To enable JavaScript in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, open Settings, go to Privacy, search, and services, choose Site permissions, open All permissions, select JavaScript, and switch on Allowed (recommended). Return to the problem website and reload it. If the switch is unavailable, a work, school, or other device-management policy may control it. If the switch is already on, Edge’s Enhanced security—particularly Strict mode—may be preventing part of the site from running.
What JavaScript does in Edge
JavaScript is the browser technology that lets websites respond to actions, update content without a full page change, validate forms, display interactive menus, and run web applications. Microsoft states that JavaScript is supported in the Microsoft Edge web browser, including Edge on Windows 11.

A message such as “JavaScript is disabled” usually means the site could not run a script it needs. The cause may be the browser’s JavaScript permission, an organization policy that overrides your preference, or Edge’s Enhanced security feature restricting script execution. These are separate controls, so turning on the permission does not always resolve every site problem.

Enable JavaScript in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11
The labels below follow Microsoft’s documented Edge path. Edge updates can change the appearance of a page slightly, but the permission remains in the Privacy, search, and services area.
- Open Microsoft Edge. Start Edge from the Windows 11 Start menu, taskbar, or another shortcut.
- Open the More menu. Select the three-dot More (…) button in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- Open Settings. Choose Settings from the menu.
- Open privacy controls. In the Settings sidebar, select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open site permissions. Select Site permissions. Microsoft may describe this area as site permissions under Privacy, search, and services.
- Show every permission. Select All permissions.
- Open the JavaScript control. Select JavaScript from the list of permissions.
- Allow JavaScript. Turn on Allowed (recommended). The switch should show that the permission is enabled.
- Reload the website. Return to the tab that reported the error and reload the page. A reload makes the site request its scripts again using the new permission.
That is the complete user-side procedure. You do not need to install an extension or change Windows 11 system files to enable this Edge permission.
Confirm that the change took effect
After you turn on the setting, remain on the JavaScript permissions page long enough to verify that Allowed (recommended) is enabled, then return to the affected tab. Reload the page rather than relying on the copy already displayed in the tab.

- If the site still reports a script problem, leave the permission enabled and investigate Edge’s Enhanced security setting.
- If the control was visible but could not be changed, check whether the Windows 11 device is managed by an organization.
A site can continue to fail after permission is enabled because permission and execution protections are different Edge settings. Do not repeatedly toggle the same switch when the symptom points to one of those other controls.
When the JavaScript switch is missing or locked
On a personal computer, the JavaScript control is normally available for you to change. Microsoft warns that an administrative setting can disable JavaScript or control the permission. This is common on work, school, and other managed Windows 11 devices, where an organization’s policy takes precedence over an individual browser preference.
How to recognize policy control
- The JavaScript page opens, but the Allowed (recommended) switch is unavailable, dimmed, or cannot be moved.
- The setting appears to change briefly and then returns to its previous state.
- The browser displays a management notice or the computer belongs to an employer, school, library, or other organization.
What to do on a managed device
- Do not attempt to bypass the policy. It is applied intentionally by the organization that manages the device.
- Record the website that requires JavaScript and the exact message it displays.
- Contact your organization’s administrator, help desk, or IT support team and ask whether the Edge JavaScript policy can be changed for that site or device.
- Explain that the permission is controlled administratively if the support team asks why you cannot change it yourself.
An administrator may decide that scripts should remain blocked. In that case, only the administrator can determine whether enabling the permission is appropriate under the organization’s security rules.

JavaScript is allowed, but the website still does not work
When Allowed (recommended) is already on, Microsoft identifies Edge’s Enhanced security setting as the next place to check. Enhanced security disables just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation. This protection can change how a site’s scripts execute even though the ordinary JavaScript permission says they are allowed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open the Edge More (…) menu and select Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Find the Security section.
- Review the Enhanced security setting and its current mode.
Microsoft notes that Strict mode can cause parts of websites not to work as expected. A site may load a basic page while an interactive editor, sign-in flow, video control, or other component fails. That behavior does not prove JavaScript is disabled; it can indicate that Enhanced security is affecting script execution.
Use a site-specific exception when Enhanced security is the cause
Edge supports site-specific exceptions for Enhanced security. This lets you address a compatibility problem for the affected website instead of treating every website the same way. The exact controls shown can vary with the Edge version and the security mode selected.
- Stay in Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security.
- Review the controls for Enhanced security and the area for site exceptions.
- Add the affected website to the exception list using the site address requested by Edge.
- Return to the website and reload it.
Use an exception only for the site that needs it. If the site works after the exception, Enhanced security—not the JavaScript permission—was the relevant restriction. If the site still fails, remove the exception if it is no longer needed and ask the site’s administrator or support team whether the page is compatible with current Edge security protections.
Diagnose the three possible causes
The following matrix separates the checks that are often confused. Start with the JavaScript permission, then determine whether an administrator controls it, and finally examine Enhanced security.
Recommended Free Tools
| What you observe | JavaScript permission | Administrator control | Enhanced security | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The site says JavaScript is disabled and the switch is off. | Not allowed | Not established | Not yet relevant | Turn on Allowed (recommended), then reload. |
| The switch is unavailable or cannot be changed. | May be blocked | Likely controlled by policy | Not yet relevant | Contact the administrator for the managed Windows 11 device. |
| The switch is on, but parts of the site fail in Strict mode. | Allowed | Not established | Likely affecting execution | Review Enhanced security and use a site-specific exception if appropriate. |
| The switch is on and no organization controls it, but the page still fails. | Allowed | Not indicated | Needs checking | Review the Security section, then reload after any permitted change. |
This table is a decision aid, not a claim that every failure has one of these causes. A website can also have its own outage or coding problem. The Edge checks above establish whether the browser is blocking scripts before you escalate the issue to the website’s support team.

Why reloading matters
Changing a permission affects how Edge handles subsequent page activity. The page that was already open may have loaded without the scripts it needed, so it cannot necessarily recover just because the setting changed in the background. Returning to the affected tab and reloading makes Edge request the page again with the current JavaScript permission and any current security exception.
If the page opens in several tabs, reload the tab that showed the error. If the site opens a separate sign-in or application tab, reload that tab as well after confirming the setting.
Common mistakes when enabling JavaScript
Looking in the wrong settings category
JavaScript is not a Windows 11 system-wide switch for Edge. The control is in Edge’s site-permission area: Privacy, search, and services, then Site permissions, All permissions, and JavaScript. Searching unrelated Windows privacy pages will not change Edge’s browser permission.
Stopping at Site permissions
Site permissions is a category page. You must select All permissions and then choose JavaScript to reach the actual switch.
Assuming an enabled permission overrides every protection
Allowed (recommended) controls whether sites may use JavaScript. Enhanced security is a separate protection that disables JIT compilation and, in Strict mode, may make parts of a site fail. Check both controls when permission is already enabled.
Trying to change a managed setting repeatedly
If an organization policy controls the device, repeated attempts in Edge will not replace that policy. Ask the administrator instead, providing the site address and error message so the request can be evaluated.

Not reloading after the change
A permission change does not rewrite the content already rendered in a tab. Reload the affected page after enabling JavaScript or adding an approved security exception.

Microsoft recommends the normal JavaScript state as Allowed (recommended). That setting is the expected configuration for sites that require JavaScript. Enhanced security exists as an additional protection and can disable JIT compilation; Microsoft specifically warns that Strict mode can affect website functionality.
The practical choice depends on the situation:
- Personal Windows 11 device: Keep the recommended JavaScript permission enabled when you use sites that require it. If one trusted site is incompatible with Enhanced security, consider a site-specific exception rather than changing behavior for every site.
- Work or school device: Follow the organization’s policy. If the permission is locked, only the administrator can decide whether a change or exception is allowed.
- Site works only after an exception: The exception identifies Enhanced security as the compatibility factor. Keep the scope limited to that website and remove it if the site no longer needs it.
A complete troubleshooting checklist
Use this sequence when a page says JavaScript is disabled or an interactive feature will not load:
- Open Edge’s Settings from the More (…) menu.
- Navigate to Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > JavaScript.
- Verify that Allowed (recommended) is on.
- If the control is locked or unavailable, stop changing it and contact the administrator responsible for the Windows 11 device.
- If the permission is allowed, open the Security section under Privacy, search, and services.
- Check whether Enhanced security is enabled and whether the browser is using Strict mode.
- If the affected website is supported by a site-specific exception, add the exception through the controls Edge provides in that Security section.
- Return to the affected page and reload it.
- If the page still fails after these checks, give the website’s support team the exact symptom and tell them that JavaScript is allowed in Edge. That distinguishes a browser permission problem from a site compatibility or service problem.
Answers to the most common questions
Is JavaScript supported in Edge on Windows 11?
Yes. Microsoft Support states that JavaScript is supported in Microsoft Edge. The browser includes a permission control for allowing or blocking it.
What setting should I choose?
Choose Allowed (recommended) on the JavaScript permissions page. Reload the affected site after changing it.
Why can’t I turn the setting on?
An administrative policy may control JavaScript on a work, school, or otherwise managed Windows 11 device. Contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Why does a site still fail when JavaScript is allowed?
Enhanced security can affect script execution because it disables just-in-time JavaScript compilation. Microsoft says Strict mode can cause parts of websites not to work as expected. Check the Security section and, where appropriate, use a site-specific exception.
Do I need to restart Windows after enabling JavaScript?
No restart is part of Microsoft’s procedure. Return to the affected page and reload it after changing the permission.
