Turn On Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11: Complete Guide

To enable Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, open Settings and more (⋯) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services. Under Security, switch on Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites. Leave Use current service provider selected unless you have a trusted DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) resolver URI and a reason to use it.

What Secure DNS changes in Edge

When Edge opens a website, it first needs to translate the site’s hostname, such as example.com, into an IP address. That translation is a DNS lookup. With Secure DNS enabled, Edge sends the lookup to a DNS resolver through HTTPS instead of sending a conventional DNS request in clear text.

Microsoft describes the feature this way: “Secure DNS performs this lookup using a service over an HTTPS connection to the DNS service provider.” HTTPS supplies TLS confidentiality and integrity for the DNS message while it travels between Edge and the resolver. Someone monitoring the local network therefore has a much harder time reading or altering those individual DNS requests.

Secure DNS is not a replacement for a full-device privacy tool. It does not encrypt the rest of your browser traffic, conceal your IP address from websites, or prevent the DNS resolver from seeing the queries it handles. The feature protects the DNS portion of a connection; the website’s own HTTPS protection is still responsible for the page, files, forms and other content that follow.

Enable Secure DNS in Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge. Start the browser normally in Windows 11.
  2. Open Settings. Select Settings and more, the three-dot button in the upper-right corner, then choose Settings.
  3. Open privacy controls. In the left navigation, select Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Find the Security section. Scroll down until you see Security.
  5. Turn on Secure DNS. Enable Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites.
  6. Choose the resolver mode. Keep Use current service provider selected for the default behavior, or select the option for a specific provider and enter its valid DoH resolver URI.

You can open the same Edge settings page directly by entering edge://settings/privacy in the address bar. The wording can move slightly between Edge releases, but the setting remains under Privacy, search, and services > Security.

Which provider option should you use?

Edge presents two practical choices. The right one depends on whether you want the browser to follow the DNS service already supplied by your network or to use a particular encrypted resolver.

Choice How Edge resolves names Fallback if DoH fails What you must provide Important decision factors
Use current service provider Edge attempts to use the DNS service currently configured for the network, using Secure DNS when that service supports the required connection. If the secure connection fails, Edge may retry through the current provider with ordinary, unencrypted DNS. Nothing beyond enabling the toggle. Convenient and usually compatible with the network, but a failed secure lookup can fall back to plaintext DNS.
Use a specific provider Edge sends lookups to the resolver represented by the selected provider or custom DoH endpoint. According to Microsoft’s documentation, Edge does not fall back to a regular DNS lookup when a specifically selected secure provider fails. A provider selection or a valid DoH resolver URI supplied by that provider. More predictable encryption behavior, but the resolver operator’s privacy, logging, geography and reliability policies matter. Organization policy can also restrict the choice.

The provider choice changes who receives your DNS requests. A current-provider configuration generally keeps that responsibility with the DNS service supplied by your network. A custom configuration moves it to the operator of the endpoint you enter. Review that operator’s published privacy and logging policy before committing to a custom URI; the encrypted connection protects the request in transit, not from the resolver itself.

How to enter a custom DoH resolver

Use a custom endpoint only when you have the exact URI from the resolver’s own documentation. DoH endpoints are not interchangeable with ordinary DNS server addresses. An address such as an IPv4 or IPv6 DNS server is not, by itself, a valid HTTPS resolver template.

  1. Complete the path above to Privacy, search, and services > Security.
  2. Turn on Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites.
  3. Select the option to choose a specific provider or enter a custom provider.
  4. Paste the resolver’s complete DoH URI exactly as documented. Preserve the scheme, hostname, path and any required template syntax.
  5. Save or leave the page after Edge accepts the endpoint, then open a new tab and test several sites.

If Edge rejects the value, the URI is probably malformed, not a DoH endpoint, or blocked by a policy. Do not guess at a replacement path. Obtain the endpoint from the resolver operator or return to Use current service provider.

Understand the fallback behavior before choosing

Fallback is the main operational difference between the two modes. In current-provider mode, Edge can retry a failed secure lookup using the same provider’s ordinary DNS service. That can keep a site reachable during a temporary DoH outage, but the retry is not encrypted. The hostname may therefore be visible to a network observer during that failed attempt.

When you explicitly select a secure provider, Microsoft says Edge does not perform that regular-DNS retry if secure resolution fails. A site can consequently fail to resolve until the secure endpoint becomes available, you choose another endpoint, or you switch back to the current-provider mode. This is a deliberate trade-off: stronger consistency about encrypted DNS versus a greater chance of a successful lookup during provider problems.

Choosing for a home connection

Current-provider mode is the least disruptive starting point for a home network. It requires no URI and lets Edge use the DNS arrangement already working for the connection. Move to a specific provider when you have evaluated the operator and want to avoid the documented plaintext fallback.

Choosing for travel or restrictive networks

Networks in hotels, cafés and other managed locations can impose their own DNS behavior. A custom endpoint may be unreachable or filtered, while current-provider mode may work immediately. Test the mode before relying on it for a trip, and remember that Secure DNS does not bypass every network restriction.

