They do not confirm a button-only method for shutting down a phone whose screen cannot be used. If the phone is frozen, the same button combination held for longer is a force-restart procedure, and the phone may turn back on.
Normal shutdown: the menu still needs the screen
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together for a few seconds to open the Power menu, as described in Samsung Support’s instructions for powering a Galaxy device on or off.
- Tap Power off, then tap Power off again to confirm.
The button combination opens the menu; it is not, by itself, a confirmed screenless shutdown. If the display is black or unresponsive, Samsung’s documented steps do not explain how to select the menu item blindly.

If the phone is frozen
Press and hold the Side (Power) button and Volume Down until the phone shuts down. Samsung says this forced action simulates a battery pull and may take up to 60 seconds. Its troubleshooting guidance also describes it as a reboot, so it may restart the phone rather than remain off. See Samsung Support’s steps for a Galaxy phone that will not turn off.

- Quick Settings: Samsung documents a power icon in Quick Settings, but using it requires interacting with the display.
- Bixby Voice: Samsung lists voice control as another option for supported Galaxy devices, but it depends on Bixby Voice having been set up already. Samsung does not establish it as a guaranteed screenless shutdown method.

If the phone still will not turn off
If the phone remains unresponsive after the forced button hold, Samsung recommends requesting service. When the display cannot be used, the official guidance reviewed does not establish a dependable blind sequence for confirming Power off on an S20 FE.
