Usually, yes. Switching your phone from 5G to LTE (4G) changes which network your phone prefers. It doesn’t cancel your service. Calls and texts keep working if your phone, SIM and carrier support Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Wi-Fi Calling can act as a backup. A setting can’t fix an unsupported phone or SIM, a feature your carrier hasn’t provisioned, or a spot with no signal.
Why calls and texts survive when you turn off 5G
Apple documents the switch as a network-preference change. On supported iPhone 12 and later models with a 5G plan, you choose LTE under Voice & Data, and Apple says this turns off 5G. The options you see depend on your model, carrier and region (Apple Support, iOS 26 guide).

Once you’re on LTE, voice and text rely on VoLTE. Google describes it this way: “With Voice over LTE (VoLTE), you can make phone calls, send text messages and reach emergency services over the 4G network instead of older network technologies.” Google also notes that operator settings affect whether VoLTE is available or on by default (Google Pixel Help).

5G data and 5G voice are separate things. O2 UK calls voice over 5G “5G Calling” (also called VoNR) and treats it as distinct from 4G Calling (VoLTE). O2 says 5G Calling gives clearer voice and faster call connection than 4G Calling. Its page was last updated 05/06/2026. If you set your phone to LTE, a call can use 4G Calling instead, depending on your network and device support.
How to turn off 5G
iPhone (iPhone 12 or later, with a 5G plan)
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Voice & Data.
- Choose LTE.
Apple says menu items vary by iPhone model, carrier and region. This path doesn’t apply to older iPhones or to Android.

Pixel and other Android phones
Google places the VoLTE control on Pixel phones under Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs. Operator settings may hide it or leave it on by default. Other Android makers use different labels, so look for the preferred network type and VoLTE or 4G Calling options in your SIM or mobile network settings.
What can still go wrong
- Unsupported phone or SIM. Videotron (Canada) warns that an incompatible device or SIM may fail to access partner networks. It says calls and texts use LTE through VoLTE once 3G is phased out. That guidance is specific to Videotron and its networks, so don’t assume it applies to every carrier or country.
- Mobile data off. Videotron states that VoLTE calls still work when mobile data is disabled in device settings. This is also a Videotron statement, so check your own carrier.
- VoLTE not provisioned or switched off. Without it, an LTE-only phone may not complete calls on some networks. Confirm with your carrier.
- No coverage. LTE may be weaker than 5G in some places, and coverage varies by location. Test where you actually use your phone.
Wi-Fi Calling as a safety net
O2 says Wi-Fi Calling can support calls and texts when a mobile network isn’t available, though text support is limited to selected devices. Verizon describes calls and texts over Wi-Fi, with activation and compatibility requirements. Where your carrier offers it, turning it on gives you a second route if cellular signal is poor. Set it up first, because it usually needs enabling in your phone settings and sometimes on your account.

If calls or texts stop after switching to LTE
- Confirm with your carrier that your phone model and SIM are supported for VoLTE or 4G Calling.
- Check that VoLTE is on in your SIM or cellular settings, if your phone shows the option.
- Turn on Wi-Fi Calling if it’s supported, and try again on Wi-Fi.
- Test in another location to rule out a coverage gap.
- If nothing works, switch back to the 5G option and contact your carrier.
You don’t need to buy anything for this. The fix is a setting or a carrier check, not new hardware.
