwork: X says display differences can crop as much as 60 pixels from both the top and bottom. Keep logos, faces and essential text in the central area, export in a supported format, upload it from your profile editor, and click Apply or Save.
Recommended Twitter (X) header dimensions
X Help Center guidance recommends a header image of 1500 × 500 pixels. The same image is often called a banner, header photo or cover image. Starting at the recommended dimensions gives X enough resolution for large displays while preserving the intended 3:1 proportion.
The recommendation describes the source canvas, not a fixed viewing window. X explains that images can display differently across monitor sizes and browsers. Its troubleshooting guidance says 60 pixels at the top and 60 pixels at the bottom could be cropped. Treat those edges as expendable when designing.
| Item | What X states | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas | 1500 × 500 pixels | Create or resize the original artwork to this exact 3:1 ratio. |
| Possible crop | Up to 60 pixels from the top and bottom | Keep critical content away from both horizontal edges. |
| Formats | JPG, GIF and PNG | Use a static JPG or PNG for most photographic or graphic headers. |
| Animated GIF | Not supported for profile or header images | Export a non-animated still image instead. |
| 2 MB figure | Shown in profile-photo upload instructions | Do not treat it as a confirmed header-specific limit; reduce the file if upload validation rejects it. |
Design a header that survives cropping
Build a safe zone
On a 1500 × 500 canvas, reserve the upper and lower 60-pixel bands for background texture, sky, a gradient or other nonessential detail. Put the headline, URL, product name, face and logo inside the remaining central band. A useful working area is approximately 1500 × 380 pixels, centered vertically.

Profile elements and interface controls can cover parts of the header, and browser widths change the visible crop. Keep text short, use strong contrast, and leave breathing room around symbols and faces.
#1 Best Overall
Choose the source image and typography
- Use a sharp source at least as large as the 1500 × 500 canvas; enlarging a small image can make type and faces soft.
- Prefer one clear focal point rather than several small details that disappear on narrow screens.
- Check text at a reduced preview size. If it cannot be read as a small thumbnail, it is unlikely to work in the profile header.
- Keep important text away from the top and bottom crop zones and from the profile-avatar area.
- Use a background and foreground color combination with sufficient contrast. Do not rely on color alone to communicate a message.
Preview more than one viewport
X attributes cropping to monitor and browser differences. Preview the finished file in a wide desktop window and a narrow browser or official mobile app before publishing. This is a practical check, not a promise that every possible display will match your previews. If an edge is important in one view, move it toward the center.
File format, quality and size
JPG
JPG is usually efficient for photographs and gradients. Export at a quality setting that preserves text edges and avoids visible block artifacts. If the file is rejected, reduce quality modestly or resize only after confirming that the dimensions remain 1500 × 500.
PNG
PNG is useful for logos, flat colors, line art and transparency in your source workflow. A photographic PNG can be much larger than a JPG, so check the resulting file size before upload.
Rank #2
GIF
X lists GIF as a supported format but specifically says animated GIFs are not supported for profile or header images. Use a single-frame, non-animated export if you choose GIF at all.
What the 2 MB guidance means
X’s troubleshooting page gives a 2 MB maximum in its profile-photo upload instructions. The cited guidance does not clearly restate that number as a separate header-image limit. Therefore, do not describe 2 MB as a confirmed header cap. Nevertheless, a smaller file generally uploads more reliably: remove unnecessary metadata, use an efficient JPG for photos, or optimize the PNG without changing the canvas.
How to upload a Twitter header image
- Sign in to X.com or open an official X app.
- Open your profile and choose Edit profile.
- Select the camera control on the header/banner area.
- Choose the 1500 × 500 JPG, PNG or non-animated GIF from your device.
- Use the positioning or crop controls to keep the subject inside the central safe area.
- Click Apply, then click Save if the interface presents a separate save action.
- Reload the profile and inspect it at more than one window width. If the change is absent, repeat the final Apply/Save step; X’s troubleshooting instructions warn that the image will not save until you apply it.
Troubleshooting failed uploads and unexpected crops
The upload control rejects the file
- Confirm the file is JPG, PNG or GIF and that it is not animated.
- Check that the image is 1500 × 500 pixels, not a similarly named 1500 × 1500 avatar file.
- Export a smaller JPG or optimized PNG. The 2 MB number belongs to profile-photo instructions, but reducing a large file can resolve validation or transfer failures.
- Try X.com or an official app, then sign out and back in if the editor appears stuck.
The header looks zoomed, shifted or clipped
Some variation is expected because X says monitor and browser display differences can crop 60 pixels at the top and bottom. Reopen the source file, move critical content toward the vertical center, and upload again. Do not add important text to the expendable edge bands.

The new image does not appear
Return to Edit profile, select the camera control and verify the preview. Click Apply and complete any separate Save action. Refresh the profile in a new tab or the official app to rule out a stale view.
Text is blurry
Start with a higher-resolution original, keep the canvas at 1500 × 500, and avoid repeatedly resaving a JPG. For logos and crisp lettering, test an optimized PNG; for photographic backgrounds, a high-quality JPG is often smaller.
Practical templates and export checklist
Minimal brand banner
Use a quiet background across the full canvas, place the logo and one short value statement in the centered safe zone, and leave the top and bottom bands decorative. This remains legible when the viewport narrows.
Rank #4
Portrait or team photo
Position faces near the center rather than at the top or bottom. Leave extra space around heads so a 60-pixel edge crop does not cut hair or foreheads.
Product or event announcement
Put the date, product name or call to action in the middle third. Include a short alternative description in the profile or post text; the image itself should not be the only place essential information appears.
- Canvas is exactly 1500 × 500 pixels.
- Essential elements are outside the 60-pixel top and bottom risk zones.
- Format is JPG, PNG or a non-animated GIF.
- File has been optimized and opens correctly before upload.
- You have previewed both a wide and narrow view.
- You clicked Apply and Save after positioning.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean rendering of a public page for design review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot through one request. It is separate from uploading an X header, but it can help you inspect how a profile or landing page looks without manually configuring a browser. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the full parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic cURL request is:
Best Value
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page and element captures, device and viewport controls, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, PDF output, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture and a usage API. Every feature is on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
Cost, reliability and workflow notes
For a header image itself, the main cost is your design and review workflow rather than a required service. Keep the original editable file so you can reposition elements when X changes its presentation. Store a web-optimized export separately from the source, and record the canvas dimensions in the filename or design document. When reviewing a public page, ScreenshotNeo’s verdict and billing headers let you distinguish a clean capture from a bot check, blank page, timeout or cache hit without guessing.

Is 1500 × 500 mandatory?
No. It is X’s recommended canvas. Other dimensions may upload, but a different ratio increases the chance of scaling or cropping.
Can I use an animated header GIF?
No. X lists GIF as a format but says animated GIFs are not supported for profile or header images.
Why does my centered design still lose pixels?
X says monitor and browser differences can crop up to 60 pixels from the top and bottom, so even centered artwork should keep a safety margin.
Should I export my header as JPG or PNG?
Use JPG for most photos and gradients; choose PNG when crisp flat graphics or transparency in your workflow matter. Check the final file size either way.
