To enable Adaptive Touch, connect a supported Surface keyboard, open the Surface app, choose the keyboard if it is not already selected, open Touchpad settings, switch Adaptive touch to On, and select Turn on. Adaptive Touch is a Surface touchpad accessibility feature; it is not a Windows 11 tablet-mode switch.
The control appears only when Microsoft detects compatible Surface hardware. If you cannot find it, check the supported-model list, keyboard connection, Surface app installation, and device updates before troubleshooting the touch hardware itself.

What Adaptive Touch does
Adaptive Touch changes how a compatible Surface touchpad interprets contact. Microsoft describes the behavior this way: “With adaptive touch mode enabled, the touchpad reacts to inputs from different parts of your body.” That means interaction is not limited to the usual fingertip input. Depending on the device and keyboard, you may be able to use a palm, foot, the edge of a hand, or a residual limb.

The mode is intended for people with different mobility or dexterity needs. It is an input-recognition option, not a performance mode and not a setting that turns a Surface into a tablet. The available controls vary by Surface device, so two supported models may not expose exactly the same adjustments.

Adjustments available in Adaptive Touch
- Right-click region: change the size of the area used to produce a right-click.
- Double-click interval: change how much time the touchpad allows between two clicks for them to count as a double-click.
- Alternative contact: use supported parts of the body, such as a palm, foot, hand edge, or residual limb, to operate the pad.
These adjustments are configured in the Surface app. The standard Windows touchpad page contains related gesture controls, but it does not replace the Surface app’s Adaptive Touch switch.
Surface models and keyboards that support it
Microsoft’s current support list includes the following hardware. Compatibility is specific to the Surface computer and keyboard combination, so having a touchscreen alone does not guarantee that Adaptive Touch will appear.
| Supported Surface hardware | Keyboard or touchpad consideration | Expected Adaptive Touch behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop 13-inch 1st Edition | Use its integrated keyboard and touchpad. | Adaptive touch can appear in the Surface app when the device is recognized. |
| Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard | Connect the keyboard to the Surface Pro before opening its settings. | The Touchpad settings page can expose Adaptive touch for the recognized keyboard. |
| Surface Pro Flex Keyboard | Attach or otherwise connect the Flex Keyboard so the Surface app can identify it. | Adaptive touch is available when the supported keyboard is detected. |
| Surface Laptop (8th Edition) | Use the built-in keyboard and touchpad. | The Adaptive touch control may be shown in the Surface app. |
| Surface Laptop (7th Edition) | Use the built-in keyboard and touchpad. | The Adaptive touch control may be shown in the Surface app. |
| Surface Laptop Studio 2 | Use the computer’s integrated touchpad. | The Surface app can provide the Adaptive touch setting when the hardware is supported and updated. |
Microsoft does not publish a comparative performance score for these models. The practical decision points are whether your exact Surface is listed, whether its keyboard or touchpad is recognized, whether the control appears in the app, and which body-input and timing adaptations you need.

How to turn on Adaptive Touch
- Connect the keyboard. If you are using a Surface Pro, attach the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard or Surface Pro Flex Keyboard and wait for Windows to recognize it. Integrated Surface Laptop keyboards do not require a separate attachment.
- Open the Surface app. Select Start, search for Surface, and launch the app. Install it from the Microsoft Store first if it is not present.
- Select the keyboard when necessary. If the app shows more than one Surface accessory or does not automatically focus on the current keyboard, select the Surface Keyboard displayed at the bottom of the app.
- Open touchpad controls. In the list on the right side of the app, select Touchpad settings.
- Enable Adaptive touch. Find Adaptive touch, move the switch to On, and then select Turn on to confirm.
- Test the new input method. Move the body part you intend to use across the touchpad and try a normal click, a right-click, and a double-click. If a gesture is not reliable, return to the same page and adjust the available region or timing controls.
The final confirmation matters: switching the control to On and selecting Turn on completes the activation. Closing the app without confirming can leave the feature disabled.
Configure the touchpad for your input
Set a workable right-click area
Open the Surface app again, select the recognized keyboard, and return to Touchpad settings. Use the right-click region control to make the target area larger or smaller. A larger region can help when precise fingertip placement is difficult, while a smaller one can reduce accidental context menus during pointer movement. The appropriate size depends on the body part and movement pattern you use.
Choose a double-click interval
The double-click interval determines how far apart two clicks may be while still being interpreted as one double-click. If your two contacts naturally arrive slowly, increase the interval. If accidental double-clicks occur during a single deliberate action, reduce it. Test the setting in a harmless location, such as selecting a file without opening it, before relying on it in other applications.

Adaptive Touch can recognize inputs from a palm, foot, hand edge, or residual limb, but Microsoft notes that available settings depend on the Surface device. Start with one contact method and change only one setting at a time. This makes it easier to identify whether a missed click is caused by contact placement, the right-click region, or the double-click interval.

