The original television carton with all of its fitted inserts is the safest default. If that packaging is missing or incomplete, use a specialty, expandable TV moving box with the correct foam corner pieces and a verified fit. A plain moving box is not equivalent unless you add internal support that prevents the television from shifting. Whichever box you use, keep the package upright, stabilize it in the vehicle, and follow the television maker’s manual when its instructions are more specific.
Why the original TV box usually wins
A television carton supplied for a particular model is designed around that television’s dimensions and vulnerable areas. U-Haul describes the original packaging as designed to protect the TV and as a perfect fit, but that advantage assumes you still have the appropriate molded or shaped inserts. The cardboard shell by itself is not the same protective system.

Those inserts hold the screen and frame away from the carton walls, distribute contact at the corners, and limit movement. They also preserve the orientation intended by the manufacturer. Before reusing the carton, open it completely and confirm that every insert, spacer, top piece and bottom piece is present and undamaged. Check that the television sits in the same position shown in the manufacturer’s packing instructions.

The meaningful differences are not the words printed on the outside of the carton. They are the fit, the presence of fitted corner or original inserts, control of movement inside the box, and the ability to keep the package upright and secured. No measured damage-rate comparison was established for these options, so a percentage reduction or failure ranking would be misleading.
Check the television before choosing a box
Start with the television’s own instructions. Look for sections covering removal of the stand, lifting points, packing, storage and transport. If the manual tells you to remove legs or a pedestal, follow that sequence rather than forcing the hardware. Keep screws, the remote and cables together in a labelled bag so they do not press against the screen or disappear into other moving cartons.
Measure the screen diagonally in the same way television sizes are normally stated: from one display corner to the opposite display corner. Also measure the television’s depth, including any rear housing that will sit inside the carton. Do not select a specialty kit from the diagonal measurement alone. U-Haul’s guidance says to check depth against the kit’s constraints, and its listed screen ranges and dimensions apply to its products rather than to every TV box on the market.
Before buying or opening a kit, compare your measurements with the current specifications for that exact box. Product contents and availability can change. The U-Haul expandable kit is described as a nested or two-box design with foam corner pieces; verify that the version you obtain includes the pieces and size range you need.
- Record the screen’s diagonal measurement.
- Record the television’s maximum depth at the points that will contact the box.
- Check whether the stand or legs must be removed according to the manual.
- Confirm the kit’s stated size range, depth limit and included corner protection.
- Allow room for the specified inserts or corner foam without pressing on the display.
Step-by-step: packing the original carton
- Prepare a clear work area. Use a clean, level surface large enough to lay out the carton, inserts, stand hardware and cables. Keep the display face away from hard or gritty surfaces.
- Read the model manual. Identify the approved lifting points and the instructions for removing the stand. If the manual says to keep a component attached, do not improvise a different disassembly.
- Remove and secure accessories. Place the stand or legs, screws, remote and cords together in a small labelled package. Keep that package separate from the screen so it cannot rub against the panel.
- Inspect the inserts. Match the bottom, side, top and corner pieces to the carton. Replace a missing or crushed piece with a properly designed alternative rather than assuming the bare carton remains a perfect fit.
- Seat the television as shown by the manufacturer. The frame should rest in its intended supports, with no part of the display bearing against bare cardboard. Do not force the set into an insert that has warped or shrunk.
- Close the carton in the prescribed order. Ensure the top protection is fully engaged before taping. Use packing tape suitable for cartons and seal all required flaps.
- Mark orientation and handling. Add clear “upright” markings if they are not already present, then keep those markings visible when the carton is loaded.
If the original carton is damaged, has lost its structural strength or no longer holds the inserts firmly, treat it as incomplete packaging. A specialty kit is a safer fallback than relying on the old shell alone.
Step-by-step: using a specialty TV moving box
A specialty kit is useful when the manufacturer’s carton is gone, but it is not a universal-size solution. U-Haul describes an expandable two-box kit that uses foam corner pieces. Assembly details in its setup guide date from October 3, 2016, so inspect the current kit’s instructions and contents rather than assuming every revision is identical.

