That is the most broadly supported first fix—not a guaranteed fix for every device, since the TV and connected device are unspecified here.
Why a TV USB port may not power a streaming stick
USB ports on TVs are not interchangeable power supplies: the power available depends on the TV model, while the device has its own requirements. Google says a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer may not get enough power from a TV USB port. Roku likewise warns that many TVs do not supply enough power for the Streaming Stick 4K. These are model-specific examples, not proof that every TV port is underpowered.
For its Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer troubleshooting, Google support puts it plainly: “If it’s plugged into your TV’s USB port or a different adapter, it might not be getting enough power.” A prompt may say “low power” or “insufficient power”; Google’s documented screen wording includes “g.co/cast/power.”
The first fix: use the device’s specified wall adapter
- Identify the connected device and its exact model. A streaming stick, external hard drive, and USB hub have different power and compatibility needs.
- For a streaming stick with a low-power warning, disconnect it from the TV’s USB power port. Connect it using the supplied power adapter and recommended cable, then plug the adapter into a reliable wall outlet. Follow the maker’s model-specific setup instructions. Google recommends a wall outlet for the cited Google devices; Roku’s player troubleshooting also covers power issues.
- If the original adapter is missing or damaged, check the device maker’s guidance before buying a replacement. Match the specified voltage and current as well as connector and cable requirements; a plug that fits is not enough.
- Make sure the cable is firmly seated and in good condition. If the warning remains, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps for that exact model rather than assuming the TV port is defective. Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes cable and connection checks.
Adapter ratings differ by device
There is no universal replacement rating for an unspecified streaming device. Manufacturer guidance gives different figures for different products and situations:

Use the value specified for your device and region, not a rating borrowed from another brand. These figures are product-specific support instructions, not a general USB-port standard.
If the connected device is a hard drive, not a streaming stick
A powered USB hub is a narrower option for an external drive that needs more power than the TV or connected device can provide. Roku says a drive may need more power and recommends a powered hub for a drive without its own adapter. Check that the TV and device support the arrangement before connecting one; this is not the default fix for powering a streaming stick. See Roku’s external-drive guidance.

Where the drive has its own power adapter, check its instructions and whether that adapter can be used with your setup. TV USB output varies by model: for example, Sony’s guidance for the KDL-70R520A says an external USB HDD exceeding 500mA (2.5W) needs external power. That threshold applies to that Sony model, not to TVs in general. Sony support

Look up the television or other host device’s manual for the USB port’s stated output and intended use. The specifications are not transferable between products: Onkyo, for example, specifies 5V/1A for the USB port on its TX-NR6100 receiver. That is a receiver-specific figure, not a TV specification. When the wall adapter does not solve it
- Recheck the device model and use the power adapter and cable its manufacturer specifies.
- Reseat both ends of the power cable and inspect it for damage; try the manufacturer’s recommended cable if available.
- Follow the full model-specific troubleshooting guide. A continuing power symptom alone does not establish that the TV’s USB port is faulty.
- For a storage drive, confirm whether it needs its own power supply and whether the TV supports the drive or powered-hub setup.