Secure DNS and Windows 11 encrypted DNS are separate

Windows 11 has its own encrypted-DNS controls in the operating system’s network settings. Edge also has the browser-level Secure DNS setting described in this guide. They are separate configuration layers.

  • Changing Edge’s setting controls DNS lookups made by that Edge installation.
  • Changing Windows 11’s network setting controls the operating-system DNS client and applications that use it.
  • Turning on one layer does not automatically tell you whether the other layer is enabled, disabled or managed.

If your goal is to protect DNS for every application, inspect Windows 11’s network configuration as well as Edge. If your goal is specifically to change how Edge resolves website names, use the Edge setting. Keeping the two layers conceptually separate makes troubleshooting much easier: a problem in another application may be outside Edge’s control, and an Edge-specific policy may leave the Windows 11 client unchanged.

What Secure DNS does not hide

Secure DNS protects the DNS request between Edge and the chosen resolver with HTTPS. It does not provide all of the protections people sometimes associate with a VPN or an anonymizing service.

  • It does not encrypt every connection. Page content, downloads and other traffic use their own protocols and protections.
  • It does not hide your IP address. Websites and other services can still receive the network address used to connect to them.
  • It does not make the resolver blind. The resolver must process the hostname request, so its handling and retention practices matter.
  • It does not guarantee access. A network can block an endpoint, and a specifically selected provider can fail without a plaintext retry.
  • It does not override organizational controls. Policies on a managed computer can disable or enforce the setting.

Use Secure DNS for the problem it solves: reducing local-network observation and tampering of DNS lookups. Do not describe it as complete browsing anonymity or as encryption for all browser traffic.

Why the Secure DNS toggle is missing, locked or keeps changing

On an organization-managed computer, Edge can receive administrative policies that control Secure DNS. Microsoft documents two relevant policy settings: DnsOverHttpsTemplates, which accepts one or more resolver URI templates, and DnsOverHttpsMode, which determines the operating mode. When DnsOverHttpsMode is set to secure, a non-empty template is required. Microsoft lists Windows Edge support for this policy from version 83 onward.

If the control is absent

The browser may be managed and the administrator may have removed the user-facing choice, or the interface may be displayed differently by the installed Edge release. Check whether Windows or Edge identifies the device as managed. If it is a work or school computer, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the control is visible but disabled

A policy can enforce a mode or resolver and prevent local changes. The lock is an administrative boundary, not an indication that your Windows 11 installation is damaged. Ask the organization which resolver and mode are required.

If your choice reverts after restart

A policy refresh can overwrite a personal setting. Record the mode and any displayed resolver, then ask the administrator whether DnsOverHttpsMode or DnsOverHttpsTemplates is being applied. Repeatedly changing the toggle will not defeat an enforced policy.

Troubleshoot websites that stop resolving

Confirm the setting and endpoint

  1. Return to edge://settings/privacy.
  2. Under Security, verify that Secure DNS is still on.
  3. If a custom provider is selected, compare the entered URI character for character with the provider’s published endpoint.
  4. Temporarily select Use current service provider and test the same site.

If current-provider mode works but the custom mode does not, the custom endpoint may be unavailable, blocked by the network or incorrectly entered. Correct the URI or use the current provider while you investigate.

Check for the expected fallback

Do not assume that a specific provider will quietly fall back to ordinary DNS. Microsoft’s documented behavior is that it will not. A resolution failure in that mode is therefore a useful signal to check the endpoint, network reachability and policy rather than waiting for an unencrypted retry.

Consider captive portals

Public Wi-Fi often requires a sign-in page before normal browsing works. Secure DNS can be enabled while the network still requires that portal. If the sign-in page does not appear, connect according to the location’s instructions or temporarily use the network’s normal configuration until access is established.

Separate Edge problems from Windows problems

If other applications also fail to resolve names, investigate the Windows 11 network DNS configuration or the network itself. If only Edge is affected, focus on its provider selection, policy state and custom URI. This distinction prevents changing system-wide settings to fix a browser-only configuration.

When to turn Secure DNS off

Disabling the feature can be reasonable for a controlled diagnostic test, a network that requires its own DNS interception, or an organization that instructs users to use ordinary DNS. To test, return to Privacy, search, and services > Security and switch off Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites. Re-enable it after the test if encrypted DNS is part of your privacy plan.

Do not leave it off merely because a custom resolver failed. First try current-provider mode, verify the endpoint and check whether a policy or captive portal is involved. Turning off the browser feature removes the HTTPS protection for Edge’s DNS lookups; it does not repair an unavailable resolver.

Practical setup checklist

  • Open Edge settings through edge://settings/privacy or the three-dot menu.
  • Use the exact path Privacy, search, and services > Security.
  • Enable Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites.
  • Start with Use current service provider unless you have a documented reason and valid URI for another resolver.
  • Remember that current-provider mode can retry with unencrypted DNS after a secure failure.
  • Remember that a specifically selected provider does not receive that regular-DNS fallback according to Microsoft’s documentation.
  • Review the selected resolver’s privacy and logging policy.
  • On a work or school device, expect administrative policy to control the setting.
  • Treat Windows 11 encrypted DNS and Edge Secure DNS as separate layers.
  • Test several websites after changing the mode, including one you do not routinely visit.
