Adjust the screen’s light output for your room, but leave Color, Tint, and detailed white balance at their defaults unless you have a measured reason to change them. The exact menu labels vary by TV model.
Start with the picture mode, not individual color controls
Open the TV’s Picture menu and select Filmmaker Mode if available. Otherwise, try Movie, Cinema, Professional, or the manufacturer’s closest accuracy-focused preset. A picture mode changes several things together, potentially including color temperature, white balance, and motion processing, so it is a more reliable starting point than trying to correct an overly blue or vivid image one slider at a time.

Modes called Standard, Vivid, or Dynamic may make a showroom display look punchier, but that does not mean they reproduce the intended image more faithfully. Names and behavior vary by manufacturer, so judge the available mode by the result rather than assuming every TV uses the same labels.

Choose a warm color temperature and give your eyes time to adjust
Within the accurate picture preset, choose the Warm color-temperature option, or the closest equivalent. TV and film images are generally mastered around a 6500 K white point. A cooler setting can add a visible blue cast; Warm may initially seem yellow or red if you are used to that cooler look. Watch for a while before deciding whether you prefer it.

RTINGS uses 6500 K as the current TV and film color-temperature reference in its color-accuracy methodology. That is a useful target for accuracy, not a requirement that every viewer must prefer the same appearance.
Set screen light output for the room
Adjust how much light the screen emits to suit your room and comfort. This is different from changing the TV’s signal-brightness or black-level control, which can crush shadow detail or make blacks look gray when set incorrectly.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Unless there is an obvious problem, leave Color and Tint/Hue at the accurate preset’s defaults. These controls are difficult to set reliably by eye, and old blue-filter adjustment methods are not dependable for modern displays. The RTINGS calibration guide advises against changing white balance and color-space settings without specialized equipment.

- Improved accuracy and stability - The fourth-generation Spyders have double-shielded color filters for even closer match to CIE color standards and improved long term stability. Average accuracy is up 26% and consistency between Spyder units is 19% better.
- Fast Re-calibration Assistant - The ReCAL feature makes it quick and easy to recalibrate your display to compensate for changes over time.
Detailed white-balance values from a review or another owner’s TV are not a safe shortcut: manufacturing variation means the same model can need different corrections from one unit to another. RTINGS’ SDR pre-calibration score assigns its own weights of 40% to white-balance dE, 40% to color dE, and 20% to color temperature; these are RTINGS’ test-score weights, not a universal formula for image quality.
Use separate settings for SDR and HDR
Many TVs save picture settings separately by mode, input, or app, and may switch settings automatically when HDR content starts. Check the picture preset while viewing the type of content you want to adjust; an SDR change may not carry over to HDR.

For SDR, gamma around 2.2 is a useful reference in an average-lit room. A brighter room or a dark-room setup may call for a different gamma option. Do not apply an SDR gamma target to HDR as if the two formats used identical settings.

Keep sharpness modest: setting it too high can emphasize outlines without adding real detail. Processing features such as noise reduction, motion smoothing, and contrast enhancement vary by TV. Reduce or disable a feature only if you can see that it changes the source in a way you dislike; there is no single processing setting that is right for every model or program.

Know what you can and cannot fix by eye
Basic setup is often enough to make a TV look more natural. Test patterns can help check signal levels and reveal visible clipping, but they cannot make an unaided visual adjustment of white balance precise. For measured calibration, a compatible colorimeter or spectrophotometer and appropriate software are needed; a professional calibration is an optional route for viewers seeking that level of precision, not a prerequisite for sensible everyday settings.
RTINGS’ stated guide for noticeable white-balance and color dE differences classifies values under 1 as unnoticeable, 1–3 as noticeable to professionals, 3–5 as noticeable to enthusiasts, and 5 or higher as noticeable to everyone. This is RTINGS’ perceptual guide, not a universal law of human vision. Its SDR color-accuracy methodology describes the lab measurements behind its own results.
