Then confirm the TV is sending audio to the speakers you intend to use. Headphones, Bluetooth audio, or an old sound-output selection can send sound somewhere else. Work through the checks below before assuming the TV needs repair.
1. Check volume and mute on the TV and source

Raise the TV’s volume and press its Mute button once. Check whether a mute icon appears or disappears.

If the picture comes from a cable box, streaming device, game console, or other connected source, check that device’s volume and mute settings too. The TV can be turned up while the source itself is muted or set to zero.

If convenient, switch to another app or input. If sound works there, the issue may be limited to the original source or its connection; this comparison narrows the problem but does not prove a particular cause.

LG’s support guidance includes TV mute or zero volume and external-device mute or zero volume among the checks for no sound. LG’s no-sound troubleshooting guide provides model-dependent details.
2. Choose the intended audio output
Look in the TV’s sound settings for a control labeled Sound Out, Speaker, or Audio Output. Select the TV’s internal speakers while testing them, or select the soundbar or receiver when that is the audio system you want to hear. A TV may still be set to an external speaker that is turned off or no longer connected.
Disconnect headphones and temporarily unpair or disconnect Bluetooth audio if either is in use. On applicable Sony models, connected headphones or Bluetooth devices can route sound away from the TV speakers or an ARC/eARC audio system. See the Sony Help Guide for “No sound but good picture”; the behavior and menu labels depend on the model.

3. Reseat the HDMI connection and restart the devices
If the silent content comes from an HDMI-connected box or console, unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Then restart the TV and the source device. LG recommends checking the connection and restarting devices as part of its no-audio troubleshooting.
Try another HDMI cable only if reseating does not help or the existing cable or connection appears damaged. Replacing a cable is a conditional test, not a necessary first step for every sound problem. LG’s no-audio guidance also covers checking external-speaker power, connection type, and source volume.
4. Check ARC or eARC when using a soundbar or receiver
Audio Return Channel (ARC) and enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) send TV audio to compatible external equipment over HDMI. For this connection to work, both the TV and the sound system must support the relevant feature, the cable must be connected to the ports labeled ARC or eARC, and the applicable audio-output and ARC/eARC settings must be enabled or configured appropriately. Setting names and paths differ across brands, models, regions, and software versions.

Confirm the soundbar or receiver is powered on and set to the correct input.

Check that the HDMI cable connects the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port to the matching port on the audio system.

In the TV’s sound settings, select the external audio system and check any ARC/eARC or HDMI-CEC options required by the devices.

If the devices allow it, check whether the external system supports the audio format used by the silent content. Format compatibility can matter even when other content plays.
Sony’s ARC/eARC no-sound guidance explains compatibility, port, settings, and audio-format checks. Roku’s HDMI-CEC and ARC setup instructions also note that available controls vary by TV brand and software.

5. Run the TV’s sound test if available
Look in the TV’s support, diagnostics, or sound settings for a feature called Sound Test or Sound Self-Diagnosis. Follow the on-screen instructions. A built-in test helps compare the TV’s own audio output with sound from an affected app or connected source, but the result alone does not establish the precise cause.

Use the comparisons to decide what to check next:

If the test and TV speakers produce sound but one HDMI source does not, focus on that source’s mute and volume, its input, and its HDMI connection.

If TV speakers work but a soundbar or receiver does not, focus on the external system’s power and input, the TV’s selected output, ARC/eARC ports and settings, and audio-format compatibility.

If the test is abnormal, or no sound returns after these checks, consult support for the exact TV model. A no-sound symptom by itself does not prove that a speaker or other component has failed.

LG describes its model-dependent sound self-diagnosis in its troubleshooting guidance. For other TVs, use the manual or manufacturer’s support page for the model and software version you have.