- Confirm fit before packing. Compare the television’s diagonal and depth with the exact kit’s current limits. If the set exceeds the depth allowance, choose another solution; do not compress the carton around it.
- Build the nested cartons as directed. The expandable design is intended to adjust to the television’s size. Follow the kit’s flap and overlap sequence so the two cartons function as one reinforced package.
- Install the foam corners. Place each corner piece on the television in the positions shown by the kit instructions. The foam should protect the frame and keep it from contacting the carton.
- Center the protected television. Check all sides for a consistent, supported fit. The display should not touch the cardboard, and the corner pieces should not be so tight that they put pressure on the panel.
- Fill remaining voids. U-Haul’s moving guidance names furniture pads or towels for filling a gap and reducing movement. Use soft, clean material that cannot scratch the screen. Do not use loose hard objects as spacers.
- Close and tape the box. Seal the carton according to the kit’s instructions. Test it gently by holding the closed package steady; if the television slides or rattles, reopen it and improve the internal support.
- Get assistance for a large or awkward set. U-Haul recommends partner assistance for larger screens. Coordinate the lift, keep the carton upright and avoid gripping the display itself.
Corner foam and void filling solve different problems. The corner pieces provide defined contact and clearance; towels or furniture pads address open space that would otherwise let the television move. A blanket wrapped around the set without corner support is not established as equivalent to a fitted kit.
What to do if a plain moving box is your only option
A standard moving box does not come with the fitted arrangement described for an original TV carton or a specialty television kit. The evidence does not support treating an unpadded standard box as equally protective. If circumstances leave no alternative, the goal is to create a stable internal system rather than simply placing the television inside a larger carton.
- Choose a carton that allows protective material around the television without forcing the flaps closed.
- Use rigid, clean supports outside the screen area to keep the frame from touching the walls. Do not let improvised supports press directly on the display.
- Protect corners and fill every remaining void with soft padding so the television cannot slide, rotate or rattle.
- Keep accessories in a separate labelled package instead of allowing them to occupy the same space as the panel.
- Seal the carton securely and test for internal movement before loading it.
These steps reduce loose movement, but they do not turn a generic box into a model-fitted package. If the set is valuable, unusually large or difficult to support without contact, postpone the move until you can obtain a correctly sized specialty kit or another fitted solution.
Keep the packed TV upright during the move
U-Haul’s moving guidance says to keep the television box upright in transit. An LG manual surfaced for a particular model gives the same orientation instruction. Because handling requirements vary by model, your own manual takes precedence, but laying a television flat should never be an assumption.
Upright handling is only useful if the carton cannot fall or slide. In a moving truck or van, place the TV package between sturdy, flat objects that support it without leaning into the screen area. U-Haul also suggests tying the box to truck rails. Use tie-downs to prevent movement, not to crush the carton; inspect the carton after tightening and make sure the straps are not deforming the display enclosure.

- Set the carton on a stable, level surface with the upright markings visible.
- Brace it between sturdy flat items or secure it to appropriate truck rails.
- Keep sharp tools, loose hardware and unrestrained furniture away from the carton.
- Recheck the restraints after the first part of the journey and after any major stop.
Do not stack heavy boxes on top of the TV carton. A second person should help with large or awkward televisions so the package remains vertical while it is moved through doorways and around ramps.

Moving a TV is not the same as shipping one
UPS’s “How To Ship a TV” instructions are U.S. shipping guidance. They can provide useful packaging context, but they should not be presented as a universal rule for a household move. Shipping exposes a package to a different handling chain, so follow the carrier’s current requirements if you are sending the television rather than carrying it in your own vehicle.
For a household move, the priorities established by the moving guidance are fit, corner protection, void filling, upright orientation and restraint in the vehicle. For a shipment, add the carrier’s packaging, labelling and acceptance requirements to those priorities. In either case, the television manufacturer’s model-specific instructions remain the first reference for lifting and packing.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the original carton without its inserts
Symptom: The television fits inside the cardboard but can touch the walls or move when the carton is tilted.
Correction: Do not treat the empty carton as the original protective system. Find the missing inserts or switch to a correctly sized specialty kit with corner foam and appropriate void filling.
Buying by screen diagonal alone
Symptom: The diagonal measurement appears within the kit range, but the rear housing makes the set too deep.
Correction: Measure depth and compare it with the exact kit’s stated limit before packing. U-Haul’s size ranges and dimensions are product-specific, not a universal standard.

Leaving space inside the box
Symptom: The carton sounds loose or the television shifts when moved a short distance.

Wrapping without supporting corners
Symptom: A blanket or wrap surrounds the television, but the frame can still contact the carton.

Transporting the box flat
Symptom: The carton is placed horizontally because that seems easier to stack.

Over-tightening tie-downs
Symptom: Straps bow the carton inward or leave visible pressure marks.
Correction: Release and reposition the restraints so they stop sliding without crushing the box. Support the package with stable flat objects as well as, or instead of, excessive strap tension.

- Do you have the original carton and every fitted insert? If yes, use it after confirming the manual’s packing and orientation instructions.
- Is the original packaging incomplete or unavailable? Measure the screen diagonally and the television’s depth, then select a specialty expandable kit whose current specifications fit both.
- Can the television be supported without movement? Install corner protection and fill voids. If it still shifts, do not transport it yet.
- Can the vehicle keep the carton upright and restrained? Arrange bracing or tie-down points before loading the television.
- Are you shipping rather than moving it yourself? Apply the carrier’s current shipping requirements in addition to the packing and model instructions.
This path deliberately favors a fitted package. A generic carton becomes a last-resort option because its safety depends on a support system that the box itself does not provide.

Can I move a TV using the original box if the inserts are missing?
Not as though it were complete original packaging. The carton was designed with its fitted protective pieces, so replace the missing support or use a specialty TV moving kit that fits the measured screen and depth.
Can I lay a TV down flat while moving it?
General moving guidance and a surfaced LG manual say to keep the television upright. Check your own model’s manual, then plan the vehicle so the carton remains vertical and restrained.
Are expandable TV moving boxes one universal size?
No. The expandable design and screen ranges described by U-Haul apply to that product. Measure both diagonal screen size and depth, and verify the current specifications for the exact kit before buying.
Does a furniture pad replace the foam corners?
