To build an offline recipe app for Mom, treat each recipe as a small family archive: record the story, transcribe it, turn the transcript into an editable recipe draft, and save both the useful details and their source on the device. The key technical choice is transcription. Apple documents an on-device SpeechAnalyzer path, but its separate SFSpeechRecognizer authorization guidance describes audio being sent to Apple servers—so “Apple speech recognition” alone is not a privacy guarantee.
Design the app around the memory, not just the recipe
A spoken recipe often includes more than ingredients and steps: who taught it, what to look for, or how a dish should feel when it is ready. Keep the recording or transcript alongside the structured recipe so the family can revisit the original account when a measurement or phrase is unclear.

Build the workflow as distinct stages: record audio, transcribe it, review the transcript, create a recipe draft, and save it. A transcript is not a recipe, and an automatically structured recipe should not be treated as verified cooking instructions.
Record with a clear, forgiving interaction
Apple documents AVAudioRecorder for recording audio from the system’s active input device. On iOS and tvOS, configure AVAudioSession with the record or playAndRecord category. The recorder supports user-controlled duration and pause or resume, which suits a conversation that may stop and start.

- Use an obvious record and stop control, and show when recording is active.
- Explain the microphone’s purpose immediately before the first recording.
- If microphone access is denied, explain how to enable it in Settings and let the person continue without recording if possible.
- Offer playback or deletion so the speaker can check what was captured.
Do not promise a particular maximum memo length based on the recorder documentation alone.
Choose transcription based on the offline promise
Apple’s Speech framework supports live and prerecorded audio and includes SpeechAnalyzer and modules such as SpeechTranscriber. Apple’s permission documentation says SpeechAnalyzer transcriber modules do not send voice audio to Apple servers. By contrast, the SFSpeechRecognizer authorization guidance describes a flow that sends audio to Apple servers and requires user authorization.

These are materially different paths. Pick the API that fits the privacy behavior you intend to offer, and describe that behavior accurately. Do not label an implementation offline merely because it uses an Apple speech API.

The cited Apple documentation does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for these choices. Check the app’s deployment target, the specific device, supported language and asset availability, and performance on the target hardware before making broad claims. Apple’s Speech overview notes that “The SpeechTranscriber class and other module classes provide specific services.”

Keep the transcript visible before making recipe fields
Show the transcription for review before presenting a recipe as ready to cook. Let the user correct ingredient names, quantities, units, temperatures, durations, and the order of steps. These details can change the result of a dish, and the framework documentation does not guarantee that recipe terms or numbers will be transcribed correctly.
When practical, retain a link to the source audio with the draft. It gives the family a way to check whether an uncertain amount was “one” or “two,” or whether a spoken phrase described a step or a doneness cue. The transcript and the structured recipe serve different purposes: one records what was said; the other makes it easier to shop and cook.

Save locally first; make cloud sync a separate choice
SwiftData provides Apple’s Swift-native building blocks for model persistence, including @Model, relationships, ModelContainer, and ModelContext. Apple says SwiftData can preserve model data across app launches and query it for display. That makes local persistence a practical baseline: a saved recipe should remain available on the device without cloud sync being required for the offline experience.
A useful recipe model can include:
- Recipe title and structured directions.
- Ingredients with the original text, plus parsed amount and unit when reliable.
- Person or source, and the date recorded.
- Raw transcript and an optional reference to the audio file.
Apple also documents optional SwiftData syncing through CloudKit when configured with the necessary capabilities. Local storage and cloud sync are separate decisions: sync may help family members share records across devices, but it is not required to make a locally saved recipe usable offline. Core Data is another Apple-documented persistence option for projects with different requirements.

Make privacy behavior understandable to the family
For the selected transcription path, state whether voice audio stays on the device or is sent to Apple’s servers. Ask for access in context, visibly indicate recording, and provide a way to review and delete saved audio or recipes. If using the relevant SFSpeechRecognizer APIs, include the NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription Info.plist purpose string and request authorization before use; Apple warns that omitting the key can cause a crash when those APIs are used.
Local-first storage is an architectural choice, not proof that every part of an app keeps data local. If the app adds cloud sync, analytics, backups, or another service, evaluate and explain those data flows separately. Also make clear that recording another person raises privacy and consent considerations; saving a family member’s voice does not automatically mean it is appropriate to share it.
Build the smallest trustworthy version first
- Record: use AVAudioRecorder with the appropriate audio-session category, clear recording controls, and a recovery path for denied microphone access.
- Transcribe: choose SpeechAnalyzer or the SFSpeechRecognizer flow according to the intended network behavior; validate deployment and language support on the target devices.
- Review: show the transcript and let the user correct uncertain words and cooking-critical details.
- Structure: turn the reviewed content into editable recipe fields instead of silently treating automatic extraction as final.
- Persist: save the recipe and transcript locally with SwiftData or another suitable persistence layer; add CloudKit only if cross-device sync is a deliberate feature.
Apple’s guidance on preserving model data across launches is a useful reference when implementing durable storage. The family-facing goal is simple: a recipe remains readable after the app closes, and its original words remain available when the polished version needs checking.
