A 2023 study reported that an engineered, twisted carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber could act as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) replacement in animals, integrating with bone and supporting normal movement in rabbits and sheep. It did not test the fiber in people, so it does not show that the material can replace a damaged ACL in a patient, and it is not an approved or available treatment.
What the team built
The study, led by Wang and colleagues and published online on 4 May 2023 in Nature Nanotechnology (volume 18, pages 1085–1093), describes a fiber made from aligned carbon nanotubes. The nanotubes are assembled into a hierarchical helical fiber. “Hierarchical” means the structure is organized at more than one size scale, here with nanoscale and microscale channels. “Helical” means the fiber is twisted into a spiral.

The authors summarize their goal in the abstract: “Here we introduce an artificial ligament that has the required mechanical properties and can integrate with the host bone and restore movement in animals.” That sentence is the authors’ claim about their own work, and it is limited to animals.
What the animal tests measured
The experiments used an ACL replacement model in two animal species. The reported details are:

- Animals: rabbits and sheep, with the fiber implanted as an ACL replacement.
- Follow-up: 13 weeks of implantation before pull-out testing. Pull-out testing measures how firmly the implant is anchored in bone by pulling on it until it separates.
- Bone integration: the authors report that the implant integrated with the host bone.
- Function: the authors report that the animals could run and jump normally.
This article does not quote pull-out strength values or other measured numbers. Readers who need them should consult the full paper, which is the primary source for any figure.
Why “ideal replacement” overstates the evidence
The headline describes the fiber as an ideal replacement for damaged ligaments. The evidence supports a narrower claim, for several reasons:

- Animal results only. Rabbit and sheep knees differ from human knees in size, anatomy and loading, so animal function does not predict human function directly.
- Short reported window. The 13-week period before pull-out testing is a limited time frame for judging how an implant holds up over years of use.
- No human data. The study does not report human safety, effectiveness, regulatory approval or clinical availability.
- No clinical comparison. Current ACL reconstructions generally use tendon grafts. Calling the fiber “ideal” implies it beats those options, and the study does not establish that in patients.
Two related CNT ligament approaches are different experiments
Two other studies are often mentioned alongside this one. They use different materials and should not be read as the same design or as supporting results for the all-CNT fiber.

A separate 2023 study describes a helical composite fiber (HCF). It is made by wrapping aligned CNT sheets around polyester fibers, so the core is polyester rather than CNTs alone. Its abstract reports ACL reconstruction work in rats and describes bone tunnel repair. The authors contrast this with tunnel enlargement reported for commercial bare-polyester artificial ligaments. A bone tunnel is the hole drilled through bone to hold the graft, and enlargement of that hole is a recognized concern with some synthetic ligaments.

CNT and collagen coating on PET fibers (2020)
A 2020 study coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers, used as an artificial ligament substrate, with single-walled CNTs in a collagen matrix. The coating was built up by layer-by-layer solidification of an aqueous CNT and collagen dispersion, with controlled infrared irradiation. This is a laboratory fabrication method. It is not evidence of a marketed CNT implant.

The three entries describe different preclinical work, so the table is a description of design differences, not a ranking of which approach performs better.

What is and is not established for patients
- Established in the 2023 study: the all-CNT fiber was implanted as an ACL replacement in rabbits and sheep, and the authors report bone integration and normal running and jumping in those animals.
- Not established: human safety, human effectiveness, regulatory approval, clinical availability, or long-term outcomes of any kind.
If you searched for this as a product
The fiber is an experimental construct, not a consumer product, and the sources reviewed do not identify a purchasable version. Generic carbon nanotube materials, standard ACL graft hardware and rehabilitation equipment are not the experimental graft, and none of them should be treated as a substitute for it.

- Human clinical trials that are registered in a public registry such as ClinicalTrials.gov and report results.
- Animal follow-up beyond 13 weeks, showing how the bone anchorage and the fiber hold up over time.
- Independent replication of the bone integration and function results by groups other than the original team.
- Regulatory submissions and manufacturing work showing the fiber can be produced consistently at scale.
The 2023 paper is dated, and this article reflects the published record available to it. Later trial or regulatory news may exist, so check current registries and regulatory databases before drawing conclusions about availability.
