TV vs. Gaming Monitor for PS4: Which Is Better for Your Setup?

Neither a TV nor a gaming monitor is automatically better for PS4. Choose a TV for couch-distance play and shared viewing, or a monitor for a desk and close seating. For responsiveness, compare measured input lag on the exact display in the mode you plan to use; the product category alone does not tell you which will feel faster.

TV vs. monitor for PS4: the practical differences

What matters TV Gaming monitor
Typical fit Couch seating, a living room, or shared viewing Desk placement and close, single-player seating
Input lag Varies by model; Game Mode may reduce it Also depends on the specific model and signal mode; check independent measurements
PS4 compatibility Works if it accepts the console’s HDMI output Works if it accepts the console’s HDMI output at a useful resolution and 60 Hz
Audio and ports Check the specific set’s speakers, audio outputs and inputs Check the specific monitor’s speakers, audio outputs and inputs

Sony says TV input latency differs by model and that Game Mode can reduce it, though performance varies and some features may need to be disabled. That makes model-specific testing more useful than assuming every TV is slow or every gaming monitor is fast. Sony’s PS4 Pro FAQ also distinguishes input latency from other display characteristics.

Do not treat a monitor’s advertised “1 ms response time” as its input lag. Response time describes how quickly pixels change; input lag measures delay between a signal and its appearance on screen. Compare independent input-lag measurements for the display’s 60 Hz mode and, where available, Game Mode.

Choose based on where and how you play

Choose a monitor for a desk setup

If you sit close to the screen and usually play alone, start with monitors that accept the PS4’s HDMI signal at the resolution you want. Consider size and viewing comfort at your actual desk distance, then compare tested input lag at 60 Hz and check how you will handle audio.

Choose a TV for couch or shared viewing

If you play from a couch or want the screen to serve a family room, a TV is often the more convenient fit. Size it for your viewing distance and check whether its Game Mode performs well on the exact model. A TV is not automatically laggy: Sony says latency varies between sets, and Game Mode is intended to reduce it.

Match the display to your PS4 model

Original PS4

Sony’s 2013 PS4 FAQ lists HDMI output resolutions of 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, and says the original PS4 does not support 4K output for games. A 4K screen can display and scale the console’s lower-resolution signal, but it cannot make the original PS4 send 4K game video. A good 1080p display is sufficient for the original console’s listed maximum game output. Read Sony’s original PS4 FAQ.

PS4 Pro

PS4 Pro can output 4K at up to 60 frames per second when connected to a compatible 4K display with a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. That output capability does not mean every game renders at native 4K. Sony’s guidance describes PS4 game frame rates up to 60 fps; a 120 Hz or 144 Hz display does not make PS4 games run at those rates. Sony’s PS4 Pro FAQ covers its display requirements, while the original PS4 FAQ describes the console’s game capabilities.

For either console, check that a monitor accepts the PS4’s signal at the resolution you want and at 60 Hz. Do not pay extra for a high refresh-rate label on the assumption that the PS4 will use a 120 Hz or 144 Hz game mode.

What to check for PS4 HDR and PS4 Pro 4K

HDR on PS4

PlayStation’s HDR guidance calls for an HDR10-capable 2K or 4K TV, HDR-enabled content, a Premium HDMI cable and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later. Connect the console directly to the TV for HDR, use an HDMI input that supports HDR, enable any required enhanced-input setting, then set HDR and Deep Color on the PS4 to Automatic. Follow PlayStation’s PS4 HDR setup instructions for the applicable connection and settings.

4K output on PS4 Pro

For Pro’s 4K output, check the entire signal path: the display input, cable, and any receiver or switch between the console and screen. Sony says a lack of HDCP 2.2 support in any element can prevent 4K. Forcing HDCP 1.40 may restore the picture, but can limit output to 1080p. On some BRAVIA TVs, the relevant HDMI input also needs to use Enhanced format, and not every input supports 4K HDR. See Sony’s 4K HDR troubleshooting guidance and PlayStation’s PS4 Pro FAQ.

An HDR label alone does not establish that a display will deliver a strong HDR image. Check the exact model’s capabilities and the input you intend to use.

Check compatibility before you buy or troubleshoot

  1. Identify whether you have the original PS4 or a PS4 Pro; their maximum output capabilities differ.
  2. Check the display manual for supported resolution, HDR format and the exact HDMI input that supports them.
  3. For HDR, confirm HDR10 support and compatible content. Use a suitable Premium HDMI cable, connect the PS4 directly to the TV, enable HDR on the correct input and set HDR and Deep Color to Automatic. See PlayStation’s HDR instructions.
  4. For PS4 Pro 4K, confirm HDCP 2.2 support across the display, cable and any intermediary AV equipment. If 4K fails, inspect the relevant HDMI input’s settings and the signal chain; Sony’s BRAVIA 4K HDR guide describes one model-family-specific setting.
  5. Enable Game Mode if available and consult independent input-lag measurements for the exact display and signal mode. Response-time figures are not input-lag measurements.
  6. Compare screen size at your seating distance, audio options, available ports, warranty and whether you will also use the screen with a PC or for TV and video.

Verdict by setup

  • Desk and close seating: Start with a monitor that accepts your PS4’s signal, then prioritize comfortable size, measured 60 Hz input lag and workable audio.
  • Couch or shared room: Start with a TV sized for the room, with a usable Game Mode and model-specific lag measurements.
  • Original PS4: You do not need 4K for the console’s game output; consider a 4K display only if its benefits for other devices or uses matter to you.
  • PS4 Pro with 4K or HDR goals: Verify the display’s specific HDMI input, cable and any equipment in the signal path before counting on those features.
