If your TV appears to turn on but has a black screen and no sound, first check whether its own Home or Menu screen appears. If it does, the display is working and the problem is more likely with the selected input, app, channel, cable, or connected device. If no menu or picture appears on any source, try the safe checks below, then contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the problem persists.
Check whether the TV is responding
A black screen alone does not prove that the television has lost power. Look for a standby light if your model has one, try the TV’s physical Power button, and note whether the screen briefly lights up or you hear a startup sound. These signs can help distinguish a completely unresponsive set from one that appears to be running, but they do not identify a failed component. TCL’s troubleshooting guidance describes signs to check when a TV looks powered on but its screen stays black.

See whether the TV’s own menu appears
Press Home, Menu, or Settings on the remote. Button names depend on the model. If a menu appears, the TV can display an image; focus next on the source you were trying to watch. Try a different app, channel, or input. If the menu does not appear, continue with the connection and restart checks before concluding that the display has failed. TCL notes that menus and troubleshooting steps vary by model, remote, and software version.
Check the input and connected equipment
- Select the input where the set-top box, console, streaming device, or other equipment is connected.
- Make sure that device is powered on. If the TV shows “No Signal,” check the selected input and the connected device or cable; LG also recommends checking the TV connection and resetting the set-top box.
- Reseat the relevant HDMI, coaxial, antenna, optical, or audio connections. Check for visibly loose or damaged cables.
- If the issue affects only one HDMI device, restart that device and try another TV input if available. A known-working HDMI cable can help isolate a cable problem. A faulty or loose HDMI cable may prevent video even when sound works; replacing one will not resolve an internal TV fault. See TCL’s HDMI troubleshooting guidance.
Restart the TV and connected device
- Turn off the TV and the connected device involved in the problem.
- Unplug both from power and wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect power and turn the devices on.
- Select the correct TV input and check for a picture and sound.
This restart is a reasonable early check when a TV or connected device may be in a temporary software or signal state. If your setup differs, use the device maker’s instructions for safely disconnecting equipment. TCL’s guidance includes this power-cycle sequence.

When to seek model-specific support
If the Home or Menu screen remains invisible and the TV fails across multiple sources after these checks, an issue with the backlight, display, or another internal component is possible. General troubleshooting cannot identify which part has failed. Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified repair provider, and have the model number and a description of the symptoms ready. A light, click, or startup sound by itself is not enough to diagnose a specific component.
Use a factory reset only as a later step
TCL recommends considering a factory reset after other troubleshooting, not as the first response. It may erase settings or require setup again, and menu paths differ between models. Consult the instructions for your exact TV before resetting it. TCL’s no-picture/no-sound guidance cautions that the steps vary by model and software version.
