The best TV is the one that fits your room, viewing habits, devices and budget—not the one with the biggest discount or the most impressive label. Before buying, check viewing distance, screen technology, gaming support, ports, sound and the exact model number. Features and availability vary by country and model, so verify specifications for the TV you plan to purchase.
How do you choose the right TV size for your room?
Choosing by price or screen size alone can leave you with a TV that feels too small, too large or awkwardly placed. Measure the distance from your usual seat to the screen and plan where the TV will sit or hang, including whether furniture or sightlines affect placement.

ENERGY STAR suggests dividing viewing distance by two to estimate a UHD screen’s diagonal size. Treat this as a starting-point heuristic, not a universal rule: viewing preference, room layout and screen placement matter too. LG’s India buying guide gives separate indicative ranges based on room width, but room dimensions and measurement conventions differ. Use any such range as a rough reference, then consider what feels comfortable in your space.
Check line of sight and mounting height before settling on a size. A screen that fits a wall may still be uncomfortable to watch if it sits too high or is difficult to see from the main seats.

Are OLED, QLED and Mini LED quality rankings?
No. Technology labels describe different approaches or product categories; they do not, by themselves, establish which TV will look best in your room. Ask what you watch, when you watch and how bright the room is before comparing models.
OLED
ENERGY STAR describes OLED as using self-emissive pixels, which can produce deep blacks and strong contrast. It also notes potential tradeoffs: OLED TVs can cost more and may be less bright than LED LCD TVs. Those characteristics make OLED a possible fit for some viewing conditions, not a default choice for everyone.

LED LCD and Mini LED
Compare the exact model’s specifications and credible model-level evidence rather than assuming a label settles picture quality. Samsung’s 2026 Canada lineup markets OLED and Mini LED features for different situations, but that is manufacturer information; it is not independent comparative testing, and features can differ by model and region.
Also avoid treating 4K as a guarantee of a better-looking picture. ENERGY STAR defines UHD/4K as 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, but resolution is only one part of the experience. HDR format support, panel behavior, the content itself and room lighting also affect what you see. Check which formats the exact TV supports and whether the content you watch is available in them.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz for gaming?
Not every buyer needs them. They matter most when your console or PC can send a supported high-resolution, high-refresh-rate signal and you want the corresponding motion or gaming features. Do not buy on an “HDMI 2.1” or “120Hz” label alone: confirm the capabilities of the exact TV and the particular inputs you will use.
- Native refresh rate: Check whether the panel supports the resolution and refresh combination you want, such as 4K at 120Hz. ENERGY STAR recommends at least 120Hz on its buying page, but that is its guidance, not a requirement for every household or type of viewing.
- VRR and ALLM: Look for variable refresh rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) if they suit your source device and games. Confirm which inputs support them.
- Input performance: Check model-specific information for the gaming response and modes that matter to you. The cited buying guidance does not establish comparative input-performance results for 2026 models.
- Port-specific support: Verify which HDMI ports support the resolution, refresh rate and features you intend to use. A label on the TV does not guarantee that every port supports every capability.
Philips’ UK-facing guide, dated 16 September 2026, says HDMI 2.1 supports data rates up to 48Gb/s and identifies 4K at 120Hz, VRR and ALLM among the features it enables in supported setups. These are standards and feature statements from a manufacturer guide, not a guarantee that every HDMI 2.1-labeled TV offers all of them on every input.

How many HDMI ports should you check for?
Count the devices you will connect before choosing a set. A console, soundbar and cable box can use three HDMI inputs, a common example noted by ENERGY STAR. Add other planned sources to your own count, and check whether the ports have the capabilities your devices need.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm the number of HDMI inputs and which port supports each relevant feature.
- If you plan to connect a soundbar, check whether the TV has eARC and whether that connection suits your setup.
- If wall mounting, check where the ports sit and whether they will remain accessible.
Port count alone does not establish compatibility. Match the TV’s port specifications to your devices, intended video formats and audio connection.

What should you check about sound and smart-TV software?
Sound
Built-in speakers may be adequate for some rooms and viewers, while others may want more capable audio. ENERGY STAR and LG describe a soundbar as an optional way to improve sound when flat-panel speakers are limiting; it is not a requirement for every TV buyer. If you plan to add one, account for its HDMI input needs and check the TV’s eARC support against the soundbar’s requirements.
Apps and updates
Check whether the smart-TV interface is comfortable to use, whether it has the apps you rely on and what the manufacturer says about software updates. Support duration and app availability vary by model and region, so confirm them in current product documentation rather than assuming that all TVs in a lineup are equivalent.
How can you avoid buying the wrong TV on sale?
Compare the exact model number—not just the brand, screen size or product-family name—before treating a discount as a bargain. ENERGY STAR cautions that some Black Friday or Cyber Monday derivative models may omit features found on other versions. That warning applies to some models, not every sale TV, and does not establish that a discounted set is poor value.
Recommended Free Tools
- Record the full model number shown on the product listing or label.
- Compare that model’s screen, gaming features, HDMI ports, HDR support, software and audio connections with the alternatives you are considering.
- Check the model’s specifications and documentation for your country and screen size; features can vary even within a product family.
- Compare the confirmed features with your own requirements and the price. Do not let the size of a discount substitute for a model-to-model comparison.
No current prices or sale offers are established here. Verify the exact configuration and terms with the seller before purchasing.
Quick Recap
What is the final pre-purchase checklist?
- Measure your viewing distance and plan the TV’s placement and mounting height.
- Choose display technology for your room and viewing habits, not as a ranking inferred from marketing labels.
- For gaming, confirm native refresh support, VRR, ALLM, input performance and the capabilities of the specific HDMI ports you will use.
- Count your devices, then check HDMI inputs, eARC and port accessibility.
- Check HDR formats and smart-TV apps or update information for the exact model.
- Decide whether the built-in sound meets your needs or whether an optional soundbar makes sense.
- Compare the full model number and specifications before deciding that a sale price represents good value.
