To use 4K HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR) and 120Hz from a console, connect it directly to a TV HDMI port rated for 4K 120Hz or HDMI 2.1, then change that input’s signal format to the TV’s enhanced or high-bandwidth mode. Turn on Game Mode, enable VRR, and select the corresponding video-output options on the console.

The exact label varies by model, and the result depends on the TV, console, game, cable, firmware and every device between them. A setting cannot add support that the panel or HDMI hardware does not have.

What HDMI setting enables 4K HDR and 120Hz?

The important control is the HDMI input’s enhanced, high-bandwidth or HDMI 2.1 signal format. TVs often ship with a standard or compatibility mode that limits the input until you explicitly enable the faster format. Look in the TV’s input, external-device or HDMI settings for a choice such as Enhanced format, HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color or HDMI UHD Color.

Use the port that the television identifies for 4K 120Hz, 4K 120Hz/8K, VRR or gaming. Full bandwidth is frequently available on only one or two inputs, so plugging into a visually identical but lower-bandwidth socket can leave the console at 4K 60Hz.

Confirm the complete signal chain first

Before changing menus, verify that the TV model, console and game all support the combination you want. PlayStation states that PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120Hz video output, but that capability still depends on the rest of the home-entertainment setup. A title may render below 4K or use a performance mode that changes its resolution even when the console and TV are configured correctly.

  • The television must have an HDMI input with the required bandwidth and support for HDR, 120Hz and, if desired, VRR.
  • The console must expose the requested output mode; older hardware may not support 4K 120Hz.
  • The game must offer a 120Hz or VRR mode where those features are required by its design.
  • The cable and any receiver, soundbar or switch must pass the signal without reducing its format.

Choose the correct TV HDMI port

Connect the console directly to the television while you configure it. Inspect the labels beside each socket and the TV manual for wording such as 4K 120Hz, 4K 120Hz/8K, VRR or a gaming icon. Some sets have their highest-bandwidth input on the side, while others place it on the rear; the physical location is model-specific.

Do not assume that every HDMI socket has identical capabilities. A receiver or switch can be reintroduced after testing, but it must support the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR formats and VRR standard. If the direct connection works and the routed connection does not, the intermediary is the limiting component.

Enable the enhanced input format

Open the settings for the specific HDMI input to which the console is connected. Manufacturers use different names for the same idea:

TV manufacturer Enhanced or high-bandwidth setting named in its documentation
Sony Enhanced format; Enhanced format (VRR); Enhanced format (4K120)
LG HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color
Samsung HDMI UHD Color
Panasonic HDMI HDR Setting
Philips HDMI mode
Vizio HDMI Mode 2.1

Only one of these labels will appear on a particular television. Select the option associated with the console’s input, not a global setting for an unused socket. On some models, the enhanced choice is split into separate selections for ordinary high bandwidth, VRR and 4K 120Hz; choose the mode that covers the feature you intend to use.

Turn on Game Mode and VRR

Enable Game Mode for the console input if the TV provides it. Game Mode reduces processing that can add input delay. On select Samsung models, the manufacturer says Game Mode can unlock 4K at 120Hz, VRR and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM), but the exact behavior varies by model.

Next, enable the television’s VRR control. The menu may call it VRR, Variable Refresh Rate, FreeSync or another compatible gaming standard. If your set offers separate VRR and enhanced-format choices, both may be required. A console cannot activate VRR when the selected HDMI port, cable or intermediate device does not carry the necessary signal.

PS5 settings for 4K HDR, VRR and 120Hz

After selecting the enhanced HDMI mode on the TV, configure the PS5 from its system menus:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
  4. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic.
  5. Turn on VRR when the television supports it.
  6. Enable HDR in the PS5 video-output settings, then follow the console’s HDR adjustment screens so the brightness pattern is visible without clipping.

PS5’s information screen reports the current output capabilities. If 120Hz or VRR is unavailable, return to the TV’s input assignment and signal-format setting before changing other picture controls. A game may still need its own 120Hz or performance option enabled; the console-wide setting only permits the output.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to General, then TV & display options.
  3. Choose the highest resolution supported by the connected TV.
  4. Set the refresh-rate option to 120Hz when it is offered.
  5. Open 4K TV details to see which combinations the TV and connection report as supported.
  6. Review Video modes and enable HDR and variable-refresh options that the TV accepts.

