An old laptop can do two useful jobs at once: stream PC games to other screens with Sunshine and Moonlight, and filter DNS for your whole network with Pi-hole. Whether yours can do both depends on three things the title can’t tell you: its GPU’s video encoder, its operating system, and how it connects to your router. This guide shows how each role works, what to check before you commit, and the one trade-off that comes with combining them.
How the two roles fit together
They solve different problems and share almost nothing except the machine and the network cable.

- Sunshine is the host. The project’s own words: “Sunshine is a self-hosted game stream host for Moonlight.” It runs on the PC that runs your games. Moonlight is the client app on the TV, phone, handheld or second computer that displays the stream. (Sunshine documentation)
- Pi-hole is a DNS service. Its documentation calls it “a DNS sinkhole that protects your devices from unwanted content, without installing any client-side software.” It answers name lookups from your devices and refuses the ones on its blocklists. (Pi-hole overview)
Because one machine hosts both, the laptop becomes a single point of dependence. That is a practical inference from how the services work, not something I measured: if the laptop is off, asleep or unplugged from the network, streaming stops, and any device still pointed at it for DNS may lose name resolution until you change the setting or add a fallback.
Check the laptop before you start
Streaming requirements (Sunshine)
Sunshine supports hardware encoding on AMD, Intel and Nvidia GPUs, and also offers software encoding. Its published minimums, from the v2025.921.42242 documentation, are:

The project labels this table a work in progress and says not to buy hardware based on it alone. Treat it as a screening list, not a performance guarantee. Resolution, frame rate and how demanding the game is will decide whether your laptop holds up, and no figures here test any specific model. (Sunshine documentation)
Practical checks: identify the exact CPU and GPU in your OS’s system information, confirm the GPU is from one of the three listed vendors, and confirm your OS version is on the supported list. Laptops with both integrated and dedicated graphics are worth a closer look, since the game and the encoder need to be running on a GPU Sunshine can use.

Ad-blocking requirements (Pi-hole)
Pi-hole’s needs are modest, but it has one firm requirement: a stable address. Its prerequisites say a static IP or a DHCP reservation on your router is suitable. Without one, devices could be told to use a DNS address that later changes. (Pi-hole prerequisites)

Set up game streaming
- Install Sunshine on the laptop and open its configuration web interface to finish setup.
- Install Moonlight on the client device.
- Make sure both are on the same local network, then pair them. If the host doesn’t appear automatically in Moonlight, the Moonlight guide allows you to add it manually by IP address.
- Test a game or app on the local network first. Only consider streaming over the internet after local streaming works.

Wired or wireless
For 4K, Sunshine recommends Cat5e Ethernet or better at both the host and the client. Moonlight’s guide recommends a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 connection for the client and highly recommends a wired connection from the host PC to the router. These are project recommendations, not measured results. If your old laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is the usual workaround, but check that it is compatible with your model and OS. A Cat5e cable is the inexpensive part of the fix.

Compare setups on your own network using these factors: target resolution, frame rate, host encoder support, whether the client can decode the stream, wired versus wireless path, and the latency you actually feel.

Set up network-wide ad blocking
- Give the laptop a stable address, ideally a DHCP reservation in your router so the address is managed in one place.
- Install Pi-hole following the Getting Started page.
- Complete the post-install step: the network doesn’t use Pi-hole until devices are told to. Either set your router’s DNS to the laptop’s address, so every device inherits it, or set DNS on individual devices.
If you want Pi-hole to act as the DHCP server instead of the router, the prerequisites list additional ports, and that change affects every device on the network. Only do it if you understand your router’s DHCP settings, and disable the router’s DHCP at the same time so two servers don’t compete. Pi-hole is designed for local-network use; its documentation describes firewall rules meant to keep it from being reachable from the wider internet. (Pi-hole prerequisites, Getting Started)
What “ad blocking” really means here
Pi-hole blocks at the domain level. If an ad is served from a listed domain and the device asks Pi-hole to resolve it, the request goes nowhere. The documentation mentions this working in some ad-laden mobile apps and smart TVs. It does not claim to remove every ad. Ads served from the same domain as the content, and devices using a different resolver, will not be filtered. (Pi-hole overview)
Why combining them needs planning
- Keep the laptop plugged in and set to avoid sleeping, since both services need it awake. Check your OS’s power settings.
- Reserve its address so Moonlight’s manual IP entry and every device’s DNS setting keep pointing to the right place.
- Consider listing a secondary DNS only if you accept that some queries will then bypass Pi-hole; the choice is a trade-off between resilience and filtering.
- Remember that gaming load and DNS service share one CPU, though DNS lookups are small by comparison. No measurements of the combined load were available for any particular laptop.
The Bottom Line
Treat the old laptop as a candidate, not a certainty. If it has a GPU encoder Sunshine supports, a supported OS and a wired path to your router, it can reasonably host both jobs. Check those three things first, reserve its IP, and test streaming locally before you point your whole network’s DNS at it.
