TV Motion Smoothing: Turn It Off—and Fix the Choppy Motion That Can Remain

To stop the artificial, overly smooth look in movies, turn off your TV’s motion-interpolation setting for the picture mode and input you’re watching. If movement still looks uneven afterward, that may be film judder or display stutter rather than smoothing—and each calls for a different fix. TVs don’t all smooth every program by default, and setting names and behavior vary by model, year, source, and picture mode.

How do I turn off motion smoothing on my TV?

Look in the picture settings for a motion or motion-interpolation control. On Samsung TVs, the documented route is Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Auto Motion Plus Settings, also called Picture Clarity Settings. Samsung says the default is Auto, which may turn the feature on or off depending on the program. Select Off to disable it, or choose Custom to inspect the individual controls.

Samsung lists Blur Reduction, Judder Reduction, and LED Clear Motion separately. They are not interchangeable controls: blur reduction and judder reduction adjust different aspects of motion processing, while LED Clear Motion is a separate feature. If the menu names or path differ, consult the manual for your specific TV; Samsung notes that available functions and steps vary by model and year. See Samsung’s motion-settings instructions.

Other manufacturers use different names, so don’t assume the Samsung path applies to another brand. Check the picture settings for the affected input and mode, and test the same scene after changing one setting at a time. A TV may retain different settings for different picture modes or signal formats; streaming through a TV app, HDMI device, or Blu-ray player may therefore produce different results.

Why does my TV look like a soap opera?

Motion interpolation creates or processes frames to make movement appear smoother. On film content, strong interpolation can make a movie look unnaturally fluid—the effect commonly called the soap-opera effect. Turning off the interpolation control is the direct way to remove that processing, but it does not guarantee that every other motion artifact will disappear.

Why does motion still look choppy with motion smoothing off?

Judder and stutter can remain even when interpolation is disabled. They are distinct from the artificial smoothness interpolation creates.

Film judder

Film and other low-frame-rate material can show judder when frames are displayed for uneven durations. A television may offer a separate Film, Cinema, or Theatre cadence or judder-removal control. That may address the uneven cadence without turning interpolation up, but names and results depend on the TV and signal.

Display stutter

On a fast-response screen, low-frame-rate content can look stuttery because each frame remains visible long enough for the movement to seem discontinuous. Interpolation may reduce that impression, but increasing it can bring back the soap-opera look. The choice is a trade-off: prioritize the film’s natural cadence, or accept some processing for smoother motion.

How can I improve film motion without bringing back the soap-opera effect?

Try a separate film-cadence control

Check whether the TV has a judder-removal option distinct from its smoothness or interpolation slider. RTINGS’ 2025 guidance describes Sony’s CineMotion with Motionflow Custom and Clearness/Smoothness at minimum for certain 60p/i sources, and reports model-specific behavior for LG, Samsung, Hisense, and TCL. These are not universal instructions: the useful control depends on the model, source signal, and available settings. The RTINGS motion test guidance explains the distinctions and model-dependent approaches.

Match the source output to the film’s frame rate

A streaming box or player that can match its output frame rate to the content may let the TV display film at its native cadence instead of relying on interpolation. For example, Apple TV’s Match Frame Rate can output 24p or 25p for film content. Whether this helps depends on the source device, TV, and signal path; check the device’s own settings and compare the same scene before and after.

Check black-frame insertion only if it is enabled

Some judder-removal approaches interact with black-frame insertion (BFI), also called backlight strobing on some TVs. Don’t change BFI just because motion looks uneven. If your TV is using that feature, try disabling or adjusting it as a separate test, since the interaction varies by model.

Is Filmmaker Mode enough to stop motion smoothing?

Filmmaker Mode is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that motion processing is off on every television, input, or picture mode. Samsung describes the mode as showing movies or TV shows without changes to picture settings and notes that the image may look darker. Check the motion controls for the selected mode and source rather than assuming the mode behaves identically across manufacturers; feature availability also varies by TV model and year.

What should I check when the setting seems to have no effect?

  • Confirm the active input and picture mode. Make sure you changed the settings for the app or HDMI input you are actually using, and for its current picture mode.
  • Change one motion control at a time. Compare the same scene before and after so you can tell whether interpolation, film-cadence handling, or another feature changed the result.
  • Check the source’s output format. A streaming device or player may send a different frame rate than a TV app. If available, test frame-rate matching.
  • Look for mode or signal restrictions. A 2026 Philips manual confirms that motion styles and controls may depend on picture mode, game mode, variable refresh rate, and source frame rate. See the Philips TV manual.
  • Use the TV’s manual for exact steps. Menu labels and feature availability are model- and year-specific. If you need tailored directions, provide the exact TV model and whether the content comes from a built-in app, HDMI device, or disc player.
