For most seated viewing, place the television so the center of the screen is at, or just below, your naturally seated eye level. Measure from the floor to your eyes while sitting in the seat you actually use, then use that measurement as the starting point. A floor number such as 42 inches can be useful as an estimate, but it is not a universal rule: sofa height, posture, screen size, furniture, glare and wall structure all change the best position.
Before drilling, check the television’s viewing-angle specifications, the mount’s VESA pattern and weight rating, and the mount manufacturer’s installation instructions. If exact center alignment is impossible, Philips advises keeping the screen’s top edge no more than 15 cm above eye level; treat that as Philips-specific fallback guidance rather than a universal engineering standard.

The practical answer: start with seated eye level
Television height is fundamentally an eye-line decision, not a fixed distance from the floor. Sit naturally in your usual viewing position, look straight ahead, and measure from the floor to your eyes. The initial target is for the screen’s midpoint to land at that height or slightly below it.

This approach is consistent across the manufacturer guidance reviewed here. Sony, Philips and LG all direct viewers toward screen-center alignment with seated eye level. Philips’s wall-mounting manual states: “The TV is mounted at the correct height if your eyes are level with the centre of the screen when you sit down.”

- Important: Watch the video and learn the”Designed for" details listed below!
- Designed for concrete, brick and wood studs wall (single stud).
- Designed for TVs up to 80 lbs (36.3 KG) and display sized 26" - 55" (66 CM - 140 CM).
- Designed for VESA sized from 3.9'' x 3.9'' through 15.7'' x 15.7''.
- Comfortable View with tilt range from +10° to -5°.
Use the measurement as a starting point, then test the proposed outline from the real seat. A room with bar stools, a recliner, a low sofa, a bed or a standing viewing position may need a different compromise. The most comfortable location is the one that keeps your usual line of sight natural while still clearing furniture and allowing safe installation.
How to measure the right height in your room
- Use the primary seat. Sit in the chair or sofa used most often. Keep your back and head in your normal posture rather than sitting unusually straight.
- Look forward naturally. Do not tilt your chin up or down to “aim” at an imaginary screen.
- Measure floor to eye level. Have another person measure vertically from the floor to the center of your eyes. Record the result in centimeters or inches.
- Mark the screen center. On the wall, mark a point at that eye-height measurement. This point represents the desired center of the television, not its bottom edge.
- Account for the actual TV. Measure the television’s height and identify the midpoint of its visible panel. Position that midpoint over your wall mark, then check the resulting top and bottom clearances.
- Mock up before drilling. Mark the full screen outline with painter’s tape or temporarily position the television on its stand. View it from the normal seat and from any secondary seats before committing to holes.
The measurement should be taken in the finished room. Replacing a standard sofa with a deep sectional, adding a thick cushion or changing from seated to reclined viewing can move eye level by several centimeters.
What the published numbers actually mean
Manufacturer pages provide useful reference points, but each number has a specific context. None establishes one height that suits every room.

| 42 inches (106.7 cm) from floor to screen center | Samsung’s approximate alternative for a 5-foot-6-inch (168 cm) person seated on a standard couch in the United States | Use only as a rough starting estimate when you cannot measure the actual seated eye level; Samsung says measuring your own eye level is preferable. |
| 90–110 cm seated eye height | Philips’s typical range for seated viewers | Use as a plausibility check, not as a prescription. Your furniture and posture may place you outside this range. |
| Top edge no more than 15 cm above eye level | Philips’s fallback when exact screen-center alignment is not possible | Attribute this limit to Philips. It is not a universal comfort or engineering standard. |
| Two to five times screen diagonal | Sony’s general viewing-distance guideline | Use it to assess seating distance separately. It does not calculate mounting height. |
The 42-inch example is often repeated as if it were a rule. It is not: it assumes a particular viewer and couch, and a larger or smaller television can put the screen edges in very different places even when the center is identical.
Calculate placement from the screen, not the bezel
Mounting measurements should refer to the visible screen and the manufacturer’s mounting points, not simply the outer cabinet. Bezels vary, and the bracket holes may not be centered vertically on every model.

For a television on its supplied stand
Measure from the floor to the stand’s support surface, then add the distance from that surface to the screen center. Compare the total with your seated eye-height mark. If the center is substantially above eye level, a lower console or a different stand position may be more effective than raising the furniture.
For a wall-mounted television
Find the screen-center target first. Then use the television’s installation diagram to determine how far the VESA mounting holes sit from the panel center and from the cabinet edges. Transfer those offsets to the wall only after locating studs or confirming that the wall and anchors meet the mount’s requirements.

Choose among a stand, fixed mount or adjustable mount
The meaningful choice is not simply “wall or furniture.” It is whether the setup can keep the screen near the main viewer’s eye line while meeting structural, access and posture requirements.
| Option | Best when | Check before choosing | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supplied stand on furniture | The console places the screen center near seated eye level and you want simple access to cables and controls. | Console height, stand footprint, ventilation and tip-over stability. | Height is limited by the furniture and the stand design; changing the seating position may make the screen too high or low. |
| Fixed wall mount | The wall can support the television and the viewing position is consistent. | VESA pattern, television and mount weight ratings, wall construction, cable routing and installation instructions. | Once installed, the screen position is not easily changed; cable access may be less convenient. |
| Tilting or otherwise adjustable mount | Different seats, reclined viewing or furniture constraints make one fixed angle unsuitable. | Adjustment range, clearance from the wall, VESA fit, weight rating and access to adjustment hardware. | More moving parts and installation considerations; a tilt can change reflections and the apparent line of sight. |
Samsung describes its televisions as VESA compliant and recommends a VESA-compliant mount designed for the television’s size. Compatibility still has to be verified for the specific model; “VESA compatible” alone does not confirm the hole spacing, load rating or wall hardware you need.