If Xbox reports that 4K 120Hz or VRR is unavailable, use the same direct-TV test as with PS5. The console’s compatibility page reflects the negotiated HDMI link; it does not override a standard-bandwidth port or a cable that cannot carry the signal.

Enable HDR on both sides

HDR can require two separate permissions. First, enable HDR in the console’s video-output or video-mode settings. Second, check the TV’s picture or HDMI-input settings for an HDR control. Some televisions expose a separate HDR setting for each input, while others switch automatically after detecting HDR metadata.

Sony notes that not all 4K televisions support HDR. A display can therefore accept a 4K signal while remaining SDR. If the console’s HDR test is unavailable, confirm the TV’s model specifications and that the selected HDMI port is the one with HDR support.

Use a cable that can carry the signal

Use the cable supplied with the console when it is rated for the required mode, or use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120Hz. A cable can pass 4K 60Hz yet fail when bandwidth rises with 120Hz, HDR and other data. Keep the test path short and remove adapters while diagnosing a problem.

Replace the cable if the image drops out, the console repeatedly renegotiates resolution, or one feature disappears when another is enabled. Confirm that the cable is connected firmly at both ends; a partially seated plug can behave like a bandwidth limitation.

Why a PS5 or Xbox may show only 4K at 60Hz

The console is in the wrong HDMI socket

Move it to the input labeled for 4K 120Hz, VRR, 8K or gaming, then enable that input’s enhanced mode. Some TVs support 4K 120Hz and VRR on only one or two ports.

The input is still in standard mode

Reopen the per-input signal-format menu. A television can remember standard mode separately for each socket, so changing the setting on an unused HDMI input has no effect on the console.

An AV receiver or switch is negotiating a lower mode

Disconnect the receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch and connect the console straight to the TV. If 4K 120Hz and VRR then appear, check whether the intermediary’s HDMI specification, firmware and pass-through settings support the same combination. Route audio separately during testing if necessary.

The cable is not rated for 4K 120Hz

Substitute the console’s certified cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Test one variable at a time so a cable change is not confused with a menu change.

Firmware or model support is missing

Install current firmware for the TV and console, then power-cycle both devices after the update. Firmware can affect HDMI compatibility, but it cannot add a physical high-bandwidth port to a model that was not designed with one.

The game does not output 120Hz

System menus can report 120Hz support even when a particular game uses 60Hz. Check the game’s display or performance settings and its own documentation. Some games lower internal resolution to maintain a higher frame rate; that behavior is different from the HDMI link being limited to 60Hz.

How to compare TVs for console gaming

When choosing between models, compare the features below rather than relying on a generic “gaming TV” label:

  • Full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports: count how many inputs support the required signal and note their physical locations.
  • 4K at 120Hz: confirm that the specification applies to HDMI input, not only to the panel’s internal motion processing.
  • VRR support: check the supported VRR standards and operating range for the exact model.
  • HDR formats: verify which HDR formats the set accepts through the console’s HDMI inputs.
  • Game Mode and ALLM: determine whether low-latency switching is automatic or requires a manual picture-mode change.
  • Enhanced HDMI requirement: see whether a menu toggle must be enabled before 4K 120Hz, HDR or VRR becomes available.

Menu names, supported modes and port capabilities can vary by model and region. Use the manual for the exact model number rather than assuming that a feature listed for a series applies to every size or regional version.

A practical verification checklist

Work through this order so each test isolates one possible cause:

  1. Confirm that the TV, console and game are designed for the desired combination.
  2. Connect the console directly to the TV’s identified 4K 120Hz or VRR port.
  3. Enable the port’s enhanced or high-bandwidth signal format.
  4. Turn on Game Mode and the TV’s VRR control.
  5. Use the console’s resolution, 120Hz and HDR settings described above.
  6. Check the console’s video-information or 4K-details screen for the negotiated mode.
  7. Try the certified cable supplied with the console or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  8. Update TV and console firmware, then restart both.
  9. Reconnect a receiver or switch only after the direct path works, testing each device’s pass-through settings.

A successful 4K 120Hz link does not guarantee that every game will render native 4K, run at 120 frames per second or maintain VRR at all times. It confirms that the TV, console, cable and connection are configured to allow those modes when the software requests them.
