Twinkle Tray is a free Windows utility that can schedule brightness changes on compatible monitors. It is especially useful when Windows has no brightness slider for an external display, but it depends on the monitor and connection supporting DDC/CI. It changes hardware brightness when that control path works; it is not a screen-dimming overlay or a replacement for Windows Night light.
What Twinkle Tray does—and what it changes
Windows commonly provides brightness controls for built-in laptop screens, but external desktop monitors often rely on their own on-screen menus and physical buttons. Twinkle Tray adds system-tray controls for compatible displays, including separate sliders and multi-monitor options. Its feature list includes brightness adjustments by time of day and when idle. Twinkle Tray’s official site and project repository describe support for Windows 10 and 11.
For most external monitors, Twinkle Tray sends brightness commands over DDC/CI, a communication channel that lets software control supported monitor settings through the video connection. A successful command changes the monitor’s own brightness control rather than laying a dark translucent layer over the picture. Built-in laptop and all-in-one displays may instead use Windows WMI-related interfaces. Neither method guarantees that every display exposes or obeys the same controls.
A slider value is a monitor control setting, not a standardized luminance measurement: 50% does not necessarily mean half the measured brightness or half the power use. If software merely overlays a dark filter, it makes the image look dimmer without lowering the display backlight. Twinkle Tray’s FAQ says it does not plan to provide that kind of below-hardware-limit overlay dimming.

Quick verdict
- Best for: Windows users with one or more DDC/CI-compatible external monitors who want scheduled hardware brightness control, system-tray sliders, or multi-monitor adjustments.
- Strong points: Free utility, time-of-day and idle automation, multi-display controls, hotkeys, normalization and command-line support.
- Main drawback: Compatibility depends on the monitor, firmware, cable, graphics setup and connection path; docks and adapters are frequent trouble spots.
- Not a fit for: HDR brightness management, Windows Night light integration, or guaranteed control through every dock or display connection.

Check compatibility before setting a schedule
For external monitors, start with the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and connection path. The project says most monitors offer DDC/CI, but it may be disabled by default. Its display detection and support guide explains the separate detection paths and known issues.
- Enable DDC/CI: Look in the monitor OSD for DDC/CI or a similar control setting. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Prefer a direct connection: A direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection is a useful first test. USB-C hubs, USB or Thunderbolt docks, Surface docks, KVMs, splitters and converters may pass video but not DDC/CI.
- Expect per-display differences: One monitor can respond while another in the same setup does not. Compatibility is model- and connection-specific.
- Know the edge cases: The project lists VGA/DVI connections, wireless displays such as Miracast, certain docks and converters, and some unstable DDC/CI implementations as problem areas.
- For laptop panels: WMI-related support can work for built-in displays, but OEM drivers, HDR modes, hybrid graphics and manufacturer utilities can affect behavior.
- For HDR displays: Twinkle Tray’s FAQ says HDR is not currently supported. Changing contrast may be possible on some systems, but that is not equivalent to HDR brightness management.
Install Twinkle Tray from an official source
Get the installer from the project website or its official GitHub repository, or use the Microsoft Store. The project site recommends its GitHub installer. Avoid third-party download portals.

For WinGet, open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run:
winget install xanderfrangos.twinkletrayAfter installation, launch the app and check the Windows system tray. If Windows hides the icon, open the tray’s hidden-icons area; the icon may also be available to pin in taskbar settings.
Set up and test a time-of-day schedule
The official feature list confirms time-of-day automation, but menu labels and schedule behavior can vary by release. Open Twinkle Tray’s settings and look for the time-of-day or automatic-adjustment section rather than relying on an exact menu path. The project’s public materials do not establish one stable, version-specific click sequence, so confirm the options shown in your installed build.

- Confirm display control first. Open the brightness flyout and check whether each connected display appears. Change one monitor’s slider and verify that the physical screen brightness changes.
- Open settings and find automation. Look for the time-of-day schedule or automatic brightness controls. Determine whether the build offers fixed clock times, transition points, ramping, or per-monitor values; do not assume options that are not shown.
- Add at least two schedule points. Choose a daytime brightness and a lower evening setting, then save or apply the schedule if the interface requires it.
- Test with near-future times. Temporarily set a change a few minutes ahead, observe whether it happens at the expected time, and check whether the change is immediate or gradual. Restore your intended schedule afterward.
- Check persistence. Restart Windows and confirm that Twinkle Tray starts and the schedule remains enabled. Also test after sleep and wake, monitor power cycling, and docking or undocking if those are part of your routine.
Twinkle Tray also advertises idle-based adjustments. That is separate from a time-of-day schedule, so select it only if you want brightness to respond to inactivity rather than the clock.
Choose starting brightness levels, then tune by eye
These ranges are practical starting points, not universal targets or medical recommendations. Room lighting, glare, monitor size, viewing distance and the content you work with all affect a comfortable setting.

Use a level that keeps text and detail clear without making the screen feel glaring. Different monitors can look very different at the same percentage, so set each display independently if needed.

Troubleshoot detection and control failures
The monitor is missing from Twinkle Tray
- Restart Twinkle Tray, then restart Windows if the display still does not appear.
- Check whether Windows itself sees the monitor and whether it is powered on and using the expected input.
- Enable DDC/CI in the monitor’s OSD, then reopen Twinkle Tray and review its detection-method settings.
- Temporarily remove docks, hubs, KVMs, splitters and converters. Test with a direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection and, if needed, another cable.
- If the display is wireless, note that the project’s troubleshooting guide lists Miracast as unsupported.
The monitor appears, but its brightness does not change
- Recheck DDC/CI in the OSD and try the monitor’s normal picture preset; a special preset or mode can interfere with commands.
- Test a direct connection to rule out an adapter or dock that passes video but not monitor control.
- Close other display-management utilities temporarily to check for competing control.
- If AMD Radeon software is in use, check whether Custom Colors is enabled; the project identifies it as a known trouble area.
- Consider whether HDR or another special display mode is active, since HDR brightness control is not supported by Twinkle Tray.
It works until sleep, wake or docking
Reconnect the display, restart Twinkle Tray, and review its detection-method settings. If the problem occurs only through a dock, test a direct connection; hubs and converters can interfere with DDC/CI even when the picture is normal.
Only one monitor responds
Test each screen separately. DDC/CI support and exposed controls vary by monitor, so a mixed-brand setup may not behave uniformly.
A monitor becomes difficult to wake
Keep automated power-state commands out of a beginner brightness schedule. The project’s FAQ warns that turning a display off through DDC/CI can make it difficult to wake and may require a power cycle or factory reset. Use the monitor’s physical controls to recover it.

For Windows Night light scheduling, see Microsoft’s display brightness and color settings guide. Twinkle Tray’s FAQ says it does not integrate with Night light; the two features address different controls, and can be used together if the result suits your setup. The separate alternatives are documented by Microsoft Power Display and the Monitorian project. Dell’s available documentation for Display and Peripheral Manager is here.
Microsoft’s Power Display documentation notes that DDC/CI probing can be flaky and that a small number of monitors with malformed capability strings can trigger a Windows kernel crash. It describes safeguards, exclusions and a max-compatibility mode, while warning that the latter can produce black screens or unpredictable changes that may require a power cycle. That makes it a credible option for existing PowerToys users, not an automatic fix for troublesome DDC/CI hardware.
Optional: change brightness from the command line
Twinkle Tray supports command-line brightness control, but the application must already be running. The project documents these arguments:
