To enable automatic app updates on an iPhone 15, open Settings > Apps > App Store, then turn on App Updates. Apple says App Store apps update automatically by default, so this switch is the first thing to check if updates are not occurring.
The setting controls apps downloaded from the App Store. It is separate from iOS updates, which are managed at Settings > General > Software Update. The labels below match Apple’s current iPhone guidance; an older iOS version may arrange the screens differently.

What the App Updates switch does
Apple describes App Updates as: “Automatically download and install app updates.” Turning it on lets the App Store handle updates without requiring you to open each app’s listing or start every download yourself.
This control applies to apps obtained through the App Store. Apps that Apple includes with iPhone are updated as part of an iOS update, so they follow a different process from third-party apps downloaded from the App Store.

Enable automatic app updates step by step
- Open Settings. Find and tap the gray gear icon on your iPhone 15.
- Open the App Store settings. Tap Apps, then tap App Store.
- Enable the switch. Tap App Updates so the switch is on. This is the setting Apple identifies for automatically downloading and installing app updates.
After the switch is enabled, leave the App Store setting as it is. There is no separate “save” button; the change takes effect from the switch itself.
Confirm that automatic updates are enabled
Return to Settings > Apps > App Store and check that App Updates remains on. If it is on but apps still appear outdated, continue with the data-setting checks below rather than turning the switch off and on repeatedly.
Apple’s current guide covers iPhone generally and does not identify a special iPhone 15 version of this control. On an iPhone 15 running the current iOS interface, the path is the one shown above. If your screen uses different wording or places App Store outside the Apps list, you may be using an older iOS release; avoid assuming that every older version has identical navigation.
Automatic versus manual updating
Automatic updates reduce maintenance. Manual updates give you control over which apps change and when. Both methods remain available on iPhone.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).

| Method | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | The App Store downloads and installs available app updates when Apple’s App Updates control is enabled. | People who want routine maintenance without reviewing every app. |
| Manual, one app | Open the App Store account page, find the app in the updates list, and tap Update beside it. | People who want to choose individual updates. |
| Manual, all apps | Open the App Store account page and tap Update All. | People who want to start every available app update together. |
Update iPhone apps manually
Use manual updating when you want to select a particular app, start updates immediately, or review the available list yourself.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the account button or your profile photo.
- Tap App Updates.
- For one app, tap Update beside that app.
- To start every available app update, tap Update All.
The account-page method is separate from the automatic switch. You can leave automatic updates enabled and still use this screen when you want to choose an update yourself.
Check cellular-data settings
App Store behavior can depend on whether the iPhone is allowed to use cellular data. Apple lists Cellular Data among App Store settings and says it can allow App Store cellular access and adjust automatic-download behavior.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then App Store.
- Review the Cellular Data option and any automatic-download controls shown on your iPhone.
The exact cellular options can differ by device, carrier, and region. If a cellular control is missing or labeled differently, that does not necessarily indicate a fault; Apple does not promise identical options for every configuration.

Why Low Data Mode can pause automatic updates
Low Data Mode is a separate iPhone setting that limits data use. Apple says that when the iPhone is not connected to Wi‑Fi, Low Data Mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks.
If App Updates is on but updates are not being applied while you are using cellular data, check whether Low Data Mode is active for that connection. Connect to Wi‑Fi or adjust the relevant data setting if you want automatic activity to resume. The precise location of Low Data Mode depends on whether you are checking a cellular line or a Wi‑Fi network, so the controls may not look the same for every connection.
Do not confuse app updates with iOS updates
There are two different update workflows on iPhone:

| iOS | Settings > General > Software Update | The iPhone operating system. Apple’s built-in apps are updated when iOS is updated. |
Turning on App Updates does not turn on iOS updates, and checking Software Update does not replace the App Store control for downloaded apps. Use the screen that matches the software you want to update.

Troubleshoot an app that still looks out of date
The App Updates switch is off
Go to Settings > Apps > App Store and turn on App Updates. Because Apple says App Store apps update automatically by default, an off switch is the simplest explanation when the setting has been changed.
Low Data Mode is active away from Wi‑Fi
Apple identifies Low Data Mode as a reason automatic updates and background tasks can be paused when the iPhone is not on Wi‑Fi. Check the data mode for the connection you are using, or connect to Wi‑Fi before expecting automatic updating.
Cellular access is restricted
Review Settings > Apps > App Store and inspect Cellular Data. Apple’s available controls can vary by carrier, region, and device, so use the options shown on your iPhone rather than looking for a control that may not be provided in your configuration.

If the software is one of Apple’s built-in apps, check Settings > General > Software Update because Apple says those apps are updated when iOS is updated. If it was downloaded from the App Store, use the App Store update controls instead.

Your iPhone uses an older iOS layout
The current Apple instructions use Settings > Apps > App Store. Apple’s documentation is for iPhone generally and does not establish that every older iOS release uses the same menu structure. If your labels differ, look for the App Store settings and the control named App Updates, or consult Apple’s instructions for the iOS version installed on your phone.
When manual updating is the better choice
Automatic updating is the convenient default, but manual controls are useful when you want to decide which apps change. The App Store account page supports both a per-app Update button and an Update All command, so you can choose a single app or start the complete available list without changing the automatic-update setting.
Use the automatic switch when you want the App Store to manage routine app maintenance. Use the manual screen when reviewing updates individually is more important than hands-off operation. Neither choice changes the separate process used for iOS updates.