Adaptive Touch is not Windows 11 tablet mode
These features solve different problems:
| Feature | Where it is controlled | What changes | How it is activated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Touch | Surface app > Touchpad settings | How a supported Surface touchpad recognizes varied body inputs, right-click placement, and double-click timing. | You manually switch Adaptive touch to On and select Turn on. |
| Windows 11 tablet mode behavior | Windows device-form-factor logic | Windows adapts its interface when the device changes between laptop and tablet forms. | It turns on or off automatically when a keyboard is detached or attached, or when the form factor changes; Windows 11 does not provide a manual tablet-mode switch. |
Detaching a keyboard will not enable Adaptive Touch, and enabling Adaptive Touch will not force Windows into tablet mode. If you are looking for a manual “tablet mode” toggle in Settings, you will not find one in Windows 11.
Related Windows 11 touch controls
Windows has separate settings for general touchscreen and touchpad behavior. They are useful alongside Adaptive Touch, but they do not expose the Surface-specific accessibility mode.
- Touchscreen gestures: open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch.
- Three- and four-finger touchpad gestures: open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Adaptive Touch: open the Surface app, choose the keyboard, and select Touchpad settings.
Changing a Windows gesture does not make an unsupported touchpad recognize a palm or foot. Conversely, Adaptive Touch does not replace Windows’ normal gesture configuration.
Why Adaptive touch is missing
The Surface model or keyboard is not supported
Check the exact product name against Microsoft’s supported list. A similarly named Surface generation may not qualify, and a compatible Surface Pro without the supported keyboard attached may not display the option. This is the most important check because the control is hardware-specific.

The keyboard is not connected or selected
Reconnect the Surface Pro Keyboard, then reopen the Surface app. Look at the bottom of the app and select the Surface Keyboard if it is listed there. If the app is focused on another accessory, its right-hand list may not contain the touchpad page for the keyboard you intend to configure.
The Surface app is not installed or is outdated
Search for Surface from Start. If no app appears, install it from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft also recommends checking for Surface and Windows updates in the Surface app. Restart the computer after updates if Windows requests it, reconnect the keyboard, and check Touchpad settings again.
The app sees the device but the control still does not appear
Confirm that the recognized accessory is the keyboard with the touchpad, not another connected Surface device. Then verify the model name, apply available updates, and restart the app. If the model is not on Microsoft’s list, there is no supported software switch that can add Adaptive touch to it.
When touch or the touchpad does not respond
Check whether Windows has disabled a touchscreen
If the problem concerns the display touchscreen rather than the touchpad, open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, find HID-compliant touch screen, and choose Enable device when that option is available. This restores a disabled touchscreen device; it does not add Adaptive Touch to an unsupported touchpad.

Separate software configuration from hardware failure
After confirming the keyboard, app, model, and updates, test touch in UEFI as Microsoft recommends. If touch also fails in UEFI, Windows settings are unlikely to be the cause and servicing may be required. If touch works in UEFI but fails only in Windows, continue with the app, update, and device-driver checks rather than assuming the hardware is defective.
Use a controlled test after each change
- Open a simple window where a click has an obvious result.
- Test a single click with your chosen contact method.
- Test the right-click region without moving across the pad.
- Test two clicks at the current interval.
- Change one setting, then repeat the same three tests.
This approach prevents a larger right-click region and a longer double-click interval from masking which adjustment actually helped.
Choosing hardware for Adaptive Touch
If you are selecting among supported devices, compare the features that affect your use rather than looking for a benchmark score. Microsoft provides no named comparative statistic for Adaptive Touch performance in its support material.

| Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the exact Surface model on Microsoft’s current support list? | An unlisted model may never show the Adaptive touch control. |
| Does the keyboard or integrated touchpad match the supported hardware? | Surface Pro compatibility depends on the connected keyboard as well as the tablet. |
| Will the Surface app identify the keyboard? | The app’s keyboard selection determines which Touchpad settings are available. |
| Which body inputs do you need? | Adaptive Touch is designed for varied contact, including a palm, foot, hand edge, or residual limb. |
| Do you need a larger right-click area or a slower double-click interval? | These are the principal adjustments Microsoft documents, and their availability can vary by device. |
Keeping the setting available
- Leave the keyboard connected while configuring it so the Surface app can identify the correct touchpad.
- Install Surface and Windows updates offered through the Surface app.
- After a major hardware change, reopen the app and confirm that the same keyboard is selected.
- Record the right-click region and double-click interval that work for you so they can be restored after a reset or replacement.
- Use the Windows Touch and Touchpad pages for ordinary gestures, but return to the Surface app for Adaptive Touch changes.
Quick checklist
- Confirm that your Surface model and keyboard are among the supported devices.
- Connect the keyboard, if it is detachable.
- Install or open the Surface app.
- Select the Surface Keyboard at the bottom when necessary.
- Choose Touchpad settings on the right.
- Set Adaptive touch to On.
- Select Turn on.
- Adjust the right-click region and double-click interval for your preferred contact method.
- If the option is absent, check compatibility, app and Windows updates, and touch hardware before changing unrelated Windows gesture settings.
