If your TV picture breaks into blocks, flickers, freezes, or shows lines, first check whether the problem affects every source or just one channel, app, input, or connected device. A clear TV menu with a glitching show points toward its signal, cable, or source; a corrupted menu or built-in picture test makes a TV fault more likely. Compare sources before buying a cable or replacing the television.
First, find out whether the TV or the source is at fault
While the picture is glitching, press the remote’s volume or settings button and look at the on-screen menu. If the menu is clear but the program is not, focus first on the channel, streaming service, external device, or connection feeding that picture. If the menu is distorted too, the TV itself becomes a stronger possibility.

Compare the same type of content across different sources: another channel, HDMI input, app, or device. Then run the TV’s picture test or screen self-diagnosis if its settings offer one. Samsung and LG provide picture or self-diagnosis tools for supported models, but their names and menu paths vary with model and software version. If broadcast or cable channels pixelate
Reception problems can look like a failing screen. Check whether the fault affects one channel or many, then inspect the antenna or coaxial connection. Unplug and firmly reconnect it at the TV and, where accessible, the wall outlet or receiver; look for looseness or visible damage. If your TV has a signal-strength or signal-quality diagnostic, check it while tuned to an affected channel.

If reception remains weak or unstable after checking the connection, contact the cable or broadcast provider; antenna placement or the reception setup may also need attention. Signal indicators and thresholds depend on model and region. For example, Samsung’s signal guidance is published for Saudi Arabia and should not be treated as a universal standard: Samsung Saudi Arabia’s troubleshooting page.
If an HDMI-connected box, console, or player glitches
- Turn off the TV and the connected device.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable, then reconnect it securely at both ends.
- Turn the devices back on and check the picture.
- If the problem remains, try a different HDMI input. If available, substitute a cable known to work or connect another source device to the same input.
- Run the TV’s HDMI cable test if its settings provide one. Samsung notes that this test may be unavailable on some models and may be intended for short cables.
If another cable or device makes the picture normal, the comparison helps isolate the faulty part. Replace the cable only if reseating, testing, or substitution points to it, and choose one suited to the source device and the resolution and refresh rate you use. HDMI requirements vary by equipment; LG’s set-top-box guidance recommends HDMI 2.0 or later for that specific scenario, not as a universal rule. If streaming video is distorted, stutters, or drops in quality
Separate a title problem from an app, device, or connection problem. Play another title in the same app, then try a different app on the same TV. If only one title is affected, report the issue to the streaming service. If several titles or apps glitch, check the streaming device and its cable to the TV as well as the network connection. Netflix lists a device or video cable among possible causes of distorted or stuttering playback; Netflix’s playback troubleshooting guide explains the service’s suggested checks.

Network congestion anywhere along the route to the screen can reduce streaming quality or disrupt playback, according to the Netflix Help Center. Check the connection using the diagnostic available on your TV, streaming device, or service. Try temporarily lowering video quality and consider whether other people or devices at home are using the connection heavily. YouTube TV also recommends checking another app, the connection, video quality, and concurrent streaming use in its streaming troubleshooting guide.

Netflix recommends a stable connection of 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, and 15 Mbps for UHD/4K on its service. Those figures are Netflix recommendations, not guarantees or universal minimums for every service or household. If playback remains slow or keeps buffering, Netflix advises checking the connection and seeking help from the internet provider where needed: Netflix’s recommended speeds and buffering troubleshooting.

- Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the TV’s own menu or picture test is corrupted, or the fault continues across inputs and devices you have verified work elsewhere.
- Contact the broadcast, cable, or antenna provider if the problem is limited to broadcast channels and reception remains weak after checking the connection.
- Contact the streaming service or internet provider when the evidence points to a single title/service or a persistent network problem, respectively.
A single case of pixelation does not by itself establish that the panel is defective. The source comparisons above can help identify what to troubleshoot before you pay for a replacement part or repair.