Wall-mounting: a safe height-setting sequence
- Read the television and mount manuals. Confirm the model’s VESA pattern, supported screw size, weight and any clearance requirements.
- Inspect the wall. Identify studs or use an anchoring method explicitly rated for the wall construction and the combined load. Do not rely on a decorative panel or unsupported plasterboard.
- Set the screen-center mark. Use the seated eye-height measurement, then adjust for the television’s hole offsets and the mount’s own geometry.
- Check furniture and connections. Make sure the bottom edge clears the console, sound equipment and power outlets, and that cables can bend without strain.
- Check the viewing angle. Sony directs owners to their model’s viewing-angle specifications. Compare those limits with the seats at the sides and with any planned tilt.
- Install and recheck. Tighten hardware to the mount instructions, attach the safety features, hang the television with assistance, and verify that the screen is level and centered on the wall mark.
If the mount’s instructions conflict with a generic diagram or online rule, follow the mount and television manuals. They are specific to the hardware carrying the load.
Adjust for posture, furniture and room use
Low sofas and deep cushions
A low sofa lowers eye height. Measure after the cushions are in place and after you settle into your normal position. Raising the television to clear a console may be necessary, but do not assume that a higher screen is comfortable simply because it clears furniture.
Recliners and beds
Reclining changes the direction you look. A screen that is centered for an upright sofa viewer may appear high when your head is supported by a recliner or pillow. Test the fully reclined position and consider an adjustable mount if the room serves both upright and reclined viewing.
Bar stools, kitchen counters and standing viewing
If people watch while standing or sitting on tall stools, their eye level can be far above a living-room measurement. Decide which posture is primary. A compromise height may serve both, but no single position can place the center exactly at two substantially different eye levels.
Multiple seating rows
Prioritize the seat used most often and check the viewing-angle limits from the others. Side seats may need a swivel or tilt adjustment rather than a higher installation.

Glare and windows
Height cannot solve every reflection problem. Before drilling, view the taped outline at different times of day and with room lights on. If glare forces you to tilt the screen, confirm that the resulting angle remains within the television’s specified viewing range.
Keep viewing distance separate from mounting height
Sony’s placement guidance gives a general viewing distance of two to five times the screen diagonal. For example, a 55-inch diagonal corresponds to a broad distance range when that rule is applied, but the rule does not tell you how high to mount the set. Height still comes from seated eye level, furniture and the screen’s physical dimensions.
Distance and height interact in practice: moving closer makes vertical misalignment more noticeable, while moving farther away reduces the apparent angle. Treat them as two checks rather than combining them into a single formula.

Using a universal floor number
Symptom: The television is installed at a popular height but feels too high or low from your sofa. Correction: Re-measure floor-to-eye height in the actual seat and compare the screen center, not the bottom edge, with that measurement.

Ignoring the mount’s hole offset
Symptom: The bracket is level, but the screen center misses the intended eye line. Correction: Use the model-specific VESA diagram and account for the distance between the mounting holes and the panel center.
Drilling before testing the outline
Symptom: The installed position clears the furniture but creates glare or an awkward neck angle. Correction: Tape the proposed screen edges and inspect from every important seat before making permanent holes.
Choosing a mount without checking compatibility
Symptom: The screws, hole spacing or load rating do not match. Correction: Verify VESA dimensions, supported screen size, weight rating, screw specification and wall requirements for both the television and mount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWorked examples for decision-making
Example: a standard sofa and console
Measure the seated eye height, mark that point as screen center and compare it with the television on its stand. If the console places the center close to the mark and leaves safe clearance, the stand may be the simplest choice. If the center is high, lowering the console is generally more direct than raising the screen further.
Example: a recliner shared with an upright sofa
Measure both positions. If the two eye lines are close, a fixed mount may work. If the recliner’s line of sight differs substantially, an adjustable mount can let you fine-tune the angle, but test the full range before installation.
Example: a kitchen viewed from stools
Use the stool position as the primary reference if that is where most viewing occurs. A living-room eye-height target would not describe this room’s normal posture. Check that the higher installation remains secure, glare-free and within the television’s viewing-angle limits.
A final pre-installation checklist
- Seated eye height measured in the actual primary seat.
- Screen center marked at or slightly below that height.
- Full screen outline tested from all important seats.
- Top and bottom clearances checked against furniture and equipment.
- Glare evaluated with daylight and room lighting.
- Viewing-angle specifications checked for side seats and reclined positions.
- Television VESA pattern, weight and screw requirements confirmed.
- Mount size, load rating and wall hardware confirmed.
- Cable routing and future access planned.
- Television and mount instructions available during installation.
The best TV height is therefore a measured, room-specific position: screen center at your natural seated eye level, adjusted only as much as furniture, posture, viewing angles and safe mounting require.
